Due to Technical Difficulties...

Actually more difficulties of a personal nature, this blog is on pause.

Ivy League Worse than North Korea

Admit it. You always suspected that was the case. North Korean defector says 'even North Korea was not this nuts' after attending Ivy League school | Fox News

One of several hundred North Korean defectors settled in the United States, Park, 27, transferred to Columbia University from a South Korean university in 2016 and was deeply disturbed by what she found.

"I expected that I was paying this fortune, all this time and energy, to learn how to think. But they are forcing you to think the way they want you to think," Park said in an interview with Fox News. "I realized, wow, this is insane. I thought America was different but I saw so many similarities to what I saw in North Korea that I started worrying."

There is really little to add. Just go read it.

18 Month Sentence for Shooting 2 People

If you make something cheaper, you will see more of it. Man sentenced to 18 months for 2019 funeral shooting near Frederick

He shot 2 people after a funeral, related to what the polcie call an "altercation" at the funeral.

A man charged after a 2019 shooting at a funeral near Frederick is serving an 18-month sentence after pleading guilty to first-degree assault.

The other charges were dropped. They don't say what those charges were.

This isn't Baltimore, though at about 45 miles from that city and about 40 miles to Washington, DC, it may qualify as a suburb.

Because keeping violent offenders in jail is unfair, so prosecutors reduce or "abandon" charges to make their lives easier. The problem is that is also makes the criminals lives easier.

Another City Sets New Record for Homicides

I'm sure that the people of Louisville wish they hadn't set this record. Louisville homicides: 2021 breaks all-time record of 173 murders

I expected that the previous record would have been decades ago, but the previous record was set just last year.

Two deadly shootings less than six hours apart have pushed Louisville to 175 homicides in 2021, surpassing last year's grim record for murders in a year.

I'm sure there will press conferences in which the politicians will explain that crime is really down and that there is nothing to fear and you should keep voting for the same politicians and the same failed policies.

Of this year's homicides, the vast majority of victims — about 75% — were Black, police data show, continuing to raise alarms about the disproportionate impact of gun violence on the city's Black communities.

But enforcing the law is racist. Or something. You should pay no attention to the statistics.

Civilization rests on security. Without law and order, you are, as Hobbes said many years ago, you are living in a "State of War.".

Hereby it is manifest that, during the time men live without a common power to keep them all in awe, they are in that condition which is called war, and such a war as is of every man against every man. [SNIP]

In such condition there is no place for industry, because the fruit thereof is uncertain, and consequently no culture of the earth, no navigation nor use of the commodities that may be imported by sea, no commodious building, no instruments of moving and removing such things as require much force, no knowledge of the face of the earth; no account of time, no arts, no letters, no society, and, which is worst of all, continual fear and danger of violent death, and the life of man solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short.

Cop Shoots Man Pointing Rifle at Other Cops

That is how the headline would read, if they were not waging a war against law and order. Warwick police officer with 6 years experience fatally shot a 49-year-old. How it unfolded

Warwick police said [the dead guy] pointed the rifle at officers several times during the confrontation, advancing toward them and then disregarding their orders to drop the rifle.

It may have been suicide-by-cop. It may have been something else.

But what should a cop do when a guy is pointing a rifle at people?

Now they make no mention of what kind of rifle. And since they are clearly doing everything they can to paint cops in a bad light, I am just going to point out that the dreaded AR-15 assault rifle is one of the most popular rifles today. But I can only wonder why they don't say anything about what type of rifle. Do they think an eeeevil AR-15 would justify the cops actions, or are they just not interested in reporting the facts of the case.

Of course the Left is going to be all "Defund the police" over this, because they shot somone! But if the details hold up, it seems to be justified. What would you have them do? Die?

The Ice Bridge

Yes has had a lot of personnel changes over the years, but the current incarnation is making music that in many ways reminds me of the music from the 1970s. I suppose that since Steve Howe is back as guitarist that makes since. (He played guitar on Fragile, one of my favorite albums from that era.) And the keyboardist, Geoff Downes, seems to be channeling Rick Wakeman at times.

