The Surveillance Society

The Feral Irishman brings us 2 videos on the surveillance state. The first is from Snowden, who rang the warning bell all those years ago. "Is This Your Will?" 10 Minute Video .... Which Led To A Video About Surveillence Capitalism.... Must watch.

From Snowden...

Our rights are not gifts. They are prizes that are won.

You must stand for something.

The first video is about 10 minutes.

The 2nd video is about Shoshana Zuboff, a Harvard Professor who wrote a book on surveillance capitalism. I don't agree with all of her conclusions, but the facts are somewhat disturbing. That 2nd video is 50 minutes, but worth it if you have the time.

The section on "Pokemon Go" is worth it, all by itself.

Self-defense in New York City

Crime is out of control. The police are on the defensive. People will do what is possible. Self-defense Tasers and stun guns surge in popularity

Manhattan developer Daniel Neiditch has equipped 15 of his employees with New York City’s latest must-have accessory: stun guns and Tasers.

“Crime is out of control in the city and everyone’s scared,” Neiditch told the Post. “It’s gotten so bad since the pandemic. I’ve watched apartments and stores being broken into and people afraid to ride the subway. I wanted to be proactive and ensure the safety of my employees.”

There is much info in the agressive nature of the homeless, etc. Click thru for that info.

Here are the stats.

Shootings and murders skyrocketed by 97 percent and 44 percent respectively in 2020 citywide, according to NYPD data. Subways have become violent places, where the so-called “A-Train Ripper” knifed two homeless people to death, and slashed two others, in a one-day spree two weeks ago.

Sounds like it is time to "Defund the Police." Or something. Hey, it isn't MY idea, it is the position of The Left.

7 Victims of Affordable Bail... in Chicago, in 2021

CWB Chicago is keeping track. #7: Teen accused of shooting driver during Wednesday carjacking is awaiting trial for 3 felonies, prosecutors say

A 17-year-old charged with shooting a man during a carjacking attempt in Logan Square on Wednesday is the seventh person accused of killing or shooting someone in Chicago this year while awaiting trial on other serious felonies.

Because keeping violent offenders in jail is unfair.

Do Something! Even If You Know It Won't Work

And is probably unconstitutional. Sometimes you have to try something

Because actually throwing bad-guys in jail is such a 19th Century idea.

So there is an Illinois representative that wants to outlaw the video game Grand Theft Auto to fight carjacking in Chicago. The science says that won't have an impact (Follow the Science!) but "broken windows" is unfair. And mean.

And this "journalist" seems fine with the idea of dumping the Constitution to try random things in the hope that one of them will be as good as "holding people accountable."

Keeping kids away from Grand Theft Auto is more doable, and certainly a sign that society doesn’t think this kind of thing is fun. Maybe it’s a broken windows situation: fix the small stuff and the big stuff follows.

But of course they are not talking about "keeping kids away" but "banning completely." And it also isn't "broken windows." That would be punishing people for infractions, however small. But that would be mean. And it would sound like "tough on crime" which The Left HATES!

According to this "journalist" carjacking is about "jobs and systemic racism" and has nothing to do with morals, or teaching kids the difference between right and wrong. There is no right and wrong. There is no good or evil, not according The Left.

They Suffered a Breakdown of the Victim-selection Process

They thought breaking into an occupied home was a good idea. They were wrong. Arrest made in connection to fatal Plover shooting

Two would-be bad-guys decide to break into a Wisconsin home. One is shot and killed. The other is shot and taken to hospital. Now that he is out of the hospital, he has been charged.

Benjamin Smith is facing 10 felony charges in relation to a home invasion in Plover earlier this month. According to a press release from Plover Police Chief Dan Ault, Smith was arrested on February 25th following his release from the hospital where he was recovering from a gunshot wound.

The Left will be screaming about how unfair the charges are. Or maybe not, since no one's narrative is advanced.

No charges will be brought against the homeowner because self-defense is a human-right.

