From WKRC in Cincinnati: Video: I-75 police pursuit ends with rollover crash and arrest (No. It is not WKRP)

A driver who Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers tried to stop for speeding was allegedly intoxicated and suspected in a hit-and-run.

So she was drinking and driving. She was fleeing a hit and run. She was speeding, 82 in a 65. She wasn't wearing a seat belt. Allegedly.

All of that, and then she loses control of her vehicle and experiences a multiple rollover crash. Without a seat belt. That part isn't allegedly, because it is all caught on the dashcam. Including the part where she fails to stop for police who are pursuing her.

This video, posted by Local 12, WKRC in Cincinnati, is the dash-cam and body-cam video released by the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Caught on video: Police chase in Ohio ends with rollover crash, arrest.

A couple of police vehicles try to box her in to no avail, before she loses control of the vehicle. The video is about 11 minutes long, the crash, with preliminaries starts at about 5 minutes and 45 seconds in, before that they are trying to box her in, and get her to stop. After the crash they are rendering aid.

I watch a fair few police chases when I'm fighting with insomnia, but not too many close to home. This started in Franklin Township, Butler County, Ohio. It is about half way between Cincinnati and Dayton, which isn't too close to where I live, but not too far either. I haven't often been on that stretch of I-75, because if I'm going to Dayton, it would be out of my way to drive that route, but I believe that she is heading south on I-75, basically driving from Dayton toward Cincinnati.

Arkansas State Police would have executed a PIT maneuver, also known as a tactical vehicle intervention, but Ohio - I believe - has a rule about the maximum speed at which you can do that. There is also a fair amount of traffic on the interstate, and the drivers are NOT doing much to get out the cops' way. The fact that it was 6PM and people were trying to get home from work is really not an excuse. You should be aware of your surroundings, and if you don't stay well away from a police chase, you may end up as part of a crash. That doesn't happen in this case, but it does happen.

Soft on Crime Creates More Victims

On the afternoon of April 1, 2024, a woman ran into a convenience store in the Tampa suburb of Seffner, Florida. Her face was covered in bruises, according to Ashraf Zakhar, the clerk who was working the counter: “She was screaming and crying and said ‘I need help. I need help.’ She just ran to the bathroom and locked herself in.” The clerk called 911 and police showed up. It turned out that the woman had been held captive for more than two months, beaten and terrorized by 48-year-old Walter Medina.

The sad thing is that this isn't the first time Medina had done such a thing, but he wasn't locked up because that would be mean, or something.

The Other McCain includes a link to video of a police chase in Florida, that finally stopped Medina. He describes the chase as "one of the scariest I’ve ever seen."-

Not only were dozens of innocent motorists endangered by Medina’s reckless driving, but the troopers chasing him were also endangered. That alone should be enough for a 10-year prison sentence, beyond and above whatever the sentence is for what Walter Medina did to that poor woman he held captive for more than two months.

When jurists are soft on criminals and don't sentence them to prison for terms that match their crimes, what they are really saying is that the don't give a damn about the next victim. They care more about virtue signalling their "compassion" for the criminal than their duty to public safety. What about compassion for the victims?

Don't Run From the Arkansas State Police

The Other McCain brings us the latest Aspiring Rapper Update

Say hello to Torkilo Hambrick and, while you’re at it, go ahead and say good-bye, because Torkilo probably won’t be back on the streets anytime soon. Torkilo is a career criminal from Memphis who made the mistake of committing serious felonies in Lonoke County, Arkansas — where Donald Trump got 76% of the vote in the last election.

A guy with outstanding warrants decided to run from a traffic stop in Lonoke County, Arkansas. The county line of Lonoke County is about 10 miles east of Little Rock, though Hazen, Arkansas, the town where the chase ended, is about 45 mile drive east of Little Rock.

Torkilo Hambrick, 30, of Memphis was driving a white Dodge Ram pickup truck when he decided that he

1. didn't have to obey the traffic laws in Arkansas, and
2. didn't have to stop for Arkansas State Police (ASP).