Anyway they relased an album when I wasn't paying attention. I haven't heard the whole thing, I have only heard a few songs as they've come across the playlists served up by the music services.

This is "The Ice Bridge" by Yes from their October 1, 2021 album The Quest. It is the first song off the album. I hope you like it as much as I do.

There Is Still Much to be Thankful For

The Other McCain reminds us of that. Thanksgiving in Georgia

It’s easier to complain about our misfortunes and disappointments — the Raiders beat the Cowboys and the Bills beat the Saints — than to be grateful that our lives are basically OK, in an age where it seems it’s becoming more difficult to be basically OK.

Go read the whole thing. It should make you feel a little better about life, even in the face of everything behind the #LetsGoBrandon phenomenon.

World Chess Championship Starts Today

The International Chess Federation (FIDE) held the opening ceremonies yesterday, and the first game is today.World Chess Championship 2021 starts in Dubai

The match for the world chess leadership is being held with the support of The International Chess Federation (FIDE) between the current world champion Magnus Carlsen and the winner of the Candidates Tournament in 2020/21 Ian Nepomniashchii.

Actually, I haven't checked, but given the location of Dubai, the first game is probably already over.

The prize fund of the championship is 2 million euros. According to the regulations, the participants will play a total of 14 games. The first game will be played today, on November 26th, and the final game on December 14th. If the score in the classics is equal, the final match will be held on December 15th in a tie-break.

Winner doesn't take all of €2 million, but winner does take most by a pretty significant margin. They also each got an upfront payment out of that fund to cover travel expenses for spending a month or so in Dubai.

As much as I enjoy chess, I can't watch the games live. They are streaming in several locations if you are interested. You can (usually) replay the games at Chess.com in less time than they take in real life, but I am not sure if you need a membership for that or not.

Magnus Carlsen has been world champion for 8 years. Ian Nepomniachtchi won the 2019 challengers tournament. (The World Champion match was delayed due to COVID from 2019.)

That is just one shy of tying the all-time record set just last year.

Because Keeping Violent Offenders in Jail Would Be Unfair

It certainly isn't fair to the victims. #52: Man who shot driver in South Loop on Saturday was AWOL from a pending felony case, prosecutors say - CWB Chicago

An eight-time convicted felon opened fire on a busy South Loop street corner Saturday evening, striking a man who was waiting for a traffic light to change near the Roosevelt CTA station, prosecutors said. The accused man, 36-year-old Christople Davis, was AWOL on a pending felony case at the time of the shooting.

Davis is the 52nd person accused of killing, trying to kill, or shooting someone in Chicago this year while awaiting trial for a felony.

The powers that be, in what passes for Chicago's Criminal Justice System, still maintain that their lenient bail system does NOT contribute to crime by way of recidivism. That number (52) doesn't include the people where the charges were dropped, and they went back out to commit more crime. It doesn't include case where they didn't try to shoot or kill someone, but still committed a different crime.

‡ That list of people is headed by Crimesha, otherwise known as Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx, and her band of non-prosecuting attorneys. There are a few judges on that list, and I'm sure I could see how Mayor Groot (Lori Lightfoot) and others contribute.

Do You Think a Woke DA Can Change?

Can a leopard change his spots? Woke Philadelphia DA finally gets tough: Says whoever killed pregnant woman will face TWO murder charges for killing her and her unborn baby as cops question a suspect

It is too little to late.

First the main detail of this case:

Jessica Covington, a 32-year-old pregnant Philadelphia woman, was shot dead on Saturday night as she was unloading gifts from her own baby shower.

Because of the public outcry the DA is suddenly interested in enforcing the law. Suddenly.

There have been 491 homicide victims in 2021 - a 14 per cent increase from last year's number of 436, and 283 in 2019.

Krasner boasts on his website that he has cut incarceration rates by 24,800 years, cut supervision by 102,400 years, never used the death penalty and helped exonerate 23 people.

Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw has said that Philadelphia’s criminal justice system has become a 'revolving door' for repeat gun offenders since Krasner was sworn into office in January 2018.

Because keeping violent criminals in jail is unfair, so he's been turning them loose. And low and behold they have a 14% increase in murders. Who could have foreseen that?

Actually, anyone with 2 brain-cells to run together would have predicted that outcome.

Hat tip to The Other McCain and Killadelphia Update.

Last year, the per-capita homicide rate in Philadelphia was worse than Chicago. It takes a lot of effort to be worse than Chicago, but Philadelphia — a/k/a “Killadelphia” — is up to the challenge, and is now on pace to break the city’s all-time annual murder total of 500, a record set in 1990 at the height of the crack cocaine epidemic. Basically, you could put police crime-scene tape around the entire city; every sidewalk in Philadelphia is covered in chalk outlines of slain victims.

There is more info at both links. Click thru. In particular, The Other McCain has info on the nationwide crime wave that has been fostered by "progressive" reforms of the Criminal Justice System.

And then there is this, from Robert Stacy McCain:

Rhetoric that demonizes law-abiding gun owners is necessary to the Democratic Party agenda of absolving themselves and their constituents of responsibility. Nothing that goes wrong in Philadelphia — or Chicago, Baltimore, Detroit, St. Louis, etc. — is the fault of the people directly involved, because those people vote Democrat. The voters who elect Democrats must be held blameless for their problems, and the blame must be transferred to scapegoats — which is why phrases like “white privilege” and “systemic racism” have entered the political lexicon.

Go on, read the whole thing

Vigilante Justice in Spokane

That is old school, but ultimately he got caught. Man killed his daughter's boyfriend for selling her into sex trafficking ring, police say.

His daughter's boyfriend sold her to a sex-trafficking ring. He went and rescued her - think Liam Neeson in Taken. Later, after she was safe, he found out where that boyfriend was going to be.

When the father learned that his daughter's boyfriend was going to be at a location in Airway Heights, Eisenman drove there and waited for the 19-year-old to arrive.

"During that encounter Eisenman abducted the victim, tying him up and placing him in the trunk of a vehicle. Eisenman subsequently assaulted the victim by hitting him in the head with a cinder block and then stabbed him repeatedly, causing his death," police said.

He left that car in the woods with the body in the trunk, but someone moved it into town, where the cops found it. The father was arrested.

The saying about vendetta: Dig 2 graves, one for your target and one for yourself. And while I do understand vendetta, I think that he could have, and should have, relied on the courts in this case.

This is the video from Donut Operator, who has a YouTube channel I quite like. Dad Smokes Daughter's BF Who Sold Her to Trafficking Ring. The ad lasts about a minute.

As Donut says, that isn't the first time something like that has happened. In 1984 Gary Plauché was charged with the vigilante killing of Jeff Doucet, a man who had abducted and abused his son. The killing - an execution really - was all caught on video. Plauché entered a plea of No Contest to manslaughter and was given a suspended sentence, community service, and probation. But that was a different time.

Freddie Mercury: 5 September 1946 — 24 November 1991

Freddie Mercury died on November 24th in 1991 at the age of 45. It was quite a loss for music. Imagine the music we missed out on over the past 30 years.

If anyone mentions him today, they will probably bring up "Bohemian Rhapsody." That is a wonderful song, but it will be done to death. I thought we could listen to another song, that also highlights his singing ability. Anyway, BR came from the 1975 album A Night at the Opera. About 1 year after that album came out, the follow-on album was released. Given what a monster A Night at the Opera was, you would expect Queen to try to match it.

This song is "You Take My Breath Away" by Queen from the 1976 album A Day at the Races. The version we have today is actually the 2014 remastered version.

If you love "Bohemian Rhapsody" you may want to check out a Rick Beato video. Episode 107 of What Makes This Song Great?

I suppose there is also a good chance that whoever doesn't mention "Bohemian Rhapsody" will bring up "We Will Rock You / We Are The Champions." I guess I think they will both be over done, as if those were the only 2 good songs by Queen.