Tucker Carlson makes a lot of money, so he can afford to live almost anywhere, but lately he’s been living rent-free inside the heads of liberal journalists like Megan Garber of The Atlantic.

Carlson's latest crime?

What triggered Garber was Carlson’s Tuesday monologue in which he mocked CNN’s Brian Stelter for claiming that the QAnon conspiracy theory is being spread by the “right wing” and “radicalizing Americans.” And let’s just make clear that there is no amount of mockery greater than Brian Stelter deserves.

Because Keeping Violent Criminals in Jail Is Unfair

CWB Chicago is keeping a running total of the number of people who kill, while out on "affordable bail." #6: Man, on bail for attempted murder and robbery, charged with killing woman while speeding away from police traffic stop | CWB Chicago

How unfair is it to the people who've died?

A Chicago man who struck and killed a pedestrian while speeding away from a police traffic stop this week was on bail for attempted murder and robbery at the time of the crash, prosecutors said Thursday.

Isaac Wade, 20, is the sixth person accused of killing or shooting someone in Chicago this year while on bail for other serious felonies.

Running from a traffic stop is not unexpected behavior for criminals. Look at YouTube for "police chase," and there are a lot to view.

Not for lack of trying on the part of prosecutors. Henry, after testifying, is found not guilty in murder trial

During his testimony, Henry said he feared for his life after his fingers were caught in the door of the Tahoe and Martinez began to drive away, dragging him alongside the car

But that wasn't enough for the prosecutor. It was his fault. He should have done something else. Whatever.

The jury deliberated for just a few hours before reaching a unanimous verdict.

Keeping Violent Offenders In Jail is Unfair

Or something. Why Wasn’t He Already in Jail?

So, he was out on bond for an attempted first-degree murder in 2019, now he’s charged with attempted second-degree murder — and it’s on video this time, so perhaps they’ll keep him in jail more than overnight, eh? We keep finding cases like this, where people get shot by someone who arguably should never have been out on the streets, and it’s hard to reconcile this reality with liberal rhetoric about “mass incarceration.”

And there is a "Crazy people are dangerous" story as well.

The End of Daft Punk

Daft Punk came along during a time when I wasn't listening, much, to House Music. My clubbing days were coming to an end, and while I listened to some stuff that I owned, such as Yello, I wasn't looking for new House Music. Not that I haven't heard of them. Their stage personas are legendary. But for whatever reason, I just never followed them or their music.

They would still show up from time to time, with a hit single, or with the Tron: Legacy soundtrack album.

They called it quits after 28 years. Daft Punk Break Up.

Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo formed Daft Punk in Paris in 1993, helping to define the French touch style of house music. Their debut album, 1997’s Homework, was a dance music landmark, featuring classic singles “Around the World” and “Da Funk.” By the release of its follow-up, Discovery, in 2001, the duo had taken to making public appearances in the robot outfits that became their trademark.

This song is "Da Funk" by Daft Punk. It was a single in 1995, and included on their 1997 debut album Homework.

For anyone interested , there is a short, 8-minute film, “Epilogue,” excerpted from their 2006 film Electroma via which then announced the breakup.

He Suffered a Failure of the Victim-selection Process

My guess is that he thought he was tough. Man killed in ‘self defense’ shooting.

There was a "confrontation" at a home. He went to his truck outside, retrieved a firearm, and started firing into the home.

One of the individuals from inside of the home returned fire, striking White. After being shot, White got back into his vehicle and attempted to drive away but after traveling a short distance succumbed to his injuries.

He could have gone to his truck, and driven away. That wouldn't have been tough. Or something.

Self-defense is a human-right.

A 19-year-old Career Criminal

If he had died in this chase, his family would have demanded answers, and there would have been calls for Justice. As it is, we can only hope he gets a bit of Justice.

Police chases can be interesting, but when they happen close enough to home that you can recognize all of the landmarks, they are awesome.

