Where Would We Be Without Researchers?

Anyone who has ever been a second-grade student, should have realized this was going to be the case. The original article is behind a paywall. Here's another link. ‘Not Good for Learning’ - New research is showing the high costs of long school closures in some communities.

Because of the pandemic, some schools were completely remote. Others had in-class instruction. Some were a mixture of both.

These differences created a huge experiment, testing how well remote learning worked during the pandemic. Academic researchers have since been studying the subject, and they have come to a consistent conclusion: Remote learning was a failure.

And this is an article from the NY Times, so progressive issues are at the forefront.

One of the most alarming findings is that school closures widened both economic and racial inequality in learning. In Monday’s newsletter, I told you about how much progress K-12 education had made in the U.S. during the 1990s and early 2000s: Math and reading skills improved, especially for Black and Latino students.

The Covid closures have reversed much of that progress, at least for now. Low-income students, as well as Black and Latino students, fell further behind over the past two years, relative to students who are high-income, white or Asian.

Was any other outcome expected? And if a different outcome was expected, who expected that outcome? Aside from the unions.

Expecting kids to sit in front of Zoom call is insane. I would have trouble with 6 or 7 hours of Zoom in a day, and I have pretty good concentration.

I'm sorry, but no one should have expected a 1st or 2nd grader to get much education from "remote learning."

This is a problem that will reverberate for at least a generation.

Here's another look at the same issue from the WaPo. These schools did less to contain covid. Their students flourished.

In suburban Colorado Springs. Classes reopened quickly.

In the country’s largest school systems, such as those in New York City, Los Angeles, D.C. and Chicago, teacher unions and concerned parents fought plans to reopen. Public health officials warned that social distancing would save lives, and schools responded by devising hybrid programs or simply sticking with virtual learning. But, over time, these measures also imposed costs: Today, students are contending with significant learning loss and mental health issues.

The mental health issues are not just elementary school kids, but reach into the higher grades.

Who would have thought that isolating teenagers would have an impact on their mental health? Not the Experts.

Now the WaPo being to the Left of Charmian Mao, won't come out and say, "Conservative communities did the right thing for the kids," but they come pretty damn close.

Every might-have-been is hashed over; how they were not "following guidelines" or "doing everything to keep people safe." But then it's the WaPo. (The Unions can't be wrong, can they?)

Hat tip to Had Enough Therapy? The Effect of School Lockdowns, in which the following is noted:

Longtime readers of this blog know that closing schools during the pandemic was a very, very bad idea. Today, most sensible adults accept this judgment, but, what is most intriguing is the revelation, offered in a Guy Benson interview with Dr. Deborah Birx, that the CDC knew all about the damage being inflicted on American schoolchildren, but refused to keep schools open.

You might say that in the war between the teachers’ unions and the science, the teachers’ unions won. And we should all question how seriously the CDC takes the science.

There is more and many more links at Had Enough Therapy?

The Difference Between Chicago and the Suburbs

The suburbs are still trying to enforce the Rule of Law. Man who abducted, sexually assaulted woman in DuPage County gets 101 years.

A Kentucky man who was convicted of abducting, sexually assaulting and robbing a college student in suburban Chicago will spend the rest of his life behind bars after a judge sentenced him to 101 years in prison.

State law mandates that he serve 85% of his sentence. That would be 85 years behind bars before he is eligible for parole. Since he is 37, that is a death sentence.

The non-prosecutors of Cook County and Chicago would no doubt have taken a plea that would have had him back on the streets at some point. But not DuPage County.

Civilization is built on the rule of law. The Left seems bent on destroying both the Rule of Law, and Western Civilization.

Democrats Won't Even Think About Conservative Minorities

From The Other McCain - ‘Democrats Like to Pretend …’

“. . . that it’s always 1963, because that’s the last time they can remember being the good guys,” says Professor Glenn Reynolds.

Click thru for an interaction of Eric Swalwell, a Calfornia Liberal Democrat, and Wesley Hunt, a black Republican form Texas who was nominated to Congress from a district that is 70% white. It is both entertaining and sad.

Trust me, I’m the guy who wrote the book — well, I co-wrote it, anyway — demonstrating that the Democratic Party was rotten from the start, when Jefferson struck his deal with Aaron Burr and Tammany Hall to form the national party in opposition to John Adams, Alexander Hamilton and the Federalists. Despite my own sympathies for the Jeffersonian ideal, and my opposition to the Adams/Hamilton axis representing northeastern hegemony and centralization of power in the early Union, nevertheless the seeds of corruption were present from the conception of what eventually became the Democratic Party.

So much more. And here's a link to the Hunt/Swalwell dust-up, or part of it anyway.

As for Democrats and conservative minorities, they are sticking to their line that we are all misguided, or mentally ill. After all, if we were smart, we would agree with them on everything.

A Failure of the Victim-selection Process

He decided to break into an occupied home. It was a mistake. Police: Clare man, 48, was shot and killed

Clare officers had been dispatched to the home invasion in progress on McEwan Street and heard gunshots from the residence upon arrival.

“Initial investigation revealed that the homeowner fired a weapon at the intruder causing fatal injuries,” police said. “Neither the homeowner nor the officers were injured.”

The investigation continues, but self-defense is a human-right.

Ride The Subway? Not Until It Is Safe

And it doesn't sound like they are trying to make it safe. Subway conductor confronts MTA chief Janno Lieber on crime

He only gave his name as Chris.

A subway conductor outraged about attacks on transit riders and his fellow transit workers confronted MTA CEO Janno Lieber during a live radio interview Wednesday — calling the subway a “magnet and haven for criminals” and demanding more cops to address the problem.

You can click thru for the "official response." What caught my attention is the "actions" taken by NYPD. (Is doing nothing an action?)