Whenever I listen to Queen, I get bummed by the thought that Freddie Mercury died too soon. But that is true of so many artists, and not just Rock & Roll singers. Still, the music he did give us is amazing, and it is special sin to allow sorrow for the things you've lost to stop you from enjoying the things you have.

"A Failing Regime"

With the DAs that have been installed in the major cities, things aren't going to be getting better any time soon. Homicide Rates in 2020 Surged to a 24-Year High. It's Another Sign of a Failing Regime. | Mises Wire

In case you doubted that things were bad...

With full-year data for 2020 now available on the FBI’s Crime in the United States report, we can see that those predictions were right. According to the report, the homicide rate in the United States rose to 6.5 per 100,000 in 2020, which is the highest rate reported since 1997—a twenty-four-year high.

We can debate the issue of "Why," but it is clear that this is an historic increase in the murder rate.

There is significant disagreement over the measurement of homicide rates in the early twentieth century, and data is especially spotty before the FBI established the Uniform Crime Report system in 1930. There is much more consensus, however, that homicide rates were high by today’s standards during the early 1930s. These rates began to decline rapidly after 1934, and this began a long downward trend in homicide that lasted until the late 1950s. This trend bottomed out at 4 per 100,000 in 1957. By 1965, homicide rates had begun a rapid ascent, climbing from 4.6 per 100,000 in 1963 and peaking at 9.8 per 100,000 in 1980. Homicide rates remained at elevated levels throughout the 1980s, but went into steep decline after 1993, reaching 4.4 per 100,000—a fifty-one-year low—in 2014.

So of course, as we were experiencing a 50-year-low in homicides, it was time to abandon some of the policies, like Broken Windows, that drove those rates down. Because those policies were unfair. Who is all this crime unfair to? Who benefits?

On the other hand, the magnitude of 2020’s increase is sizable and alarming. Measured as a percentage increase, 2020’s increase is simply the largest ever recorded.

As I said, I expect things to get worse before they get better.

Tolerance - Except for Differences of Opinion

What's the opposite of Diversity? University. University fires administrator for discriminating against police chief who voted for Trump | The College Fix

It is amazing that she was fired. Maybe there is some home for The University of North Dakota.

She pretty much demanded to know who the head of Campus Security had voted for in 2016. He answered honestly and she was flabbergasted. How could anyone vote for Trump?

In July, Administrative Law Judge Hope Hogan ruled that [Vice President for Student Affairs & Diversity, Cara] Halgren had neither harassed [UND Police Chief Eric] Plummer nor created a “hostile environment,” but she had “discriminated” against him based on his political beliefs. Halgren appealed the ruling, and her appeal was dismissed.

Finally, in mid-September, Halgren was fired.

I think I would have lied, given the state of most university campuses, but then I would never work on a university campus in the 21st Century.

But the discrimination went on for a while of years, and administrators did nothing about it, because she was discriminating against the right viewpoint. Crimethink must be punished.

I Guess Video Can Be a Defensive Weapon

But there are better choices. FOX 35 Exclusive: Interview with victim of alleged Zac Stacy attack

The Zac Stacy attack against Kristin Evans went viral, which means that the authorities can't ignore it. They usually ignore this kind of thing.

She told FOX 35 that she has filed reports against Stacy in the past. She said she felt she had to go public with this one so that her case wouldn’t get overlooked again.

"The state would’ve gotten to it whenever they got to it and maybe I wouldn’t sleep for a month or two or he could get away with a completely," said Evans.

Because why would they get involved in that kind of thing? Not a high priority, apparently.

Blackbird

Another round of my (fruitless) quest to make people understand that what goes by the name of Heavy Metal today is what we called Hard Rock back in the dark ages of the pre-Walkman 1970s.

Today's song is definitely Rock & Roll, if a bit low-key in parts. Guitars, drums, with no screaming and none of the Death Metal, Death Growl. And there is a nice guitar solo that that starts at about 4 minutes and 35 seconds in. It doesn't last long enough, of course. They never do.