This one starts not too far from where I used to live, 20 years ago or so, and continues past landmarks I see once a month or so. I'm not sure that it is interesting in its own right, aside from that making it interesting to me..

So back at the end of January, there was a high speed chase, through suburban Cincinnati. Police: Teens' crime spree ended in high-speed chase down I-71

Starting in Montgomery, swinging through Kenwood, and eventually ending on the Freeway in Warren County, in South Lebanon, Ohio. But the driver started much earlier than that.

Driver Jeremiah Jackson, 19, was arrested on the scene and faces six charges in Hamilton County alone: Three counts of receiving stolen property, one count of misusing a stolen credit card, one count of failing to comply with police orders, and a final count of criminal damaging.

By the time of his arrest, he was already wanted in Franklin County, where he was accused of stealing a car, and in Logan County, where authorities said he stole another car and struck a police cruiser during a chase.

The Mercedes-Benz in the video below was stolen. Are you shocked?

Here is the video of the entire chase: Amazing High Speed 100MPH Police Chase Cop Dash Cam Video in Cincinnati Ohio near Kings Island. It is also embedded below. 12 minutes of chase, and about that much of aftermath. At about 9 minutes and 45 seconds in, you can catch a glimpse of the roller-coasters at King's Island amusement park, off to the right, which is mentioned in the title to the video.

If you don't have the stomach for a 12 minute car chase, here is the 2 minute "highlights reel" from a local news station. It has all the particulars.

Good To Know Mayor Groot Has Her Priorities Straight

Because no doubt that all of Chicago's problems stem from statues in parks - that are currently covered in snow. Column: Crime, taxes, closed schools or clogged side streets. But Lightfoot focuses on statues. - Chicago Tribune

And Groot is a not-so-affectionate nickname for mayor Lori Lightfoot. Who I still don't think looks like Beetlejuice.

Chicago homicides and carjacking numbers skyrocket, taxpayers continue to flee, many of the city’s side streets and alleys are impassable because of snow, and the city’s public schools aren’t fully open.

Yet what occupies Mayor Lori Lightfoot? Chicago’s cultural revolution and the eradication of “problematic statues” of “potentially” offensive statuary in the city’s parks.

The "problematic" statues include Lincoln and Washington, of course.

But what did Leif Ericson ever do to Chicago?

I don't remember if there is a statue of Casimir Pulaski in Chicago or not. (There should be.) But if there was, I'm sure the offended would want it removed. (Note: He didn't own slaves, came over here from Poland to fight in our Revolution, and is credited with founding the US Calvary.)

How many voters can Groot distract?

He Thought Breaking into the Truck Was a Good Idea

He was wrong. Man shot while trying to break big rig’s windows, dies

The trucker was inside the cab of the big rig, when this guy thought he would try to break in.

While hanging from a side mirror, the sheriff said, Raney repeatedly kicked the window on the driver’s side door then on the passenger side.

The truck driver, with permission from Pot Luck and Liquor, was asleep in his cab at the time. The trucker told investigators that he was fearing for his life and shot Raney multiple times, [Sheriff John] Ballance said.

Cops are treating it like self-defense, which is a human-right.

He's Not “a bad kid.” He just shot at cops is all

We are supposed to ignore the fact that he just shot at 3 police officers. He missed. NYPD cops shoot graffiti vandal after he opens fire on them - New York Daily News

“My son’s not a bad kid,” he said. “He’s finding his way, you know? Me and him got into it. I feel a little guilty because I told him to leave . . . And he didn’t come back. And I thought he got a hotel room, because he left with his girlfriend.”

What were you doing when you were a teenager? I'm guessing it didn't include shooting at cops.

And of course the father doesn't believe what the police are saying about his perfect son. I mean just because he kicked his son out of the home doesn't mean he isn't Father-of-the-Year Material. And it doesn't mean that the son isn't a choirboy. Or something.

“He’s a teenager going through teenage things.”

Really? That's what you call it?