He was wrong on both counts.

The Other McCain does a nice job of describing his list of crimes, and offers up some thoughts on what things in Memphis must be like, where "Kamala Harris got 62% of the vote."

You know how they say a career criminal has a record “as long as your arm”? Your arms aren’t long enough for Torkilo Hambrick’s criminal record.

When ASP stopped the truck by way of a Tactical Vehicle Intervention, also known as a precision immobilization technique or PIT, Latarica Walker, 26, and Laterrika Woods, 29, both from Memphis were ejected from the truck. Woods died, and Walker was airlifted to a trauma center. Hambrick and Zuri Jones, 45, were both taken to hospital.

And now Big Boogie’s sister has died because she was riding in a truck full of felonies, driven by a sex offender with tattoos on his face who thought he could outrun the Arkansas State Police.

ASP usually posts their dashcam video to YouTube, but it is a couple of weeks too soon for that, at the very least. The chase took place on March 26th.

This falls under rule 2 of John Farnham's Rules of Stupid:

1. Don't go to stupid places
2. Don't associate with stupid people
3. Don't do stupid things

Getting into a "truck full of felonies" driven by Hambrick was contraindicated. But then in Memphis, I'm sure that the police would have terminated the chase, for safety reasons. ASP doesn't give up, and they will put you in the ditch.

Arkansas Is NOT a Place to Run from Police

The directive to Arkansas State Police, is that if they flee, put them in the ditch.

The district attorneys of the State of Arkansas had a meeting with the Arkansas State Police. They issued a joint statement via YouTube, which said, in part...

We will pursue you, we will stop you, and the men and women standing behind me will prosecute you.

When I am having bouts of insomnia, I watch more than my fair share of police chases. More than a few are from Arkansas, in part because they publish them to YouTube in fairly short order, but also because the (for the most part) include speed, location and other data in the video. And because ASP doesn't F- around. If you run from ASP, you will end up in the ditch, 999 times out of 1000. No, they aren't perfect.

Despite this, the number of people who try to run from police is growing. One of the people in the video mentions the stats for one police district.

The moral of the story is, don't run from Arkansas State Police, and if you're ever driving through Arkansas keep an eye on the rear view mirror, because you never know what will be coming up behind you. (If the pursuit does come up behind you, merge to the right.)

I Guess He Thought He Could Just Walk Away After a Police Chase

Insomnia means lots of YouTube videos, and that always means at least a few police chases.

A guy who was not a cop, had flashing lights in his car. When a real cop tried to stop him, he initially stopped, but then he ran. He ran from the Arkansas State Police, which is never a good idea, and rarely ends well.

The Police Pursuits video 🐶K9 Deployed! After 100 MPH PIT Maneuver, GOOD BOY takes a bite out of crime #police #canine #k9 is embedded below. From the description we get the following from after the Tactical Vehicle Intervention.

Blaine repeatedly failed to comply with orders and eventually, Officer Darrell Prewitt with the Marion Police Department deployed his K-9. Blaine was then taken into custody. Upon a search of the suspect's vehicle, a firearm, a handheld radio, a tactical belt consistent with what is commonly used by law enforcement, and the above-mentioned flashing lights were discovered. Blaine was transported to Crittenden Baptist Hospital by West Memphis Fire and Rescue for the injuries he obtained from the K-9 deployment.

When he was not complying, he was casually walking away from the scene, before the K-9 was let loose to play with his new chew toy.

Note that the PIT/TVI "disabled" the vehicle he was driving.

After the K-9 subdued the guy, and he was taken into custody, he apparently said that he respects the police "highly," or some such nonsense. One cop took offense at that statement.

There is no great lesson to be learned, or insight to gleaned from this encounter; it is just 8 minutes of entertainment with a happy ending. No one was killed. (The ASP does not mess around, and bad things sometimes happen to bad guys.) The (alleged) bad guy was arrested, and a K-9 got to play with a chew toy for a bit. Alleged, though there is a whole bunch of video evidence of what happened. About 8 minutes.

