The homeowner said he turned to go back inside his house, but the man followed him into the home.
At that point, the homeowner said he grabbed a baseball bat and hit the suspect.
The baseball bat wasn't enough to deter this guy. He charged the homeowner, who then drew a firearm, and shot him in the leg. He is clearly more charitable than I am. I would have gone straight to the firearm, and I would not have shot him in the leg.
Still, it ended the threat.
The suspect, who was identified as 37-year-old Joshua Arenas, was taken to the hospital for treatment.
After he got out of the hospital, he was arrested.
Tulsa police say a suspected burglar is in the hospital after being shot by a homeowner during a break-in overnight near 21st Street and Mingo Road.
After a confrontation, that ensued when the homeowner saw the guy on his security system, the homeowner shot him. At that point he ran, but he dropped his wallet along the way.
Investigators used identification found inside the wallet to help search for him while officers established a perimeter around the neighborhood.
I'm guessing that isn't how he saw his day working out.
Cops caught up with him, but he resisted, to the point of biting one officer.
Lt. JT Snoddy with the Tulsa Police Department said the suspect appeared to be under the influence.
I'm shocked.
It is early days in the investigation, but it is my understanding that Oklahoma has a fairly robust castle doctrine. Why? Because self-defense is a human right. (Hat tip to USA Carry)

Authorities say a man entered a neighbor’s house unannounced and began assaulting the homeowner.
The suspect was shot during the confrontation according to police.
He was taken to a local hospital, but he did not survive his wounds.
Midwest City, Oklahoma, is a suburb of Oklahoma City. It is about 5 miles east of downtown. More or less.
The investigation is in early days, but this sounds like self-defense to me, and while I am not a lawyer, it is my understanding that Oklahoma has a fairly robust version of the Castle Doctrine.

Ashlyn Caldwell is apparently a student at OSU, getting notifications from the university. She was on the strip and disturbed to discover that there was a shooting.
“You hear about shootings every day, but you never think that you’re going to witness one or like be in the same proximity as one, and it’s weird to see the strip today, it’s completely normal,” said Caldwell. “It’s like nothing happened, but I was here just 12 hours ago or whatever, and there was a shooting here.”
As Tolkien said, you can fence yourself in, but you cannot fence the world out. OSU and environs are not Mayberry RFD, they are in fact part of the Real World were crime can, and often does, happen. You are not protected by your zip code.
I doubt this will change Ashlyn Caldwell's outlook on life, or the outlook of any other university student in 2026.
Officials said it appeared to be a first-degree burglary, possibly turned self-defense.

Oklahoma has what's been called an extreme form of the Castle Doctrine, called Make My Day. That is how it was phrased when the law, overturning the judge-invented mandate for the "duty to retreat" in your own home. (Details at this link.)

