Meep and the Charity for Men's Health

Movember Foundation raises money to raise awareness of men's health during the month of November. Meep lost her husband to cancer last year, so this means something to her. The Week in Meep: All Souls Day, Movember, Obra Dinn, Down with DST

Here are the places you can donate to the Movember Foundation, which supports men’s health, specifically focusing on prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men’s mental health.

Click thru. There is probably someone in your life who could take better care of himself. Please consider donating.

Meep also has links to past years' Memento Mori posts. (That is Latin, for "remember, you must die.")

The Other McCain and Family Funerals

Robert Stacy McCain has gotten some sad news. Carry Me Home to See My Kin

An unexpected road trip suddenly looms, as I just got word that my Aunt Joanne (actually a second cousin, but we kids called her “aunt” by courtesy) has died at her home in Montgomery, Alabama. Joanne’s mother was my maternal grandmother’s younger sister, and Joanne was especially close to my mother’s younger sister.

If you can click thru and hit the big yellow button to help defray costs.

Honoring family isn't something that happens much anymore. Even knowing your extended family beyond cousins is rare today.

RIP Jim Lovell - 25 March 1928 to 7 August 2025

From The Silicon Graybeard: Jim Lovell, Gemini and Apollo Astronaut Passes at 97

SiGraybeard is better placed to do the honors. The image is from NASA's portrait of Lovell in 1969

Jim Lovell, veteran of four space flights including the famous Apollo 13 passed away yesterday, August 7 in Lake Forest, Illinois. That short summary only hints at his contributions to the Gemini and Apollo programs, and space history.

Jim Lovell was commander of the Apollo 13 mission. He was played by Tom Hanks in the movie. One of the best things they did was give Jim Lovell a cameo in the movie. He is only in the movie for a few seconds at the end, but he trades salutes with and shakes hands with Tom Hanks.

Lance Reddick: 7 June 1962 – 17 March 2023

This is a sad day. ‘John Wick’ Star Lance Reddick Dies at 60

There was a time when 60 seemed old. Since I'm older than 60, not so much anymore. "Natural causes" is what is listed. I can't help think that what they meant was "died suddenly" from The Poke™.

I had seen him in other things, like Fringe, but his appearance in John Wick made me pay attention. It wasn't a huge part, but he was pivotal to the world in that film. And he was perfect.

This the scene from John Wick in which we meet Lance Reddick's character: John Wick checks into the Continental.