The kid who got shot is in the hospital and will face charges when he is released. I'm sure there will be "calls for Justice" and demands for answers. Here's an answer. If you don't want to get shot a good first step is to refrain from shooting at police.

Abyss of Time - Countdown to Singularity

Epica, one of my favorite Symphonic Metal bands, has a new album coming out on February 26th. And so today we have a single from that album that was released back in October. And it's why we have a Metal for Monday song on Wednesday. (See the definition of Rules versus Guidelines.) I'm sure we will cover more of that album in the future.

The music video is a bit distracting. Most of them are. And I realize that this is the wrong time of the day for Metal, even Symphonic Metal, but here we are.

This is "Abyss of Time - Countdown to Singularity" by Epica from the upcoming album Omega. And I really hope that the name of this album does not mean it is their last album.

The record label, Nuclear Blast, seems confused about the title to the song. Hence the title of the video. Record labels are like that. Look what they did to Rush and "Spirit of Radio."

The Biden Administration Was Happy to See Dead Texans

They made sure there wouldn't be enough energy. Joe Biden’s Dept. of Energy Blocked Texas from Increasing Power Ahead of Enduring Storm

A week before, Texas begged for help and asked for DOE to lift federal regulations barring state’s energy output.

An Emergency Order from the Biden administration’s Department of Energy shows Texas energy grid operator ERCOT was instructed to stay within green energy standards by purchasing energy from outside the state at a higher cost, throttling power output throughout the state ahead of a catastrophic polar vortex.

So how did that work out?

Hat tip to A View from the Beach: Did Biden Let Texas Freeze in the Dark over Global Warming?

Would They Publish a Misleading Headline?

Of course they would. Man shot in Pike Co. while cutting off catalytic converter - Scioto Valley Guardian

He was not "cutting off anything." He had just hit the homeowner in the face with the saw.

The Sheriff said Thompson struck the homeowner in the face with the saw, and that’s when the homeowner shot Thompson in the groin. Thompson reportedly crawled away into a nearby pickup truck and fled the area, the Sheriff reported.

But it is hard to paint the law-abiding gun owner as a monster if you admit that he was only defending himself from a violent assault, and not acting as a blood-crazed vigilante.

The guy who got shot is wanted on felony charges.

Media Bias? What Media Bias? Oh, and they have a published email address, but it is apparently bouncing emails as "no such mailbox." So they don't want to hear about what a crappy job they are doing.

Carjacking - The Other Epidemic

The Other McCain starts us off with, Philadelphia: Carjack City, U.S.A.

Carjackings increased 80% last year in Philadelphia, when there were 404 carjackings, and January’s numbers show an even further rise

Chicago might have something to say about Philadelphia being "Carjack City, USA." Chicago police arrest 210 suspected carjackers in first 50 days of 2021.

Carjackings rose about 135% last year to 1,415 and continue at a high pace this year, police statistics show. CPD recorded 218 carjackings in January 2021 – a staggering spike from the 77 reported during the same time last year, authorities previously told Fox News.

That is a lot of carjacking, though they have apparently also arrested a lot of people, but my guess (fear?) is that what passes for the Criminal Justice System in Chicago and Cook County will turn most of them free with no-cash bond. Of course Illinois is in the process of eliminating cash bail, so there is that.

It is tough to find stories that capture "year-over-year" or month to month comparisons. That might be because we are in the middle of February.

What it isn't hard to find are stories of carjackings. Here are just a few.

I could go on at length.

When you make something cheap, you get more of it. In Chicago - which is really the only city I track closely, and that for sentimental reasons - has decided that it won't punish most criminals. The cops arrest them, and the State's Attorney's office (run by Crimesha, also known as Kim Foxx), together with the judges, turn them loose. And guess what... They offend again.

Things are going to get a lot worse before anyone dares to utter the words, "Tough on Crime" during an election.

A High Tech Civilization Was Nice While It Lasted

The reliance on Green Energy is going to make that impossible to maintain. Texas Was "Seconds And Minutes" From Complete Disaster | ZeroHedge

The power catastrophe that is currently going on in Texas could have been much worse.

