So how did cops screw up so badly? All they will say is that they "made a mistake."

Senior Assassin is a game involving squirt guns. They were trying "eliminate" people in a guy's driveway. He called police, thinking there was a problem.
Before officers arrived, her son showed up and fired several warning shots into the ground out of fear for their safety.
This is not allowed in most places, and not allowed in Louisiana.
Authorities later located and arrested several of the students, who are now facing criminal mischief charges. The man who fired the weapon was also cited for illegal discharge of a firearm.
Don't be stupid. Everyone is stupid in this incident. The high school students I can almost understand, as it is sort of the business of high school students to be stupid, but with all of the coverage of Ding-Dong-Ditch recently, you would think someone would realize that acting like a threat is bad.
And just don't do warning shots. Or at least know where they are and are not legal. They are mostly not legal.

If you have been living under a rock, you might not know that British Academy of Film and Television Arts hosted the BAFTAS Film Awards. While these things are usually just another pointless awards show, this year one of the films was I Swear, which was about the life of John Davidson. Mr. Davidson has an extreme form of Turrette Syndrome known as coprolalia, which causes him to have verbal uncontrolled outbursts. He shouted the N-word during the show. The internet has been melting down.
And in particular, Grace Randolph, "everyone's favorite bad take factory," decided to jump in, with no knowledge of Turrette Syndrome (she basically admitted that in a post on X) and has been roasted by absolutely everyone I like on YouTube.
I don't watch Grace Randolph except to see the clips. There were more previously, as one YouTube podcast even had a segment "What kind of dumb sh*t did Grace say this week." Drinker called her "the middle-aged liberal white woman who makes it her business to be offended on behalf of the rest of the world." She puts the AWFL in Affluent White Female Liberal. But then Grace Randolph was demanding he apologize for something that he could not control. (Spoiler alert, he did apologize, just not on Instagram/X/F*c*book/etc. He did it privately to the entertainers who were on stage.)
Marvin M. captures the basic problem. Even after she was told how she was wrong, she carried on.
Randolph did not walk back her position and continued posting about the incident.
At one point Randolph posted a survey asking how we should segregate the disabled, so as not to cause other people distress.

This was handled SO poorly - footage is forever, and also this man Davidson will have to deal with the horrible fallout as well.
This all started with another iteration of the stupid ding-dong ditch prank. Deputies were in the middle of a standard traffic stop at 11:20 p.m. when they heard gunfire nearby.
Sheriff Darren Campbell stated: "Deputies located an unoccupied vehicle stopped in the roadway with passenger doors open, broken glass on the ground, and apparent bullet holes in the vehicle." Nearby, they found five children in a field, including one with a leg injury.
The guy doing the shooting?
The homeowner, Craig Steven Mason, eventually identified himself as the shooter. According to investigators, Mason claimed he was woken up by noise, grabbed a handgun, and saw a vehicle passing by with no headlights.
So of course, being woken up by a noise, he thought the thing to do was to open fire on a vehicle with no headlights. He didn't know the vehicle. He didn't know why they had no headlights. Were they bad guys, or were they trying to escape bad guys? Or were they a bunch of stupid kids who presented no real threat to anyone?
Mason was arrested and charged with several things including assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. Sadly, he cannot be charged with felony stupidity.
This all took place in Statesville, North Carolina, which is about 35 miles north of Charlotte.
For the love of all that is holy people, try to be less stupid than this guy. At least remember that every bullet comes with a lawyer attached.
Pro tip. Do. Not. Leave. Your. Car. Running. Not for an instant. Not while you just run into the store/house for something you forgot. Do. Not. You may as well put a sign on top of the vehicle that says, "Steal Me!"
In this particular case I don't really care if he was justified, or not. He was an idiot.
He explained that he came to the Dollar General to pick up a family member and left his car running and unlocked in the parking lot.
The man said he noticed somebody getting inside of his car while he was in the store and ran outside to confront him.
What do you think is going to happen? Do you really think that there are no bad people in your neighborhood? Do you really believe that you are protected by your zip code? You are not. And you are an idiot.
Sadly, felony stupidity is not a crime in Oklahoma.
And yes, someone will say, "But you should be able to ..." In a perfect world, people would leave your car alone. People would not break into your home. But in case you hadn't noticed, that "perfect world" is in a different zip code.
People have died on Black Bear Pass, well, falling off the pass. CW McCall even has a song about "Black Bear Road."
Well, we took up off'n the highway and we come upon a sign says "Black Bear Road. You don't have to be crazy to drive this road, but it helps."
The pass was closed for about a day, while a tow was arranged. Not just any tow truck will do.
It isn't exactly clear how he came to drive off the trail, since there seems to be plenty of room. (As these things go.) One of the commenters guessed that he was busy "looking at the scenery" instead of looking at the trail and paying attention to driving.

A 50-year-old Florida man, Roman Rawicki, allegedly shot 17 times at a woman who mistakenly walked up to his home in Palm Bay. He now faces attempted first-degree [murder] charges.

Roman Rawicki was arrested on multiple charges. Among them are attempted first-degree murder, false imprisonment, child neglect, and criminal mischief.
While this guy is clearly a problem, others have let fear get the best of them. You cannot shoot someone, just because they are lost, or are trying to sell you solar panels.
According to Metro Police, the 26-year-old victim—later identified as Tyquan Jackson— was at a sports bar on Old Hickory Boulevard when he was informed that his vehicle was being broken into. The suspects reportedly fled in a waiting vehicle, and the victim got into his Hyundai Kona and followed.
He was found shortly after 11:15 PM Saturday on Interstate 40 with a bullet wound to his head.
Jackson was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in extremely critical condition. On Monday, July 28, police announced that Jackson had died from his injuries.
Police are investigating, but they don't even have a description of the car he was chasing.
They were gone, there was nothing to be gained in chasing them other that bolster your manhood and Ego... or catch a bullet for the unnecessary effort.
My question is always about the value of your car, the value of whatever is in your car, and the value of your life. The stories I see, because of the way I search news sources, are usually about homeowners confronting people in their driveways. The question is the same. What do you think you are going to do? In this case, he caught a bullet.