Self-defense is a human right, and Oklahoma City is a long way from NYC.
On the judge-invented duty to retreat. No politician ever voted for a law that says you cannot defend your family in your own home. Prosecutors and judges, who hate self-defense (You must rely on the State, even for things it cannot provide) created that "duty" out of whole cloth.
[The female homeowner] said [her] ex-boyfriend kicked in her front door and caused a disturbance inside the home. The woman had a male friend staying over for safety reason. As the ex-boyfriend went to attack the male, the friend fired one shot hitting the ex-boyfriend.
The ex-boyfriend is in a local hospital in critical condition. I doubt that this will teach him anything.
No mention of any charges against anyone.
Defense of self, and of others, is a human right, and it seems to be your legal right in Oklahoma.
She refused to accept a counterfeit $100 bill, so he attacked her, and kept her from calling 911.
While he had his hands wrapped around her throat, she shot him.
So of course 7-Eleven fired her. They apparently think it would be better if she was dead, than that she shot her attacker.
Police confirmed that Dilyard is protected under Oklahoma's self-defense law.
However, she was terminated by 7-Eleven on Monday for using her own gun. "They said that they were going to separate from employment because of a violation of policy," Dilyard said.
The guy who got shot ran out of the store and called 911.
Thompson was arrested at the hospital and charged with assault and battery, threatening acts of violence, attempting to pass a fake bill, and a felony warrant for violating parole.
I hope she is hired by someone with better policies on self-defense.
Oklahoma has, or at least had, a strong version of the Castle Doctrine, or that is my understanding. Tulsa police investigate fatal shooting at Silver Oaks Apartments; self-defense claimed. I'm not clear on whether or not Oklahoma has a version of Stand Your Ground, covering self-defense outside the home, but that wouldn't be an issue here in either case.
A guy kicked in an apartment door. Not a good thing to do in Oklahoma.
Tulsa police are investigating a deadly shooting late Friday night after a man reportedly forced his way into an apartment near 71st and Yale.
When police showed up they found the guy who forced his way in, dead of a gunshot wound. They spoke to the guy who did the shooting, but did not arrest him.
Pro tip. Do. Not. Leave. Your. Car. Running. Not for an instant. Not while you just run into the store/house for something you forgot. Do. Not. You may as well put a sign on top of the vehicle that says, "Steal Me!"
In this particular case I don't really care if he was justified, or not. He was an idiot.
He explained that he came to the Dollar General to pick up a family member and left his car running and unlocked in the parking lot.
The man said he noticed somebody getting inside of his car while he was in the store and ran outside to confront him.
What do you think is going to happen? Do you really think that there are no bad people in your neighborhood? Do you really believe that you are protected by your zip code? You are not. And you are an idiot.
Sadly, felony stupidity is not a crime in Oklahoma.
And yes, someone will say, "But you should be able to ..." In a perfect world, people would leave your car alone. People would not break into your home. But in case you hadn't noticed, that "perfect world" is in a different zip code.
I'm sure Quindolyne "Q" Wilson's race had nothing to do with the fact that the police arrested him, and the DA tried to convict. I'm sure. I'm shocked that you would even think such a thing.
According to a police report from Arcadia police, Wilson stated he shot the victim because the man was hitting the children and had ignored multiple warnings to stop. Wilson remained at the scene and explained the situation to officers, but he was charged with a felony count of shooting with intent to kill and spent nine days in jail.
This case had nothing to do with Justice. The DA thought he could win. DAs love to win, and by and large they hate self-defense.
The man who was shot survived and was taken to the hospital.
A protective order was filed and granted against him a few days after the incident.
So it would seem that self-defense, and defense of others, IS legal in the state of Oklahoma. I'm sure that DAs across the state hate that. Self-defense is a human right.
Authorities say the woman who called police shot her child's father because he was assaulting her and threatened to kill her.
Police say she was questioned and showed multiple signs of domestic abuse. Officers say she has been released pending further investigation.
The gun-hating part of the Left also likes to go on at length about how you are more likely to shoot someone you know than a total stranger. There is a reason for that. You are more likely to have issues with people you know, and they don't even have to fall into this category of domestic violence.
"People you know" includes a lot of people aside from ex-boyfriends, ex-girlfriends, ex-husbands, etc. Coworkers turned stalker. People at your local coffee shop. And more. To say, or at least imply, that none of them could ever pose a threat is either naive or a lie.
So how is the world a better place if this woman would have been severely beaten, or beaten to death? Without the means of self-defense, the old and the infirm will be at the mercy of the young and the violent, the small can be beaten or killed by the large, and anyone can be overpowered by numbers of attackers. I wish the gun-hating part of the Left would explain how that world would be better, but I don't believe that they will.

Sarah McKinley was 18 years old in 2011. Her husband, Kenneth, had recently died from cancer, and she was left with a baby son in the outback of Oklahoma. Two guys who were armed, were trying to break in on New Year's Eve.
That's it right there. That's the Second Amendment. Not in some abstract legal argument. Not in a debate stage soundbite. Not in a history book. It's an 18-year-old widow left with nothing but grief, a baby, and forced to face down two armed men by herself. And the only reason she lived to tell the story and her son grew up with a mother is because she had the means to fight back.