[Bill Magness, president of Electric Reliability Council of Texas or ERCOT] said on Wednesday that if operators had not acted in that moment, the state could have suffered blackouts that “could have occurred for months,” and left Texas in an “indeterminately long” crisis.

So of course instead of taking the blame for building a house of cards, the bureaucrats are patting themselves on the back saying, it could have been much worse.

And while that may justify the widespread blackouts, it does not explain why the Texas grid was so underprepared for just this scenario. ERCOT officials have repeatedly said that the winter storm that swept the state caught power generators off guard. The storm far exceeded what ERCOT projected in the fall to prepare for winter. Right, but that's why they are paid the big bucks: to predict worst case scenarios (kinda like the Fed) - it is here that everyone failed so abysmally. Which means that it has to be spun into some heroic task.

Hat tip to Lawrence Person, who notes...

Could be worse: ERCOT says that their quick thinking to impose rotating blackouts prevented the physical destruction of the Texas Interconnect Grid. That may even be true, but it’s sort of like a teenager saying “Thanks to my quick thinking, I only managed to burn down the garage and not the entire house!”

Electric UN-reliability Council is more like it.

What Would Justice Look Like? Here's One Answer

She was running at a deputy with a long knife in her hands. That wasn't enough for "the community." Or something. California Deputy Shoots and Kills Crazy Woman Charging at Another Officer With a Knife | CauseACTION Clarion.

Crawford can then be heard screaming inaudibly as she begins to move toward the officers with a knife in her hand. At one point one of Crawford’s children steps in front of her and throws their hands up apparently screaming “stop!”

There is a 12 minute video at that link above, which is basically what the cops released.

I much prefer the video in this link. It is 27 minutes. It captures the interaction with cops, as shown in the dashcam footage, and also the offended "community members" who are "Demanding Justice," and want to know how a small woman can threaten police deputies. Well, I think the video makes that clear.

"The Community" would only be happy if the cop got stabbed. While the death is certainly a tragedy to her family, I do not believe it was not an injustice.

Or at least a bite out of a criminal. CHOMP! Uber driver bit chunk out of would-be carjacker's eyebrow, prosecutor says | CWB Chicago

But, she said, Brown only managed to get the car into neutral, so he had to resort to fighting with the driver, who chomped down on his left eyebrow as they struggled for control of the vehicle.

A private security guard who was working nearby came to the Uber driver’s aid. The guard scuffled with Brown and placed him into custody until police arrived, D’Antignac said.

As for the ultimate outcome, the State's Attorney's office has charged some appropriate charges, but they have a habbit of dropping things because of some type of "adjective" justice, which is very different from regular, old-fashioned Justice.

Prosecutors charged the brow-bitten carjacker, Allen Brown, with vehicular hijacking and misdemeanor battery. He also has a juvenile armed robbery case pending, Assistant State’s Attorney Franka D’Antignac said during his bond court appearance Friday.

Uber drivers (and Lyft) are disarmed by corporate policy. As a result they are often the victims of carjacking.

When a Leftist Modifies the Word Justice, Be Ready for Bad Outcomes

In this case it is "Restorative Justice." Broward County School Board Member Admits She Was ‘Intimidated’ Into Covering Up Safety Failures That Contributed To Marjory Stoneman Douglas Massacre

Because nothing says Justice LESS, than treating people differently before the law.

School board member Nora Rupert admitted in a deposition that internal corruption led to safety failures that contributed to the death of students and teachers. When she tried to speak up about these failures, she claimed that she was met with an intimidation campaign from other board members and the district’s superintendent, Robert Runcie.

Runcie is a graduate of both Harvard University and Northwestern University’s business school. He started his career in education in 2003 when his college buddy Arne Duncan — who President Barack Obama would eventually tap to run the Department of Education in 2009 — hired him to run the Chicago Public School district’s IT office.