The consequences arrived after a court in Utah ordered sanctions after the filing included the first fake citation ever discovered in the state hallucinated by artificial intelligence.
Also problematic, the Utah court found that the filing included "multiple" mis-cited cases, in addition to "at least one case that does not appear to exist in any legal database (and could only be found in ChatGPT."
So much for that education he paid tens (hundreds?) of thousands of dollars for.
Language Models like ChatGPT are just that, language models. They are not truth models or fact models. They really only know when the language is right.
I'm guessing that this isn't how he saw things working out.
A dad noticed two men near his vehicle through his home surveillance cameras on April 22, the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office said in a May 8 post. He yelled at the two men and they then ran off.
One of the men returned in a vehicle and fired gunshots at the home, deputies said. The bullets struck the front door, window and the homeowner’s daughter, according to deputies.
He had to apply a tourniquet to his daughter's injury.
Bexar County, Texas is home to San Antonio.
Deputies did manage to track the guy down, via security camera video, and charge him with assault with a deadly weapon, thanks to fingerprints on the car. And they recovered two stolen cars.
If you are that worried about your car, or its contents, you might consider parking in a more secure place. And are you really sure that you understand all of the follow-on effects you might be unleashing by confronting bad guys, just so you can speak harshly to them?

Though the sheriff's office did not release a motive, a source close to the investigation and neighbors told FOX13 that the man might have been shot while confronting people trying to steal a car outside his home.
His wounds are not life threatening, and he is expected to survive, but that is mostly a bit of luck, than anything he did.

On Wednesday an off-duty Florida Department of Law Enforcement agent shot a Bishop Kenny High student in the arm while he was playing “senior assassins” in Nassau County.
In addition to some inane questions by "Professional Journalists" (so called), we get this statement from the State's Attorney.
“The water guns often look like real firearms, certainly in the dark,” said State Attorney Melissa Nelson.
Action News Jax asked Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper if the agent identified herself as law enforcement before shooting the teen.

That's right. A $350 pair of Nike shoes, that came with an app. They are from 2019. The app is being discontinued and removed from the Android and Apple environments. You are SOL for the app.
You can still make the shoes tie themselves, you just can't do it by way of your phone.
Why did Nike discontinue the app? Because they can. And because they have your $350 bucks, and the side of the box said they could screw you over whenever they want to, and you agreed to that when you opened the box.
In an announcement recently spotted by The Verge, Nike's brief explanation for discontinuing the app is that Nike "is no longer creating new versions of Adapt shoes.” The company started informing owners about the app's retirement about four months ago.
Those who already bought the shoes can still use the app after August 6, but it's expected that iOS or Android updates will eventually make the app unusable. Also, those who get a new device won't be able to download Adapt after August 6.
Why did BMW try to make access to the heated seats in your car a subscription? At least they got beat down on that, but they were trying to extort a monthly or yearly payment from people who bought their cars to have continued access to the heated seats they purchased. Or did they really purchase heated seats? If BMW can take them away from you at any time, do you own it?
Samsung bricked a refrigerator, because they didn't want to support the app. The refrigerator in that case STOPPED keeping stuff cold - it wasn't just that the app features were no longer available. The refrigerator was turned into a boat anchor.

A 23-year-old man was rescued from a Utah mountainside after he followed a “shortcut” route recommended by Google Maps and ended up trapped in his car.
He ended up on a dirt road I MIGHT take a 4 wheel drive vehicle on, if it had sufficient clearance. I wouldn't take a subcompact econo sedan on that road. He was able to call for help using his cellphone. That isn't always the case.
This article only lists one incident that resulted in a fatality.
In 2022, a married dad of two drove his Jeep off the road into a creek on a dark, stormy night after following Google Maps directions — which failed to take into account that the bridge there had collapsed nearly a decade earlier.
That resulted in a lawsuit against Google.
Within about 10 miles from where I am sitting, there are 2 signs, that basically say, "I don't care what your GPS says, this is NOT a Road." There used to be 3 signs, but that last location did some serious landscaping that you would need a tank to get past. They took the sign down. And yes, one of those two spots is in front of a bridge that washed out more than 50 years ago. It is still on a map, somewhere.
Police said the suspect pulled over in front of the man's house and started urinating on the sidewalk.

Okay, I get it. You're insulted. You're mad. (I won't say it.) Going out to confront this guy is a bad idea.

We no longer live in a civilized society. Any interaction with a stranger can be deadly. You should pick and choose your interactions with care.
Cops are investigating, but unless the car's license plate was caught on a security camera, I don't know what they are basing investigation on that on. And that assumes that the car wasn't stolen.
I would say vent your righteous indignation by calling 911, but that is probably a hopeless cause in most cities. If you are not bleeding, or in danger of bleeding, it will be a low-priority call. Once he got shot it was a high priority call, of course.
To everyone – left, right, and center – who believes that the market economy can and will be made to operate better if more power to superintended and intervene in the economy is given to government officials, spend the less than two minutes it takes to watch this performance by the current Chairman of the U.S. president’s Council of Economic Advisors.
