Lockdown Orders During COVID Cost Lives

They are only counting lives lost to missed/delayed medical treatment, and they are only studying the UK, but at least they are admitting to something. From The Times (of London). Stay at home advice during Covid cost lives, inquiry concludes

The refrain was, "trust the science." There was no science involved.

The message was drawn up by the Cabinet Office in Boris Johnson’s government, without any input from health leaders, the report said.

Say that again. No input from the health care community. Just a bunch of political hacks doing political hack stuff. Just people trying to increase their power.

Here is one example: People were told to stay, so people suffering medical emergencies did.

It meant patients suffering heart attacks did not go to A&E because they did not want to “burden” the NHS, which led to a rise in deaths from heart attacks.

Then there was the cruelty.

Restrictions on visitors meant many died in hospital alone and their families could not visit them on their deathbeds. Hallett recommended that in future pandemics, limits on visitors should be “the least restrictive possible”.

Free Health Care Is Not Always Good

Because people who are drugged out of their minds don't cause problems.

“Inappropriate use of antipsychotics can carry serious risks, including adverse reactions, cognitive decline, falls and even death,” the report cautioned.

And if you don't want to be drugged, Canada's doctors now kill more people than Canada's guns.

Euthanasia as Practiced in Canada Is Horrifying

Canada's so-called Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) program isn't just failing vulnerable people -- it's actively betraying them. Time and again, it delivers fresh, horrifying proof that euthanasia is not compassion, but a moral nightmare dressed as mercy. Yet far too many still look away. Why?

Because it is far away, and they haven't come for you. Yet.

Then there is the case of Kiano Vafaeian. He was 26, blind in one eye and depressed. His family only learned of his application for MaiD after he was dead. He applied a couple of times, but his family saved his life twice. This time they were not able to intervene.

But MAiD's 2022 expansion to non-terminal chronic conditions reopened the door. Approved again and scheduled to be euthanized that September in Toronto, his mother once more successfully rallied support through petitions and media, even prompting her son's doctor to withdraw. Years passed. Then, in late 2025, Vafaeian was approved yet again, this time in Vancouver by Dr. Ellen Wiebe, who has carried out over 400 executions by euthanasia. This final green light exploited a loophole, framing his torment as primarily physical (diabetes-related blindness) despite depression's undeniable dominance. The young man, not even 30 years old, was euthanized on December 30, 2025.

And then there is the case of Canadian actress Claire Brosseau. She is 48 and depressed, but wants to die, and is suing for that right. She has manic depression, anxiety, substance abuse, but no chronic physical ailments. Not being offed by the medical profession violates her right to die. Or something.

It is certainly cheaper to kill people, than to care for them, but is that what civilized people do? Don't get me wrong. I have said that if I was suffering from acute radiation poisoning, I would not stick around for the mechanics of dying. If you knew what that kind of death involved, you probably wouldn't either. There are other ends I wouldn't want. Certain kinds of stage 4 cancer come to mind.

If there is pain, that I can understand. But killing people, medically, because they are depressed seems wrong to me. It speaks to the nihilistic nature of modern life.

An elderly woman was euthanized within hours of her husband claiming she changed her mind after insisting she wanted to live.

She needed in patient care, but that is hella expensive, and so was denied.

Ontario MAiD Death Review Committee members raised concerns about how Mrs B's case was handled, in the report released by the Office of the Chief Coroner.

Many members 'believed the short timeline did not allow all aspects of Mrs B's social and end-of-life circumstances and care needs to be explored'.

These included 'the impact of being denied hospice care, additional care options, caregiver burden, consistency of the MAiD request, and divergent MAiD practitioner perspectives'.

UK Government Refuses to Release Data on Excess Deaths

Because nothing says "trust us about the science" like hiding the data the science is based on. Government ‘withholding data that may link Covid jab to excess deaths’

The public health watchdog has been accused of a “cover-up” after refusing to publish data that could link the Covid vaccine to excess deaths.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) argued that releasing the data would lead to the “distress” of bereaved relatives if a link were to be discovered.

They also said that the public was too stupid to understand the data anyway. Almost.

“You have to ask yourself why it is that the public are considered incapable of handling this data. It reveals a patronising mindset, which also characterised the pandemic response – ‘do what we say, don’t ask any questions, we know what is best for you’.”

It is begining to look like they know what the data will show - they did release all of the data to Big Pharma - and they don't want the truth to come to light.