The program, instigated by the Obama administration wanted to disrupt the "school to prison" pipeline, so called.

During his research process, Preston also came across a discipline matrix problem in Florida schools that became mandated at the behest of the Obama administration’s “restorative justice” policies. This policy was championed by Runcie, so Preston spoke with school board chairwoman Nora Rupert — Runcie’s most vocal critic.

Rupert confirmed to Preston that under the current discipline matrix, school administrators were not required to refer students to law enforcement for felonies.

So that meant that other students would be submitted to felonies, and the perpetrators would not be held accountable. And of course the gunman at Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school avoided problems because of that.

Hat tip to The Daley Gator, who notes...

Yes, it is, past time actually. The sick bastard who pulled the trigger killed many innocent lives, but leftism, in this case, “restorative justice” was just as culpable. And never forget those who embrace leftist failures also seek to use the tragedies caused by leftism to strip away natural rights like self-defense. Again let us say, leftism is evil

Chicago PD Brass Is Lying About Crime

I would pretend to be shocked, but I can't even pretend that a Chicago politician would lie. Snow job: CPD top cop boasts carjackings "down" 20% in February (doesn't mention blizzards) | CWB Chicago

And make no mistake... Chicago Police Supt. David Brown is a politician.

It’s so ridiculous, we almost couldn’t believe our eyes Tuesday. But there it was.

Chicago Police Supt. David Brown went on Twitter to brag that carjackings were down 20% during the first two weeks of February compared to the last two weeks of January.

Of course if you compare this year to last year, the numbers tell a different story. If you look at February 2020 versus 2021, there was about twice the number of carjackins than last year. Hard to spin that though.

And why the decline versus January? Can you spell "Polar Vortex?"

Meanwhile, the National Weather Service’ Chicago office sent a few tweets Tuesday, too.

“So how about these past three weeks Windy City??” the weather service tweeted. “Three winter storms, lake effect snow, blowing snow, heavy wet snow, light fluffy snow…you name a snow and the city has seen it. It’s the snowiest 3-week stretch for the city since the historic 1978-1979 winter.”

I blame Global Warming for that, by the way.

Anyway there is more at the CWB Chicago story linked above.

SNL Displays Its Antisemitism

Not only are they not funny, they are bigoted. SNL host falsely claims Israel only vaccinating Jewish citizens | The Post Millennial

"Israel is reporting that they vaccinated half their population, and I'm gonna guess it's the Jewish half," Che said.

Che's "guess," however, is false. In fact, more than two thirds of Israel's Arab citizens over the age of 60 have already been vaccinated against coronavirus.

Then the Left attacked Israel for not vaccinating people in territory controlled by the Palestinian Authority.

The Palestinian Authority has rejected offers from the Israeli government to vaccinate their citizens as healthcare falls under the PA's authority. Nevertheless, the Israeli government has begun transferring doses of the vaccine to the PA.

But hey, why clutter the issue with facts? The folks on the Left and the idiots at Saturday Night Live can just revel in their ignorant bigotry.

21 February 2021

The Italians Have Won the PRADA Cup and Will Compete In the 2021 America's Cup Match

The PRADA Cup is a series of races that determines who will be the Challenger in the America's Cup Match. That Match will be held in MARCH 6-15, 2021 in Aukland, New Zealand.

Final Racing was February 21, 2020 in Aukland. LUNA ROSSA PRADA PIRELLI WIN THE PRADA CUP

The Italians winning the Series 7-1 over INEOS TEAM UK, now move onto the America’s Cup Match, the ultimate goal four years in the making, starting in 12 days time.

Wining seven to one, the Italians looked very strong. They will now face Emirates Team New Zealand in the America's Cup, so called because it was first won by the schooner America in 1851.

This is the 3 plus minute highlights of Day 4 Racing (Feb 21).

For the sailors in the audience, the 25 minute video review of the day's sailing can be found at this link.