Don't Drink And Drive

Which was apparently why he tried to run. Mayfair Road police chase, crash; man arrested for OWI. Operating While Intoxicated.

He could have stayed sober, and had a drink (or whatever he had) when at home later. He could have called Uber.

Officers first tried to stop the driver after his car was driving recklessly through the Mayfair Mall parking lot. The driver then pulled out onto Mayfair Road and fled south, weaving in and out of rush hour traffic before causing a four-vehicle crash at Watertown Plank Road.

I assume that is felony resisting on top of everything else. And he crashed his car. Does insurance cover this kind of thing? I doubt it. Sadly felony stupidity is not something he can be charged with.

I did a quick bit of searching on the subject: OWI in Wisconsin.

The average cost of an OWI in Wisconsin is $5,000. This includes the cost of the fine, the cost of the lawyer, and the cost of the court fees.

Motorists convicted of an OWI in Wisconsin will also have to pay for a mandatory alcohol assessment, costing up to $200. They may also be required to complete a driver's education course, costing up to $500. If their blood alcohol content (BAC) was above 0.15%, they might be required to install an ignition interlock device which can cost up to $1,000. In addition, offending motorists may also be required to attend a victim impact panel, costing up to $100. They will also have to pay a reinstatement fee of $200 when they get their license back.

My guess is that the price he will pay for OWI on top of everything else he did, which was all stupid, will dwarf that amount.

130 MPH PIT Maneuver

OK, I admit it. These posts serve no real purpose except to highlight how much I love to watch Arkansas State Police in action. ASP does not fool around. Try to run from them at your own peril.

Well, they do highlight how people never, and I mean NEVER, are aware of what if coming up behind them when they are driving on interstate highways.

The Stupid, It Hurts, and It Probably Costs a Lot Too

If your car/vehicle is totaled, or even just damaged, while you are breaking the law/evading police, will insurance cover that? Somehow I don't think so.

Why do people trade in a simple, if expensive, speeding ticket for felony reckless driving, felony evasion, and losing, or at least severely damaging their vehicle? Maybe this guy had outstanding warrants. Maybe he thought he could outrun the Arkansas State Police. Maybe he is just stupid.

Arkansas State Police Pursuit

If you're a cop, running with lights and sirens, and other cops also running with lights and sirens are getting out of your way, what does that say?

ASP doesn't give up the fight. I watch a fair amount of police chase videos. It's the kind of thing you do when you have insomnia for days on end. There are any number of jurisdictions that won't execute a PIT maneuver above 45 MPH. ASP doesn't have that policy. In the video below, the PIT took place somewhere around 80 MPH.

I have searched for a news article relating to this incident, but either it was completely ignored, or my Google-fu is getting weak in my old age.

On December 18, 2021, around 5 a.m., police responded to West Park Drive in Vineland, New Jersey, for a report of a man who was erratically operating a construction backhoe.

The authorities released 14 videos, which is why I think that Donut Operator is the better bet... He goes through everything, and provides a link to the video as released by the Attorney General. There is bodycam video, cellphone video recorded by people in the area, and security video. All that video includes things like smashed cop cars, cars getting rolled over, and more.

Florida police will chase you if you run. This guy ran, but he didn't get away.

Criminals don’t obey traffic laws the same way they don’t obey drug laws or gun laws or just about any other law you’d care to name. What’s the point of having any laws at all, if you think it’s social injustice to put criminals in jail? Because that’s what really inspires the notion that we shouldn’t be locking up drug dealers, i.e., the “disparate impact” argument.

You Probably Shouldn't Point a Gun at a SWAT Team

It is a good way to get killed. Bodycam video released of deadly police chase across Houston.