Health Care Bureaucrats Not Focused on Health Care

They are supposed to be providing health care. Instead we get this. From The Telegraph: NHS’s ‘insane’ £1.4bn push for net zero

It would be one thing the the UK's National Health Service was a well oiled machine. It is not.

Gareth Lyon, head of health and social care at the think tank, Policy Exchange, questioned the priorities when “the NHS faces plummeting public satisfaction rates and sky-high waiting lists”.

It would even be a little better if their £1.4 billion expenditure on stuff like electric ambulances actually cut their carbon footprint. It didn't.

But despite these efforts, the total carbon emissions from the health service are the same as they were five years ago when the “Greener NHS” project was launched.

And those electric ambulances? They could go 70 miles on a charge, which took 4 hours. 70 miles might work in London, but it would not work even in rural parts of England.

The UK's Hospital of Horrors

This article is a list of all things that authorities know. I don't know if the investigation is still going on or not.

Patients were drugged. At least one patient was raped, and died as a result of her injuries. Hospital staff took drugs for their personal use. This didn't happen in a day. It happened over years.

As for the response, "Leadership" has changed at the hospital, and they are cooperating with the investigation, which implies that it is ongoing.

"Free Health Care" - You Get What You Pay For

This is a tragedy if ever I read about one. Family pushes for inquest into Ontario teen’s death following eight-hour wait to see doctor in ER

Finlay van der Werken was 16 years old. His family brought him to the emergency room at about 9 PM, and he was triaged at 10 PM. He didn't see a doctor until after 6 AM.

“He was triaged as a Level Two on the Canadian triage acuity scale,” said the family’s lawyer, Meghan Walker. “The guidelines say that a patient who is a Level Two, which is the second highest, should be seen by a physician within 15 minutes.”

Instead of 15 minutes, he waited 8 hours. Finlay van der Werken died 27 hours after he’d first arrived at the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital emergency room.

The medical group that runs the hospital has deepest condolences for the family, but have not explained what went wrong. How did 15 minutes get to be 8 hours? Was there no doctor on call?

The parents are trying to make sure that this kind of thing doesn't happen to another family.

Good luck to them, but "You can't fight City Hall" is an old saying. At least in Chicago. And no one at the hospital seems to be in line to be held accountable. Health care in Canada is a government bureaucracy, how can you hold that accountable? So your health care is free. Is it any good?

The United Kingdom has the super-version of Socialized Medicine that the Left loves, Single Payer. The government pays for all of your health care. The result? You can't get health care.

Or you can't get health care when you need it. Wait times are legendary, so people are turning to private health care. Lord Kinnock’s £2bn VAT raid would crush the NHS

Many people are indeed turning to private healthcare, Lord Kinnock is right about that. He also correctly identifies the reason behind this being the long waiting lists, which have now become a permanent feature of the NHS. [SNIP]

It was reported last year that almost half of 18- to 24-year-olds are opting to pay for a GP appointment in order to beat the waiting list on the NHS, with the total number of people going private to see a GP approaching four million.

You don't have to pay for health care. Well, that is the Left's advertising. You do pay through taxes. And the largest bureaucracy in the country doles out the funds. The result is that you can't get health care. Not free health care anyway. So you end up paying twice.

Speaking of wait times. Accident & Emergency wards, what we call Emergency Rooms on this side of the pond, have legendary wait times. People don't respond well to waiting. Nurses are fed up and considering an "industrial action." That would be a strike. Nurses in England's NHS take step closer to industrial action over pay. Low pay is an issue.

As many as 500,000 National Health Service nurses in England, Wales and Northern Ireland were on track to join resident doctors in taking industrial action over pay after voting to reject a 3.6% rise offered by the government.

The nurses rejected the offer "overwhelmingly" in a union ballot because it was below, not only that offered to their colleagues in Scotland and resident doctors and consultants, but also other public sector workers such as teachers, prison officers and the military, according to the BBC and The Telegraph.

You want that bureaucracy to spend money on front-line workers? You haven't had much experience with the bureaucratic mentality, have you.

There are more problems.

• Scotland getting fed up with their version of NHS, where misdiagnosis is becoming a problem due to doctors being rushed. One in three Scottish residents believe the NHS is not sufficient
• Allegations of corruption, or incompetence. NHS kept using firm behind £6m corruption scandal for three years
• Severe under-staffing leads to death. NHS official admits ‘what we did wasn’t enough’ for 14-year-old who died at mental health hospital

In short, the National Health Service of the United Kingdom is not the wonderful vision of a "cost free" health care system that the Left loves to paint is as being. It is a large bureaucracy creating red tape and delay. If you happen to die because of that delay, well it isn't clear to me that isn't a feature.

