An argument at a fast food restaurant ended in gunfire after a carload of people followed one of the customers home and opened fire, leaving two of them shot by the man they had chased, Abbeville Police say.

Abbeville, Louisiana, is roughly a 25 mile drive southwest of Lafayette, or about a 150 mile drive west of New Orleans.

Cops found the car, and had two people taken to the hospital.

No charges have been filed at the time the article was written, but it was early in the investigation.

Before officers arrived, her son showed up and fired several warning shots into the ground out of fear for their safety.

This is not allowed in most places, and not allowed in Louisiana.

Authorities later located and arrested several of the students, who are now facing criminal mischief charges. The man who fired the weapon was also cited for illegal discharge of a firearm.

Don't be stupid. Everyone is stupid in this incident. The high school students I can almost understand, as it is sort of the business of high school students to be stupid, but with all of the coverage of Ding-Dong-Ditch recently, you would think someone would realize that acting like a threat is bad.

And just don't do warning shots. Or at least know where they are and are not legal. They are mostly not legal.

Kenner, Louisiana is in Jefferson Parrish, about 10 miles west of downtown New Orleans.

Police in New Iberia responded to a shooting at 11:30 in the morning. Perhaps the would-be bad guy thought no one would be at home. The homeowner shot the intruder.

[Capt. Leland Laseter with NIPD] said the victim was taken to a hospital in Lafayette for treatment.

He added at this point in the investigation, it appears the person was shot in self-defense.

New Iberia, Louisiana is about a 20 mile drive southeast of Lafayette, or about 45 miles southwest of Baton Rouge.

The guy who got shot was listed in critical condition.

Since this took place in Louisiana, and not in New York, the finding of self-defense has meaning.

Good Guys 1, Bad Guys 0.

What If Cops Don't Believe Your Legal Gun Is Legal?

This is not a shock, given that New Roads Police Department seems to have a bunch of problems. I-TEAM: Man jailed for 20 hours on stolen gun charges; gun was legal

The cops pulled over Maddox Livingston for a burnt-out headlamp, and a non-working plate lamp. He informed them that he had a firearm in the vehicle, in accordance with Louisiana law, so they disarmed him, and somehow determined that the gun was stolen. A neat trick, because the gun was not stolen.

An 18-year-old man spent 20 hours in jail this week after his attorney says New Roads police wrongfully arrested him on felony charges for allegedly possessing a stolen gun that was not stolen.

Eventually, his lawyer and his family provided documentation to prove the gun was not stolen, and the DA ordered his release. He is obviously concerned that the arrest will stay on his record.

Attorney Rob Marionneaux, who is representing Livingston, said the incident highlights ongoing problems with the New Roads Police Department.

“If I were the mayor and I were on the city council, I would abolish it,” Marionneaux said.

In five months, Marionneaux has represented two clients who claim they were wronged by the department’s officers.

Incompetence or corruption? Hard to say which is worse.

The officer involved, has since been arrested on a drug charge. New Roads police officer arrested on drug distribution charges. That makes me lean toward corruption over incompetence, but maybe he is just a stoner, and makes mistakes.

On Wednesday, deputies said that the shooter shot at a person who had poured gasoline on the house floor and was trying to set it on fire with someone inside.

"The shot was fired in an attempt to stop that from happening," [Livingston Parish] Sheriff Jason Ard said.

Livingston Parish, Louisiana is about 10 miles east of Baton Rouge, and generally northwest of New Orleans

When they get out of the hospital, the guy who got shot will face charges.

Investigators said a person entered the store armed with a “cutting instrument,” walked around the counter and attempted to rob the store clerk. A struggle ensued and the robbery suspect was shot by the store clerk, authorities said.

WGNO calls the guy who got shot a "Shooting Victim." Not a victim. Still a criminal. The store clerk was the victim of an attempted armed robbery.

[The would-be, bad guy] was taken to a local hospital and later airlifted to a hospital in Lafayette, where he remains listed in critical condition.

Self-defense is a human right, and it seems to be your legal right in Alabama.

First He Got Shot, Then He Was Arrested

Shreveport police are investigating a case that involves attempted car thefts and a shooting in early April.

The 911 call stated that people were breaking into cars, and actually stealing one of them. The would-be bad guys noticed the 911 caller and approached him.

The homeowner fired two shots at the suspects, striking 18-year-old Jamelvion Lewis in the upper body.

While responding officers rendered aid to Lewis, they found a firearm, which was seized and later confirmed to have been reportedly stolen out of Bossier City after a check with the National Crime Information Center (NCIC).

The 2nd guy ran like a rabbit and has not been arrested.

The guy who got shot was in hospital for a while, but has since been transferred to the local lockup.

Detectives now believe that this guy, Lewis, plus one other person are behind at least five vehicle burglaries, one firearm theft, and one or more motor vehicle thefts, and a handful of burglaries. Does this count as a crime spree stopped by a legal gun owner?