It started a few days before, when the suspect/dead-guy fired into a police station. Then on November 11th, police found him, and a car chase ensued. At one point he was a few blocks from where a Veterans' Day parade was taking place.

It ended in a shopping mall.

HPD Swat members made a plan to block Elliot in at the shopping plaza off the North Sam Houston Parkway, telling customers to clear the area. [SNIP]

The officers were able to successfully block Elliot in before he got out of his car holding a rifle.

This is where the chaos really set in. Even though SWAT was handling the stop, patrol officers kept arriving and getting involved. At least one officer and one bystander were injured by bullet fragments from the crossfire.

It is much clearer when you see the video.

The Only Thing Missing Is a Gator Attack

Florida Man tries to swim away from police. Wanted man arrested after jumping into Intracoastal Waterway in Volusia

Volusia County, Florida is northeast of Orlando, and includes Deltona and Daytona Beach.

The guy in question had federal warrants, so Daytona Beach police were following him, when he decided to flee. He rammed into several vehicles. He tried to swim away.

During the chase, Sotelo drove to a mobile home park at 2351 S. Ridgewood Ave., exited his vehicle and jumped into a river, authorities said.

According to deputies, Sotelo swam for about 15 to 20 minutes before surrendering and climbing into a U.S. Coast Guard boat.

This article says "river" but other articles reference the Intercoastal Waterway. I'm not familiar with that part of the IC, but over by Tampa I have seen both gators and sharks in the Intercoastal. Neither of those showed up to convince him of the error of his ways.

"Well, that car just sunk"

When people run from police, it usually doesn't end well. PIT manuvers. Car crashes. All maner of catastrophe. But they aren't usually this funny. I'll start with the news story, (well, schadenfreude is maybe not quite funny) because it has one pertinent detail. Dashcam video shows car rolling into lake after Forsyth deputies chase fleeing driver.

The car had to be towed out of the lake, and deputies learned it didn't belong to the occupants but was borrowed from a friend.

So if you lend your car to a bone-headed friend, and in the course of a police chase it gets sunk in a lake, will your insurance cover that, or are you SOL?

The driver jumped out of the car, but didn't bother to put it in park, or turn off the ignition.

Police caught the driver and one passenger, though others did manage to elude police.

The 18-year-old driver is charged with DUI drugs, obstruction, fleeing/attempting to elude, speeding, reckless driving, and failure to report striking a fixed object.

The moral of the story seems to be, "Never underestimate the power of human stupidity."

I'm tempted to have it skip to the end, but you can do that yourself. The whole video is only 4 minutes long anyway.

What were you doing at 14 years old? I'm guessing it wasn't stealing cars.

The embedded video below includes (at least part) of the news story linked above. The interview with community activist Tracey Dent is interesting. He makes some valid points about law and order.

Community activist Tracey Dent says action is needed now, adding people are dying as a result of reckless driving. He says the teens just don't understand how dangerous it can be. "This is serious. This is not a game. This is not a game. People are afraid to drive in the city of Milwaukee. It's chaos here."

Dent says fines are small, the teens are rarely punished and they're often released within hours. He's created a citizen petition to show the city and court system there is a groundswell of support for increasing penalties for reckless driving. "We're giving these criminals a pass, saying it's okay to go do what you do because we don't want you to go to jail. We don't want you to get more fines. So they take that and run with it and abuse it."

Atlanta Rapper versus Police

Any guesses as to how this story ends? Dash cam video shows intense moment police take Atlanta-area rapper into custody after chase

An armed rapper, whose online presence includes video of him flashing cash, and he was driving a sports car.

Durr got out of the car on the highway, they said. In the video, it appears something is tossed in the air. Police said Durr fought with officers as they tried to take him into custody.

The audio isn't great, but I think he asks "What did I do?" as officers tackle him. That was after he ran from police and crashed into two vehicles. And he had a gun in his possession. The crash also injured two officers, though not seriously. And he was originally wanted in connection to an aggravated assault. So that's what he did.