Universal Health Care or Universal Suffering?

In British Columbia, politicians love to talk about “universal health care.” But what they don’t talk about is universal suffering—because in the Interior Health region alone, 1,586 patients died last year while waiting for medical imaging or elective surgery. Not while being treated. Not in recovery. They died waiting for the help that never came.

In the world of Socialized Medicine, like Canadian Health Care, "elective surgery" is not only stuff like a tummy tuck or a nose job; it is any surgery that is not mandated by a life or death emergency. You need a hip replacement because you're in pain and can't walk? That is elective surgery, and you are going to have to wait. Cataracts making you blind? Ditto. The list is quite long.

Bureaucracies Protect Their Own

People on the outside can pound sand. The New York Times doesn't understand that. A French Pedophile Doctor Abused Hundreds in His Care. Why Wasn’t He Stopped?

Years before Joël Le Scouarnec was charged with abusing 299 former patients, he was convicted of downloading child sexual abuse imagery.

You would think that would be a red flag in hiring a pediatric surgeon. The French establishment didn't see it that way.

Of course the French courts didn't follow the law, and so the warning signs were covered up, or at least not sent to the people they should have been sent to.

But there was one clear warning sign: his 2005 conviction after an international F.B.I. investigation that snared thousands who had viewed child sexual abuse imagery. A French court at the time gave him a four-month suspended sentence, but demanded no psychological treatment, as it had for others. Nor did it restrict his medical practice. And the court failed to notify Dr. Le Scouarnec’s medical clinic, despite a law requiring it to do so.

And so even people who knew about the conviction hired him.

He was hired by a hospital director in the town of Jonzac, Michèle Cals, who told the court that the only person who informed her of the conviction was Mr. Le Scouarnec himself. But he arrived with a glowing recommendation from his last hospital, and the health ministry had approved his hiring.

“So what else did you expect me to do? Nothing?” said Ms. Cals, who retired a year after hiring him. “At the time, there were few applications and many vacancies, everyone was looking for surgeons. If he hadn’t been hired in Jonzac, he would have been hired anywhere else.”

There is more. Victim statements. Deflections from more bureaucrats. Another conviction that did NOT result in a suspended sentence.

The New York Times is confused because they believe that Europe is perfect. They pay no attention to the riots on the outskirts of Paris that are so regular, they don't count as news. They pay no attention to the increasing crime, and other problems. They love social programs and gun control, and are blind to everything else.

I can hardly wait until all of our health care is controlled by a giant, unfeeling bureaucracy.

UK Medical Negligence Liabilities Second Only to Nuclear Decommissioning

What happens when you put health care into the hands of the same bureaucrats who run the Department of Motor Vehicles? OK, so it isn't the same bureaucrats, but the same type of bureaucrat. The short answer is, "Nothing good."

The Commons public accounts committee (PAC) said the “jaw-dropping” sums being paid to victims of botched treatment and government inaction to reduce errors were “unacceptable”.

That £58.2 billion is to settle "lawsuits arising from clinical negligence," what we call Malpractice on this side of the pond.

The sum is so huge that it is the second-largest liability across the whole of government, with only nuclear decommissioning costlier, the committee said in a damning report.

There are a lot of details in the article, like cost overruns on an infectious disease lab, and more on the harms to patients.

What Happens When Health Care is a Government Budget Item?

People in favor of Socialized Medicine love to hold up the United Kingdom's National Health Service (NHS) as an example of how good things are. The only problem is that they haven't looked at it in a couple of decades.

The NHS is currently facing some budget problems. They got an extra £11 billion, but that mostly went to raises for a class of doctor that hadn't seen a raise in a very long time. And even with that, they have issues.

It comes as Sir Jim yesterday also slammed the 'unacceptable' care patients have received from the NHS—particularly for the elderly—which has become 'normalised'.

When socialized medicine doesn't want to admit to rationing health care, they just report on waiting times. Waiting in hospital emergency rooms. Waiting to see a specialist. Waiting to have surgery.

86% of NHS trusts are also cutting HR, Communication, and the like, though they don't say how much, or how big that expenditure is. It's a bureaucracy, so I expect it to be large.

All the constituencies are clamoring "save our jobs!" But no one is asking for the market to be put back in charge of allocating resources.

And they don't say it in the article, but in previous go rounds on the problems of the NHS, no one in England wants to be a doctor, and work for the largest bureaucracy in the country. And endure years of low pay. The doctors who got the raise mentioned above were the resident doctors, the people working too long at Accident & Emergency wards, what we call Emergency Rooms on this side of the pond, and other places.