If anyone is interested in the history of the race, which dates to 1851, there is a nice video that is short on the America's Cup site. There is also info not in the video. And highlights the phrase, “Your Majesty, there is no second” which has come to describe the nature of the competition. Match Racing at its finest.

More Problems for the Infrastructure in Texas

XKCD Dependency

People don't appreciate how thin the line is on a technological civilization. It is like a house of cards in many ways, or like this comic from XKCD. While the XKCD comic is about digital infrastructure, it could also be about most infrastructure. As power is restored for most Texans, water problems begin to mount.

And electric power is probably at the base of everything we do today.

Leaks caused by frozen pipes have pushed the state's water supplies to the brink. More than 14.9 million Texans, more than half the state's population, have disruptions in service, according to Tiffany Young, a spokeswoman for the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. More than 1,300 water supply systems and 62% of Texas counties are affected.

Say it again: More than 14 million people in Texas have no water. No drinking water. No water for sanitation. No water for cooking.

While you can go about your business if it was just that your power was out, once that power is restored, (you probably have a refridgerator full of spoiled food) if your pipes freeze, that is another kettle of fish. Plumbing will need to be ripped out and replaced. Carpets will probably need to be replaced. Drywall doesn't hold up well to being soaked. The lead photo at the CNN article linked at the top is of a ceiling fan, with icicles... Not all electrical appliances, like fans and such, respond well to being doused in water and then frozen.

And hindsight being 2020, someone, somewhere should have warned the people in Texas about frozen pipes and told them how to drain the system. Though there is a question in my mind of whether or not they would have believed it. (Freezing pipes? That can't happen in Texas!)

Next up will be the problem of how far into the future plumbers will be booked. They will do their own homes. Then their parents' homes. Then their friends...

The Organic Prepper actually has the more interesting take than CNN. Things Keep Getting EVEN WORSE in Texas: Frigid Temps, Blackouts, and an "Overwhelmed" Water System - The Organic Prepper

It’s important to keep in mind that the current weather conditions are very unusual for Texas. Many homes there aren’t built to withstand temperatures that freeze water pipes or with secondary heating systems that aren’t connected to the grid. The municipal infrastructures were also unprepared for weather of this magnitude.

I would say that today, in most places in the US, if the grid goes down for an extended time, people will be without heat. Oh, they might have a fireplace, but they don't have a stock of wood. Furnaces rely on fans, and digital thermostats.

There is also good info at The Organic Prepper's Prepping for a Blizzard: A Practical Survival Guide

We are told that renewable energy is good for the environment. How much energy will be burned in Texas over the coming year to fix this disaster, to boil water, to haul carpeting to the landfill, to manufacture new carpeting, and new plumbing fixtures and new drywall?

What You Don't Know...

It can ruin your day or your life. And what you don't know about options is probably a large amount of data. A 20-year-old died by suicide, thinking he’d lost more than $730,000 on Robinhood. Now his family is suing.

This has been kicking around in drafts for a while. Not quite since the GameStop kerffufle hit the news. I was going to delete it, but I think the lesson stands. I think it probably says something about the state of our education today, and the moral fiber of our nation. (Or lack thereof.)

Finance is not rocket science. But if you have never read a balance sheet, don't know how to calculate owner's equity, are confused on cash flows, and have never read the auditors' notes on an anual report, then you probably shouldn't jump right into the options market. Just sayin'.

I have been reading balance sheets and statements of cash flow since I inherited a handful of shares of stock in junior high. I worked as Info Tech support at a market-maker clearing firm that did back office processing for people yelling at each other on trading floors. (Back when they did that.) I don't invest in options because I want to sleep at night.

But I agree, that Robinhood should have told this kid what his haircut came to, or at least that you can't balance the accounts until both sides of the trade clear, which doesn't have to be until about an hour after trading closes, or at least that is how it was back in the day. (A haircut would be his net position and required capital.) It might be good to have noted that in the info shown him via the app. But move fast and who cares about the fallout... Or something. I also agree with the following quote.