On New Year’s Eve, 2011, Sarah was at home with her baby when she heard someone knocking on her door. She looked through the peephole and saw a man she did not recognize. She said he claimed to be a neighbor who needed help, but she did not believe him.
She said he had a suspicious look on his face and she felt uneasy. She did not open the door and told him to go away. But instead of leaving the premises, he went to the back door and tried to break in, and even threatened to kill her, “Let me in, or I’ll kill you,” he thundered from the backdoor.
It took about 20 minutes for the intruder to break in the door. She shot him with the shotgun she had armed herself with.
The police arrived shortly after Sarah shot the intruder and found him dead on the floor. He was identified as Justin Martin, 24, who had a criminal record and was holding a 12-inch hunting knife when he died. He had an accomplice, a 29-year-old man, Dustin Stewart, who had fled the scene when he heard the gunshot. He was later driven to the police station by his parents.
Oklahoma has The Castle Doctrine, which means you can defend yourself in your own home. Sarah's shooting was deemed Justified.
The second guy, Dustin Stewart, was sentenced to life in prison. He admitted that they targeted Sarah because they knew her husband had died, and they thought she probably still had the painkillers he used for his cancer.
Notice 2 things. She called 911. Cops did not save the day. They showed up after the fact and dealt with the aftermath. In this case it was a dead bad guy and not a dead mother and child. The other thing is that 911 operators, even in a place like Oklahoma, which recognizes your right to defend yourself, cannot tell you what you can legally do. Not their job. (That would be practicing law without a license.) You need to know what you can do.
At least the ending was as good as it could be. The news story contains an interview with Sarah MicKinley, which I found interesting.
Pontotoc County Sheriff Arnold Scott said someone entered two homes on County Road 3560 around 2:30 in the morning on Saturday.
Upon entering the second house, the intruder was shot and killed by the homeowner.
Byng, Oklahoma is about 60 miles southeast of Oklahoma City.
Sheriff Scott says the intruder was native. The scene was turned over to Chickasaw Lighthorse Police, who continue to investigate.
I don't know if the jurisdiction being the native police will have any impact on the case. I know that Oklahoma generally considers self-defense to be your legal right.
[Glynn Ray] Simmons served 48 years, one month and 18 days, making him the longest imprisoned U.S. inmate to be exonerated, according to data kept by The National Registry of Exonerations.
The detective in the case, or maybe there was more than one, said a witness identified Mr. Simmons, when in fact the witness identified two other people aside from Mr. Simmons and the other man who was convicted of the crime.
And of course, there is a lawsuit. Rightfully so, I would say.
The lawsuit alleges police falsified a report by stating that a witness who was wounded in the shooting identified Simmons and co-defendant Don Roberts as the two who robbed the store and shot the clerk.
The lawsuit also alleges police withheld evidence that the witness identified two other people as suspects.
Why did cops do this? You would have to ask the lying SOB who is being sued, because I don't know how you could do this to another human being just because you are too lazy to do your job.
In December, a judge exonerated Simmons, saying there was “clear and convincing evidence” that he did not commit the crime and Simmons has received $175,000 from the state of Oklahoma for wrongful conviction.
Two women are dead and five suspects from Cimarron County, Oklahoma, are behind bars, charged in a murder conspiracy so bizarre that, when my brother first told me about the story, he said, “You’re going to need some stick pins and a lot of yarn to explain this one.”
Police at the scene told KOCO 5 that a married couple and a child were inside with the victim, but the relationship between them is still under investigation. Officers said the victim pulled out a gun, which is when the homeowner shot him.
And as usual, reporters have trouble telling the difference between victims, and perpetrators. If you pull a weapon, and I defend myself, you are not a victim.
Cops haven't arrested anyone, but made it clear that the DA decides charges, not cops.
Bartlesville Police say a woman shot and killed a man who broke into her apartment.
Police say the man was 23 years old and that the woman told police she didn’t know him.
As for the neighbors, they apparently think that crime happens in "other kinds of places," or something.
“You live in a place, and you think ‘oh, we’re safe here,"' said [Lisa] Robertson. "'It’s fine.’ But the world is just getting more and more crazy every day.”
That is the general consensus apparently, or at least the reporter makes it sound like they spoke to several people. Maybe, just maybe, Ms. Robertson is going to consider that when seconds count, police are minutes away.
“Because I think, what if in that moment, I’m getting my child out the door for school and somebody just comes right through," said Robertson. "And in that moment, what do I do?”
The only thing you can do in the instant you are confronted by a violent criminal, is comply, or defend yourself. Compliance can be the first step in launching a counter ambush when the chance presents itself, but if you are not prepared to defend yourself, your options in that instant are limited.
I don't expect that she will change her ways. Ms. Robertson will be upset for a few days, and think about what could happen for a bit, and then she will go back to believing she is safe.
As for the law in Oklahoma...
Bartlesville Police say the law gives people the right to use deadly force to protect themselves inside their homes.
“It’s very unfortunate, and we’re glad no one else was hurt in the process," said Captain Daniel Elkins with Bartlesville Police. "The homeowner felt like they had to do what was necessary, and that’s ultimately their choice.”
Midwest City, Oklahoma is a suburb of Oklahoma City.
Police told KOCO 5 that the suspect tried breaking into a home in the 2100 block of Flannery Drive, near Reno Avenue and Midwest Boulevard. The homeowner then shot the suspect, and they ran from the scene.
Cops found the injured guy, and took him to get his wounds treated. No word on charges was released. See below for more info.
Self-defense is a human-right, and as far as I can tell supported by the laws of Oklahoma.
He was irate that she left him. He called her 170 times between 12:30 PM Tuesday and 11:45 AM Wednesday. No one knows how he found the home of the new boyfriend.
He broke into the home, shouted at the homeowner, and "advanced on him." The homeowner retreated to a bedroom and retrieved a firearm.
When Delarosa opened the door, the homeowner shot him in the chest.
The guy who got shot is still in the hospital, but he is also under arrest for burglary and stalking. The phrase, "It's over!" really needs to be understood by more people.
As for the neighbor...
“My neighborhood quiet, my neighbors are quiet, nothing like this every happens around here, so it was a shock really,” said Breeden.
You are not protected by you zip code. And when an irate person, bent on violence is in your home, the police cannot protect you, because they are not there.
The man was shot during an "altercation" with the homeowner. He was not shot because he was vandalizing an air conditioner. He was shot because he constituted a threat.
Officers interviewed the homeowner and released him.
Which sort of tells you how police view the incident.
Oklahoma has a fairly clear history, and laws on the books that support, self-defense. But even Oklahoma (I'm not a lawyer) doesn't say you can open fire on anyone on your property.