The person who shot Lewis has not been charged, because Louisiana has not morphed into Massachusetts. Self-defense is a human right.

Don't "Approach" a Homeowner

A homeowner was outside having a smoke, when he saw two people breaking into cars. He called 911.

The homeowner called 911 to report the incident. While on the phone with 911, one of the alleged burglars began to approach him. The homeowner told the individual to stop, but the man reportedly kept approaching him.

The homeowner reportedly shot the man in the lower abdomen and the right arm.

The guy who got shot has "life threatening" injuries.

this all took place in Shreveport, Louisiana.

No other info was available, but there are two things to note. Self-defense is a human-right. Louisiana has not morphed into New Jersey.

One Case of Self-Defense, One Case of Felony Stupidity

Tyrone Mercadel decided he was going to break into a home in Louisiana.

He allegedly hit a woman, who owns the home and she managed to get a gun and shoot Mercadel in the leg.

So far, so good, as far as self-defense goes, but after he got shot, Tyrone Mercadel decided that he was going to leave.

Wayne Mercadal, the other homeowner, shot at the suspect's vehicle as he tried to get away. He was arrested and booked into the St. Tammany Parish Correctional Center for aggravated criminal damage to property.

And I think he will be lucky to not be charged with something like assault with a deadly weapon, but that is just a guess on my part.

Tyrone Mercadel was also arrested, on a charge of aggravated burglary.

Slidell, Louisiana is about a 30 mile drive north from New Orleans. It is located on the northern shore of Lake Pontchartrain.

Again. You can't just shoot at people you believe to be bad guys. And you can't shoot at them if they are actively trying to get away. That is the direct opposite of the threat.

I don't think the 2 last names are a coincidence, but police did not say anything about the people being related.

Maybe it was just Casey Meaux's way of celebrating Halloween.

One victim was stabbed at each house. The sheriff’s office said that Meaux was shot in the chest by the homeowner of the second house during the alleged invasion.

Iberia Parish, Louisiana is about 10 miles south of Lafayette, or about 85 miles due west of New Orleans. It is home to the famous Tabasco factory of hot sauce fame. (See the map below.)

The victims and Meaux were taken to area hospitals for treatment.

The bad guy was arrested at the hospital.

Casey Meaux is facing two counts of home invasion and two counts of attempted first-degree murder, according to the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office. A mugshot was not available of Meaux on Friday due to him being in hospital care, the sheriff’s office said.

There is no word on what started Casey Meaux on his violent escapade. Maybe we can just chalk it up to "Crazy people are dangerous."

I'm Shocked to Discover that Criminals Don't Obey the Law

Through an investigation, Bossier City violent crimes unit detectives discovered there was a verbal dispute between the victim and the suspect, later identified Lamont Heyward, 47. After the argument, Heyward shot the victim, who then returned gunfire in self-defense and shot Heyward in the foot.

The victim was shot in the pelvic area, and is being treated for non-life-threatening wounds.

Bossier City, Louisiana is a either a suburb of Shreveport, or the eastern half, or third, of the city. Located in the northwestern corner of the state, it is separated from Shreveport by the Red River.

After a warrant was filed on charges of attempted 2nd degree murder and felon in possession of a firearm, [Heyward] was found and arrested. Heyward is being held on $425,000 bond in Bossier City Jail.

So he has a criminal record, which bars him from having a firearm. And yet he had a firearm, which he used to commit (allegedly) another felony. Maybe the powers that be should pass a bunch more laws to curb gun violence that the criminals will ignore.

But then if they were serious about stopping crime, this guy wouldn't be eligible for bail, and he would face a speedy trial. (And for the record, I'm not shocked that criminals break the law; it's what they do.)

One Dead, Two Arrested, One on the Run

The caller [to 911] said they saw someone trying to break into a parked vehicle in an apartment complex. Police then got a second call reporting several gunshots fired near "1640 Town Center Parkway (The Masons Apartment Complex), possibly coming from a black SUV".

Detectives believe the four suspects tried to steal a Chevrolet Camaro from the apartment parking lot. The owner heard the car's alarm go off and confronted them. That's when an exchange of shots was fired between the car owner and the suspects.

Slidell, Louisiana is about 20 miles northeast of New Orleans, on the shore of Lake Pontchartrain.

The 4 "teenagers" were in the apartment complex specifically to steal cars. Because "Thou Shalt Not Steal" is such a quaint concept.

If a Homeowner with a Gun Asks You to Leave...

When deputies arrived, the homeowners said they saw Smith near their garage and when one of the homeowners confronted him " Smith charged and attacked the homeowner", the release said.

The first homeowner who was attacked fought with Smith and yelled for the second homeowner's help who came outside and begged for Smith to stop., according to the sheriff's office.

When Smith refused to let go of the first homeowner, the second homeowner went inside and "armed himself with a firearm", asking Smith to stop again.