Alter Bridge is made up of guitarist Mark Tremonti (Creed, Tremonti, etc.), vocalist and rhythm guitarist Myles Kennedy (vocalist for Slash's backing band), bassist Brian Marshall (Creed), and drummer and keyboardist Scott Phillips (Creed).

I have been trying to decide if Myles Kennedy's singing reminds me of someone. He definitely sounds like his singing would have been at home on a 1970s Rock & Roll station. Here's a link to the lyrics.

This is "Blackbird" by Alter Bridge. It is the title song to their 2007 album.

The Trial and the Verdict That Didn't Get National Media Attention

This verdict surprised me more than the Rittenhouse verdict, though that was surprising. Andrew Coffee IV found not guilty on all counts of murder.

Indian River County in Florida is on the Atlantic coast, about halfway between Palm Beach and Daytona Beach, or about 40 miles south of Cape Canaveral. It is just about due east of St. Petersburg and Tampa Bay.

In 2017, in Indian River County, Florida, Sheriff's deputies show up at the home of Andrew Coffee and his girlfriend Alteria Woods, and throw a flashbang grenade into his home. He thought that he was under attack, and opened fire. Sheriff's deputies returned fire, killing Ms. Woods. Coffee was charged with murder.

Before the case went to the jury's hand, Coffee took the stand to defend himself — blaming deputies for his girlfriend's death.

The defense said Coffee was asleep and thought the flash-bang was gunfire so he fired his gun because he thought the was under attack.

“I was trying to protect me and Alteria and I thought I was doing that, but I feel I didn't protect her. I can't sleep with that ... they killed her,” Coffee said.

Prosecutors maintain that deputies "announced" their presence, but I'm not clear on how they did that. It's clear that they didn't ring the doorbell, or do anything civilized. It was a "drug raid" in the middle of the night, so I read that as "no knock." The flashbang probably went off within seconds of someone shouting "Police!"

The DA was disappointed that the jury didn't pin the blame for everything that the cops did on who they had designated as the bad guy of the day. But then DAs HATE self-defense. I sort of wish I had a "Cops Behaving Recklessly" category of posts.

Coffee was found guilty on one count of "possession of a firearm by a convicted felon." He has yet to be sentenced for that. If he was in Chicago, there is a good chance that charge would have been dropped, but he is in Indian River County, Florida

How's That Bail Reform Working Out?

At least no one got murdered - for this story. Men are charged with having guns, selling drugs while on bond for shootings and murder, records show - CWB Chicago

[Cook County Board President Toni] Preckwinkle and [Cook County chief judge Timothy] Evans insist that the individuals who are released don’t contribute to increasing crime.

Recently, several people have been charged with new felonies while awaiting trial for allegedly murdering or shooting people, sometimes while on electronic monitoring. Here are some examples:

If you make something cheaper, you will see more of it. The cost of crime has been reduced - as far as the criminals are concerned - and so there is more crime. And the powers that be, stamping their feet and screaming that you are lying about it, won't change the facts.

Does This Mean that People are Waking Up to the Security/Privacy Issue?

Somehow I doubt it, though it may be a start.

A Feral Irishman Musical Interlude

A song from Riverside. ♫♪♫ Acronym Love.... Riverside ♫♪♫.... I love the guitar work on this song.....

Is this a rock ballad? "Acronym Love" is a nice song, with a nice guitar solo, and still isn't too jarring, and though it starts as a ballad, it probably doesn't qualify overall, as the energy builds toward the end.

At least it ramps up, so it probably won't be too much to endure before the coffee kicks in.

A nation of p***ies is our next generation

Yet Another Failure of the Victim-selection Process

He apparently thought that robbing a gas station was a good idea. Gas station clerk fatally shoots alleged armed robber at Circle K in Bossier City

Police officials say it happened around 3 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 14 at the Circle K in the 2800 block of Airline Drive. The clerk at the gas station fatally shot a would-be armed robber, police say.