At least they haven't gone to Canada's solution, which is to just kill the expensive patients.

The US has similar problems, because we also don't let the market dictate the terms of pay and staffing. Medicaid and Medicare only pay a certain amount for certain things. That value is set without regard to what it actually costs to supply the care, whether that be an ambulance ride, or whatever. But I have never seen a case, where letting a bureaucracy dictate to the market solves the problem. Whatever problem you have, more government is not the solution.

Canada's War on the Disabled

Another instance of the Canadian "publicly funded" health care system leaving someone in such bad shape, that in the end he chose death over suffering. Medical Assistance in Dying isn't always compassion. It is too often a way to deal with inconvenient and/or expensive patients.

There's a name you need to know: Normand Meunier.

He was 66 years old. A quadriplegic. And he didn't die from his disability or a terminal illness — he died because the Canadian health care system abandoned him.

Literally abandoned him, to lay on a gurney in an ER room for 4 days, where he developed horrendous bed sores. In the end, because they weren't helping him recover from that, he selected to end his life via Medical Aid in Dying. In Canada that is not-so-slowly turning into the way the bureaucrats get rid of expensive patients.

Death Is Big Business for Doctors

The Netherlands have had assisted suicide longer than most countries, but I guess the Canadians are in a hurry to catch up.

Speaking of Canada, 7.3% of all people who died in Quebec died due to euthanasia.

Quebec has apparently "adopted the practice more enthusiastically than virtually any other human society."

And I'm sure that this has nothing whatsoever to do with the fact that treating sick people, and especially terminally ill people, is expensive. I mean, the government bureaucrats would never factor that into their calculations, would they?

I miss living in a civilized society.

What Happens When Health Care Becomes a .gov Bureaucracy?

It turns out that a lot of people don't want to work for a .gov bureaucracy. Canada Short Nearly 69,000 Health-Care Workers: Federal Report. There are probably also issues with pay, but that is just a guess on my part.

This is based on a report from the Canadian health care system itself.

Researchers concluded that Canada is short a total of 68,564 health-care professionals, which includes 22,823 doctors and 42,057 nurses. It also noted the country is in need of 1,866 occupational therapists, 2,543 physiotherapists, and 1,614 pharmacists.

There are couple follow-on effects. Shortage of workers leads to excessive overtime. Excessive overtime leads to burnout. Burnout leads to people leaving the profession, which brings us right back to that shortage of workers.

That memo said there was a shortfall of 29,655 registered nurses and 13,560 licensed practical nurses, and noted 40 percent of health-care workers said they felt “burned out” and 50 percent intended to leave the profession.

The other impact is death. More than 74,000 Canadians have died on health-care wait lists since 2018: report. These people aren't waiting for a pizza to be delivered. They are waiting to be treated for serious disease.

At least 15,474 Canadians died in 2023-24 alone before receiving various surgeries or diagnostic scans. The true number is likely double.

Why double? Because there is a lot of missing data. The data only represents health care organizations covering 62% of the population. So maybe not quite "double."

This doesn't include the effects Canada is seeing from Medical Assistance in Dying. It seems they've discovered that killing people is much cheaper than treating them in a lot of cases.

I'm not saying that the US does a better job. But this is the system usually (or often) held up as an example of what should be the US health care system.

Free Health Care Isn't Necessarily Good Health Care

This is a report on a survey of doctors, so it is told from their perspective, and hard to write off as insane patients whining about nothing.

More than a million British Columbians are currently waiting to see a specialist, a recent survey has found.

The Consultant Specialists of BC in partnership with Doctors of BC surveyed 1,000 specialists and said the results exposed a “waitlist crisis that is severely compromising the health and well-being of British Columbians.”

They wait four weeks for urgent cases, ten weeks for semi-urgent, and up to 10 months for non-urgent cases.

The video is pointless, though the part where the bureaucrats want more study and analysis of the data. But then the bureaucrats are blaming the COVID response, when doctors couldn't do surgeries. Of course that was a bureaucrat-created problem.

The article also doesn't break out what the different categories in the wait class mean, but the video seems to imply that orthopedic surgery - like for a bad hip - is not high on the list of priorities. That's only a guess on my part.

The simple answer is to hire more doctors, but since all doctors work for the government health care system, that isn't easy to do. But that isn't easy to do anywhere because the market doesn't impact on medicine anywhere, thanks to government bureaucracies and/or insurance bureaucracies.