“How was a 20-year-old with no income able to get assigned almost a million dollars worth of leverage?” Kearns wrote in his final note, explaining that he had never intended to take on so much risk.

I agree that people need to learn about investing. But that doesn't include just buying whatever is a fad today. Assets and liabilities. Income and expenses. Cash-flow. These are a good place to start. Or does anyone remember pets.com? No, of course they don't.

When do you buy? Why would you sell? What is the point of short selling, and why (oh why?) did the SEC eliminate the Uptick Rule? Or was it Congress that did that?

If you want to invest in options then you should know what a put and a call are, and what it means to buy a put versus sell a put. Ditto with the 2 positions relative to a call. You should know what your capital requirements are and what the rules for trading and clearance are. You shouldn't figure that out AFTER you write an option on a million dollars worth of stock.

Then there are futures contracts....

I'm not telling you what to do, except to learn something before you leap.

He Apparently Didn't Understand, "It's Over!"

Another case of the "How dare you life without me" attitude. Man killed in domestic dispute in northwest Harris County parking lot

He followed his ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend from a restaurant. Why? And then he "confronted" the couple. Again, why?

Oh, and there was a restraining order, which did no restraining.

The ex-boyfriend, who was shot in the chest, was transported to the hospital where he died, officials said. Another man was transported to the hospital to be treated for face lacerations.

It isn't clear who did the shooting.

“No one will enforce the law”

Because of course they are protecting criminals over regular, law-abiding folks. Welcome to the reality of 21st Century America. Homeowners in Miami-Dade having issues removing squatters despite obtaining court order from judge

Forget about the moratorium on evictions of people who hold leases. You still can't get rid of them, even if they don't pay. But squatters are being protected as well. At least in Miami-Dade they are.

“No one will enforce the law,” Harris said. “I have called the sheriff’s office five or six times. They said we can’t do anything because the Mayor of Dade County will not let us. And I’ve shot her a lot of e-mails.”

Harris said he spent $20,000 on legal fees to have Stewart removed through the courts and get the writ.

“It makes my blood boil,” he said. “I got a squatter living in my condo that has no right, no lease. I’m making the payments, and he refuses to leave, and no one will make him leave.”

Canada's Health Care Is SO Good, People Would Rather Die

Because why not. And besides, Old People are expensive. Quick Takes – Euthanasia in Canada: Killing the Lonely; Social Services so Bad People Would Rather Die; Homicidal Hospices

Isolation and loneliness, especially in the age of Corona-chan, is a growing mental health issue. In Canada, it is an excuse to kill.

“Good grief. We are told that euthanasia is ‘compassion.’ But how compassionate is it when last year in Canada, hundreds of sick people were euthanized because of loneliness?

Aparently they don't know how to cure lonliness.

Canada, which boasts of it’s universal healthcare, amongst other social services, is of such a high quality, apparently, that many people would literally rather die than deal with them.

And go figure. People with disabilities are "hardest hit."

It Isn't His Fault. Everything Is Someone Else's Fault

Responsibility? Personal Responsibility? What do you think this is, the 19th Century? Two Dead in Jefferson County Murder-Suicide | News, Sports, Jobs - The Times Leader

She broke up with him a few years back. So he brutally murdered her current boyfriend, then killed himself. Does this make sense to anyone?

This is the world that has been made, where no one is responsible for anything.

Abdalla said officers recovered cards Miller had stamped and was ready to mail, one to an ex-girlfriend in Las Vegas and another to a family member in West Virginia, “admitting his life was miserable and (blaming) the woman for everything.”

She was responsible for ruining his life. He was responsible for nothing.

And why was his life a mess? It might have been, in part, the felony drug-trafficing charge from 25 years ago. I'm sure that wasn't his fault either.

And the attitude of the sheriff leaves a lot to be desired. If his deputies had been there, they might have faced danger. Well we can't have the police facing danger, now can we. Better that innocent people die.