He didn't stop the attack. He attacked the homeowner with the gun, and he got shot.

Mandeville, Louisiana is on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain, about 25 north of New Orleans.

The cops in St. Tammany Parish are treating this like a case of justified self-defense.

The guy who got shot was taken to a local hospital.

Smith is charged with Criminal Trespassing, Attempted Simple Kidnapping, Simple Battery, and Simple Assault. Upon release from the hospital, he will be booked into the St. Tammany Parish Correctional Facility.

I'm guessing that is not how he saw his day turning out.

Journalistic Euphemisms, the Homeless, and Self Defense

He is so lucky that he was shot with a pellet gun, and not a 9mm or .45 ACP.

On May 10 just before 10 a.m., the Shreveport Police Department responded to a reported shooting in the 2500 block of Hersey D. Wilson Drive between Legardy and Stanley streets in the Martin Luther King neighborhood.

He threw a beer bottle at the homeowner, because of course he did, when he was asked to leave.

The homeowner then shot the unhoused person in the chest with a pellet gun, police say. Officials go on to say the homeowner feared for his life and acted out of self-defense.

Proving once again that the State of Louisiana has not morphed into a copy of Manhattan.

The guy was shot with a pellet gun, not a firearm. And not a hunting-capable air rifle. Yes, they exist, and I want one (not the only one), but whenever I have that much disposable income, I usually opt of something else. Anyway this guy will survive. No mention of charges.

Self Defense is a Human Right, and in Louisiana it seems to be your legal right. Also, if an armed homeowner invites you to leave, you should probably leave.

Constitutional Carry in Louisiana

Louisiana becomes the 28th state to allow concealed carry without a permit. Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry signs constitutional carry.

Louisiana has had open carry, but the Left is still bent about concealed carry.

At the bill signing Governor Landry said, "“Today, we join 27 other states in passing Constitutional Carry. I promised the folks of Louisiana that I would champion Constitutional Carry into law, and within two months, I have honored that commitment. It's fundamentally clear—law-abiding citizens should never have to seek government permission to safeguard themselves and their families. Today, we have secured an incredible victory for liberty in Louisiana."

There will be fights to restrict where weapons can be carried. Those fights are already undeway.

Home invaders are getting shot. Homeowner shoots home invasion suspect in Houma, police say

Houma, Louisiana is about an hour's drive southwest of New Orleans.

Chief Theriot says the homeowner told responding officers that he shot an alleged intruder in his home. He reportedly heard a noise coming from the first floor of his home and as he went down the stairs to investigate, he was confronted by the suspect and shot. The suspect fled.

He was shot in the forehead, but medical personnel determined that the wound was superficial, and after treatment he was turned back over to the cops.

He is lucky he wasn't killed.

[The guy who got shot] was booked into jail on one count of simple burglary and on an outstanding warrant for violating parole.

A woman suspected of helping him in the break in was also arrested.

Self-defense is a human-right, and in Louisiana it appears to be your legal right as well. Good Guys 2, Bad Guys 0.

Louisiana Has a Shortage of Police

Nationwide stats are available on retiring and resigning police.

Officer resignations were up 47% in 2022, compared with 2019,the year before the pandemic and Floyd’s murder, according to a survey of nearly 200 police agencies by the Police Executive Research Forum, a Washington, DC.-based think tank. Retirements are up 19%.

Apparently it isn't just the large cities that are having trouble with staffing.

Agencies around the U.S. have experienced police shortages in recent years that many in law enforcement blame on a morale hit stemming from the coronavirus pandemic and criticism of police that boiled over with the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Small towns, including in Maine, Texas and Ohio, have disbanded their police departments, turning over law enforcement work to county sheriffs, a neighboring town or state police.

So what happens when you don't have police to enforce the rule of law? Or when you convince them NOT to enforce the rule of law? All you have to do is look at Chicago, Philadelphia, New Orleans, Los Angeles, etc. to find out. You fail to get the rule of law.

This is where I always mention Hobbes' Leviathan, because the idea that you MUST enforce the rule of law is not new. Hobbes published Leviathan in 1651. In that book he describes the State of War that ensues when law and order break down. I think "war zone" pretty accurately describes what is happening in our cities.

So what will you do when you call 911, and no one comes to save you?

People You Know Can Be a Threat

The gun-hating part of the Left loves to go on, at length, about how it is more likely that you will shoot someone you know than that you will shoot a perfect stranger. There is a reason for that. Home invasion leads to shooting on Boulevard Street

Officials say the homeowner shot the intruder. They sustained a non-life-threatening injury to the leg and were taken to an area hospital. SPD says the resident and the intruder knew each other.

You are more likely to come into conflict with someone you know. The fact that you know them, doesn't make them a friend, or "safe." They may be the crazy neighbor, or the creepy guy from your favorite coffee shop, or a coworker who is morphing into a stalker. Just because you know them, doesn't mean that they are harmless.
