The Horror of a Post-Christian World

The Other McCain on Friedrich Nietzsche vs. Robert E. Lee

This is a complicated read, and no mistake. It covers a lot of ground, including - tangentially - why college students are so easily indoctrinated.

One of the benefits of being a bad student is that, by the time I began to take the world of ideas seriously, I was already an adult, with a job, a wife, three kids and a mortgage. It was in the early 1990s, when I was on the staff of the Rome (Ga.) News-Tribune, that I began haunting the local used book store, snapping up old volumes at 50 cents or a dollar each, pursuing an autodidactic course of remediation, to fill in the gaps in my knowledge that had by then become apparent to me.

I think you will find it an interesting read.

US Has Negative Migration in 2025

US, for 1st time in 50 years, experienced negative net migration in 2025: Report - ABC News

The U.S. experienced negative net migration in 2025 for the first time in at least half a century as a result of the Trump administration's immigration crackdown, according to a report released Tuesday by the Brookings Institution.

The range is quite large, somewhere between -295,000 and -10,000. This leads me to believe that their statistics are not very good, since they can't nail it down to within an order of magnitude.

They go on to claim that ICE and Border and Customs Protection haven't deported as many people as they claim, and the slowdown in arrivals is really because the economy under the Republican administration is bad, or something

Hat tip to William Teach at Pirate's Cove. Good News: America Has Negative Migration For 1st Time In 50 Years

I was told by Democrats, their pet media, and Never Trumpers that the only way to accomplish anything close to this was passing a bunch of laws that would really mean legal status for millions of illegals/migrants/fake asylum seekers with a wink wink promise of securing the borders

Though the link to ABC News was broken when I first looked.

Hilton Franchise Owner Lied About DHS Policy

But then they weren't going to admit that they hate law and order. CEO saves Hilton - Don Surber

ICE and DHS are headed to (or already in) Minnesota. The Hilton in one of the impacted areas canceled all of their reservations, because reasons.

The franchise owner said, “We are in touch with the impacted guests to ensure they are accommodated. We do not discriminate against any individuals or agencies and apologize to those impacted. We are committed to welcoming all guests and operating in accordance with brand standards, applicable laws, and our role as a professional hospitality provider.”

But a few hours later, rebel journalist Nick Sortor went to the hotel in question and found the franchisee lied.

Click thru for the details on the lie.

Nassetta [CEO of Hilton] wasn’t pleased. Politicians lie all the time. In business, you get to lie only once. The CEO fired the franchisee. The company’s stock popped back up.

Go read the whole thing. The first section about how conservatives don't go to protests, they just vote with their wallets is very good.

I know this is a day or two behind the news... so am I. (See this post) There were photos on social media of the Hilton sign being removed from in front of the hotel in question.

Academics Versus Guns - What They Get Wrong

From Shooting News Weekly: What Academics Consistently Miss When Examining America’s Gun Culture

Academics, mostly, hate guns. Is Professor Yamane the exception that "proves the rule?"

Fourteen years into my personal and sociological journey through American gun culture, I am constantly reminded of how difficult it is to find scholarship on everyday firearm use. Despite the longstanding presence of a robust legal gun culture, the social scientific study of guns is dominated by criminological and epidemiological studies of gun violence.

Click thru. Or you can find the original at How I Fell for Guns from Light Over Heat with Professor David Yamane Light Over Heat with Professor David Yamane

There is no such thing as an anti-gun gun range - Tamara Keel (probably)

And you should be reading Professor Yamane's writing (see the link above), and watching his videos.

Speaking of videos, Professor Yamane has a 5 minute video on this topic. How I Fell for Guns (Hint: Shooting is Fun) and Free Download Opportunity (Light Over Heat #139). The article he discusses goes into much more detail. It is only generally available for a month... 3 weeks at this point.
