Guam Extends the Right of Self-Defense Slightly

Guam is a part of the United States, after all. Former Chief of Police calls for public education on expanded castle doctrine.

Guam is an unincorporated territory of the United States in the Mariana Islands, located in the Western Pacific Ocean. It is about 1400 miles south of Japan, and about 3700 miles west of Hawaii.

The Castle Doctrine in Guam has been expanded to include the curtilage of your home.

We think of curtilage as an extended area outside your house that you take care of,” [University of Guam legal studies faculty Frank Ishizaki said].

It is not a Stand Your Ground law.

“What are your rights? When can you use force? Just because you piss me off is not a sufficient justification to hurt somebody,” Ishizaki said.

“You have to have this reasonable fear of peril, death or serious injury….”

Not a big step, but a step toward liberty.

Neighbor Stops Home Invasion - International Edition

Other neighbors were not helpful with their shouts to "shoot him." 'I put a gun on his face': Neighbor stops home invasion

He heard a commotion as this guy was trying to break into his neighbors' home.

In the struggle to keep Fortes out, the homeowners repeatedly slammed the door on his arm. He continued to try to force his way inside, court documents stated.

He checked to see if the guy was alone, and then he confronted the would-be home-invader.

Neighbors were what I can only describe as bloodthirsty.

When Manansala had his gun pointed at Fortes, the last thing he wanted to do was shoot him. But in the moment, Manansala was being bombarded by shouts and yells from neighbors urging him to pull the trigger.

Cops came and arrested him.

Are we shocked to learn that he had just gotten out of prison a few days before?

The man he stopped, Eric Fortes, was released from prison a few days earlier. He was serving time on a theft by receiving charge after he had been found driving a stolen vehicle in 2019. He had also been charged with possession of a Schedule II controlled substance in 2018, according to court documents.

And the gun owner who intervened has a few nice things to say about responsibility.

“People need to understand that every bullet that comes out of your barrel, you’re responsible for that. If you hit a bystander with that bullet, even though you’re trying to shoot someone else, you’re going to jail. You’re responsible for that,” Manansala said.

Alec Baldwin did not comment on that statement.

Self-defense is a human-right.
