F*c*book and the Downfall of Myanmar

Faine Greenwood: Facebook Destroys Everything: Part 1

Some background on the short-lived, democratically-elected government of Myanmar that was replaced by a military junta in 2021.

As this last dismal decade in Myanmar unfolded, one thing has become exceedingly clear: Facebook, in its rush to massively profit from getting an entire country on the Internet in just a few short years, played a key role in the country’s slide into hell. During that blood-soaked period from 2016 to 2018, website’s attention-hunting algorithms pumped vast amounts of ferocious anti-Rohingya content into the feeds of millions of Myanmar Facebook users, and the site failed over and over to counter dangerous hate speech, ignoring pleas from local activists, including some people I knew.

As I have said for years... I never trusted F*c*book. I have a user-id. I originally logged in about twice a year to change the password. Less frequently since they instituted better security. (My F*c*book account was hacked once, back when F*c*book didn't take security all that seriously.

Go read the whole thing. (Hat tip to Tam at View From The Porch: Tab Clearing...)

Production of the FGC-9 Rifle in Myanmar

Impro Guns has a report from a civil war. Production of the FGC-9 rifle led by SSTF Youths (Myanmar)

“KMN (Mizzima). Sagaing Division The head of the SSTF told Mizzima that five young members of the Salingyi Special Task Force, based in Sallingyi Township, were able to successfully manufacture the FGC 9 long gun. FGC 9, MK II – Stingray edition is a semi-auto gun that can shoot around 100 meters and uses 9mm ammunition. The head of the SSTF said that technicians are needed to continue producing advanced guns, and knowledgeable people are needed for the revolution.”

A 9mm carbine with an effective range of 100 meters, but it is

  1. better than nothing, and
  2. useful in ambush situations

The photo above is of an unrelated FGC-9. (That stands for F- Gun Control 9mm.) Click thru for photos of the guns being manufactured in Myanmar.