The investigation is ongoing, but it sure sounds like the police think this is self-defense.

And self-defense is a human-right.

I Can't Wait For the USA to Have Socialized Medicine Like the UK

I'm sure that will be in next year's "infrastructure bill." Delays to ambulance handovers at A&E 'are costing lives' in scandal affecting up to 160,000 a year | Daily Mail Online

Shortages of staff and beds in the UK's National Health Service (NHS) Hospitals, and in particular in "Accident and Emergency Wards," what we call the ER, causes ambulances to queue up outside the hospitals, forcing patients to wait. They wait for hours in some cases. The chart to the right indicates how the wait to be seen in A&E wards has grown over time. And while the NHS is experiencing staff shortages, vaccine mandates are not expected untill next spring. These are just regular staff shortages.

A damning report revealed up to 160,000 patients each year may be affected due to the long periods waiting to be admitted. Of these, about 12,000 suffer 'severe harm', according to the document written by NHS ambulance bosses in England.

And since ambulances are stuck waiting outside of hospitals, it takes 55 minutes, on average, to get an ambulance to respond to an emergency call. Some people are waiting MUCH longer.

A 92-year-old diabetic spent nearly 14 hours lying on the floor covered in blood while waiting for an ambulance.

He had fallen.

But hey, it didn't cost him anything - except for his long-term medical issues from the fall.

People forget that just because you have health insurance, doesn't mean you will be able to find health care when you need it.

Mayor Groot Has Lost Her Mind

Let me count the ways why not. Lori Lightfoot Open to Chicago Exploring Buying Bears: ‘Why Not?'

Why not? Well here are a few reasons, not that I had to dig deep.

  1. The team is not for sale
  2. There is no reason to believe that the owners would sell
  3. Chicago is flat broke
  4. And you have more important stuff to worry about

So if she can get past all of that, then sure, Chicago could buy the team.

And Groot is worrying about the Bears because crime is down, and peace has broken out, and the schools are in top notch shape, and business is booming, and jobs are plentiful, and... Or maybe not.

Who Had "Plague of Scorpions" on Their World Disaster Bingo Card?

I was expecting alien invasion, but this actually more biblical. Egypt hit by plague of scorpions as bizarre 'scorpionado' leaves hundreds hospitalised

Reports of the "scorpionado" came after several days of hail, rainfall and flooding battered the region.

Situated on the banks of the River Nile, Aswan is one of the world's driest cities.

I could see Sweet Metor of Death, Alien Invasion, Yellowstone caldera Eruption, etc. but I didn't seen plague of scorpions coming.

And just because, here is "Rock You Like a Hurricane" by the Scorpions.

The Left Won't Be Happy Until They Destroy Everything

Everything must burn. Rittenhouse Verdict Reactions Show What ‘White Supremacy’ Means to the Left

First off, Race: The three men Kyle Rittenhouse shot, in Self-defense, were white. Kyle is white. But it is all about RACISM.

Then there is the strange list of things that is traumatic to the Left.

People who claimed to be traumatized by President Trump’s mean tweets had no such aversion to acts of violent destruction — far more harmful than anything Trump said — when this wanton vandalism could be justified, in their minds, as “racial justice” protests.

As for the destruction.

The Left’s rhetoric about “white supremacy,” “systemic racism,” etc., reflects a fundamental hostility to civilization, per se.

And that is the goal. To burn every city to the ground.

Click thru. There is so much more.

They Were In His Home

But he is still worried about being prosecuted. ‘I killed both of them’: 911 caller details why he shot 2 Fayetteville teens, claims self-defense. This incident took place in October, but the 911 call has just been released.

Maybe he knows that prosecutors HATE self-defense.

They apparently thought it would be a good idea to break into an occupied home. They were wrong, and they paid with their lives.

The caller said they “don’t know how many rounds I shot” when he took aim at 19-year-old Hunter Markham and a 17-year-old, whose identity was not released due to them being a minor.

According to the call, the thieves also had weapons.

The caller said after they shot the teens he put his gun on the counter of the home and went outside to help tend to his nephew who had been shot in the leg.

Police are willing to accept that the two guys who got shot broke in, but they are still investigating.

At 17 and 19 they had their lives ahead of them. Instead of doing something constructive, they turned to crime. In this case, crime didn't pay.

George Clooney on the Rust Movie Shooting

Clooney has a counterpoint to Baldwin's "It's not my fault" mantra. George Clooney calls Alec Baldwin's 'Rust' shooting 'insane'

The “Ocean’s Eleven” star said that despite having “been on sets for 40 years,” he has never heard of some of the apparent safety measures Baldwin’s Western had used on the deadly set.

“First of all, I’ve never heard the term ‘cold gun,'” he said of the doomed safe word that Baldwin believed meant the Colt .45 he fired would not have live bullets.

And Clooney says that even actors are expected to check their own weapons, and not just take someone's word that a gun is not loaded.

The former “ER” star said he was “friends” with Jon-Erik Hexum, who died from a blank in 1984, and “good friends — really good friends — with Brandon Lee,” the 28-year-old son of martial arts legend Bruce Lee who died in a similar on-set shooting while filming “The Crow” in 1993.

“After Brandon died, it really became a very clear thing of, open the gun, look down the barrel, looking in the cylinder, make sure,” he said of industry-wide safety steps that Baldwin appears to have skipped.

Of course given that these were (probably) single action revolvers, you needed a slightly esoteric knowledge of how to check that they were unloaded. Something you could have been shown how to do in under 2 minutes.

Meanwhile Alec's brother Daniel Baldwin says that he couldn't be expected to make his own safety checks.

Mediterranean Sundance

I think I have mentioned that I have been spending at least some of my musical-listening time revisiting the Jazz I listened to back in the dark ages of the late 1970s and 1980s. Some of it is quite good.

Al Di Meola came to my attention because he was - for a while - a member of Return to forever. (Return to Forever consists of Chick Correa, Stanley Clarke, and other musicians over time.)

This song is "Mediterranean Sundance" by Al Di Meola from his 1977 album Elegant Gypsy.

Did People Doubt That Skateboards Could Be Weapons?

Apparently someone said it "was only a skateboard," about a certain incident in Kenosha, and that comment gained some acceptance. Man dies after being hit in head with skateboard during fight in Santa Ana Starbucks - ABC7 Los Angeles

A man was killed after being hit in the head with a skateboard in an act of self-defense during a fight in a Santa Ana Starbucks.

Anyone who didn't think a skateboard would be a good weapon hasn't ever seen one, and they really haven't been paying attention to the Antifa/BLM/whatever "fighters" in Portland, Seattle, and elsewhere. It is a favorite weapon.

A piece of hardwood plywood (something like maple) ½ inch to ¾ inch by 5 or 6 inches by 2 feet or more. Much more if it's a longboard. And it will have some bits of metal screwed to each end. If you get hit with the edge, I would say that could do some damage.

Oh, and in a Self-defense situation, use whatever weapon you have available.

Neighbors Were Shocked

And you should keep control of your dogs. Police say shooting of dog in Spanish Fort neighborhood justified

The dog was barking at and chasing people in the neighborhood. On a Sunday, I'm going to assume that "people" includes some kids.

He called out to the dog to distract it and that's when police say the dog charged at him.

The neighbors?

Some neighbors were taken back by the incident. "You know, people own guns, but you don’t think that it’s going to be discharged in your neighborhood."

Because this kind of thing only happens in "other kinds of places," and not in our suburban enclave. Or something.

As for the cops...

"Under the circumstances, he was legally carrying in a place he had a legal right to and he felt threatened. And if a hundred pound plus dog come charging at you, it can’t be a good thing. Coming at you aggressively, which he said it was, he did what he had to do to protect himself and his family," said [Sgt. Steven] Mooney [of the Spanish Fort Police Department].

Self-defense is a human-right.