“During my shift, you might see the cops come patrol for about a half-hour, and they leave,” he said. “We have deranged people walking around the subways. And the cops, NYPD, will take them off the northbound train — where they harass and torment our ridership and my coworkers — and put them on the southbound train.” Subway crime

So they address disruptive people on northbound trains by putting them on southbound trains. I suppose that they put the people on the southbound trains back on the northbound.

But you can see their point. Why arrest them, when they can't be held? Holding people on bail is unfair, and so not allowed in NY State.

If The System™ was interested in improving safety, they would be getting people causing problems and committing crimes off the street. They aren't interested, and they aren't doing anything.

Civilization is predicated on the rule of law. When that is gone, you have anarchy.

Here is my standard reference to Hobbes' State of War, which exists after the breakdown of law and order

In such condition there is no place for industry, because the fruit thereof is uncertain, and consequently no culture of the earth, no navigation nor use of the commodities that may be imported by sea, no commodious building, no instruments of moving and removing such things as require much force, no knowledge of the face of the earth; no account of time, no arts, no letters, no society, and, which is worst of all, continual fear and danger of violent death, and the life of man solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short.

3 Hour Wait After 911 Call

Lately I've been seeing a lot of stories about long waits for EMS after a 911 call. This is extreme. ‘I was praying they would hurry’: Calgary woman waits almost 3 hours for ambulance

"I couldn’t get up. I couldn't move. I knew something popped or (was) broken," Broad said.

Her friend tried to help her up but, he, too has limited mobility. He called 911 at around 2 p.m.

At 4:30 the friend call 911 again. They showed up at 4:40 PM.

"So for over two and a half hours, I laid on the ground in shock, shaking, crying and in extreme pain," she said.

This is a function of a lack of EMS and ambulance personnel, and long transfer times a hospitals.

Calling 911 is a fine thing to do, but their attention to your situation may not be everything you hoped for.

HeyJackass! brings us the April Wrap-up.

A strong, final inning of the April portion of Spring Training managed to nearly tie last year’s homicide count but (as of this post) fell 2 runs short.

The top-line stats for April: 55 killed, of that 51 were shot and killed, and 205 shot and wounded. The detailed stats, such as the gender and racial breakdown of victims, #ShotInTheAss, and more can be found at the link above.

May of 2021 was active with 70 homicides and 333 wounded, but didn’t see the complete and total shitshow that the end of May 2020 showed the world.

"Literally Who" is Back

Well, Literally Who 3, at least. The Endless Grift of ‘Literally Who?’

In case you don’t get that reference, the #GamerGate crew dubbed the three self-anointed “victims” as Literally Who (Zoe Quinn), Literally Who 2 (Anita Sarkeesian) and Literally Who 3 ([Brianna] Wu), the point of these sobriquets being that practically nobody in the videogame development community had ever heard of these people until #GamerGate happened.

There is more about the origins of "Literally Who" and #GamerGate. (I ignored the #GamerGate kerfuffle as much as possible at the time, because it was insane.)

Anyway, Literally Who 3 is apparently Executive Director of a Super PAC, working tireless to lose to more establishment Democrats. Though, that isn't how she refers to the work of the PAC. Here is how Robert Stacy McCain sums up the work of the PAC:

Way to go, Madame Executive Director — wasting donor money on doomed kook candidates who get stomped in Democratic primaries. Please, offer more strategic help to “progressives”!

Some people won't let go of the 15 minutes of fame.

As Cool As You Try

Melissa Etheridge released an album in 2021 when I wasn't paying attention. The album came out a year ago, yesterday. The video for today's song was released in August of last year. I have always liked her music. I own several CDs - which are apparently  anachronisms in this age of digital music. I never managed to see her in concert.

I usually don't like videos, but this one is set in a lesbian bar (real or mythical? doesn't matter) that reminds me of a couple of bars I frequented in my youth. Well, minus the ever-present cloud of cigarette smoke. And none of them had live music. Lesbians are famous for having no money, and lesbian bars were famous for just holding on, or going out of business. Paying for live entertainment was out of the question.

It is also a bit comforting to see that I'm not the only person who gained weight during the COVID insanity. Or maybe it is age. We are both the same age, after all.

This is "As Cool As You Try" by Melissa Etheridge from her 2021 album One Way Out.

An interesting side-note to this album, is that the songs were written back in the dark ages, before Melissa came out as a lesbian. Melissa Etheridge says songs on new album were written before coming out.

Etheridge told The Desert Sun the songs were written before she publicly came out as a lesbian in 1993 at the Triangle Ball, which was an LGBTQ celebration of then-President Bill Clinton’s first inauguration.

The example she used is the song "Wild Wild Wild," which is about having an affair with a married woman. That wasn't ready for prime-time at the time.

She also recruited original band members to appear on the album, so it sounds a lot like her early stuff.

‘Worst Hot Take’ Competition

From The Other McCain - Who Is Charlie Warzel and Why Do I Feel This Urge to Give Him a Brutal Fisking? : The Other McCain

My first thought was, “What? Somebody’s trying to out-do Amanda Duarte in the ‘Worst Hot Take’ competition?” You see this is Charlie Warzel’s spin on the leaked Supreme Court draft opinion that’s caused such an uproar this week that Justice Samuel Alito had to cancel a scheduled appearance at a judicial conference because of death threats.

So who is this guy?

So having spent more than $40,000 a year to send young Charlie to The Shipley School, the Warzels then spent roughly $300,000 for their boy to get his diploma from Hamilton. Privilege, with a capital “P.”

The English language lacks a word for this colossal level of stupidity. Duarte has described herself as a “barren, child-eating sex witch” (by which phrase, of course, she means she’s a feminist) who has done a series of performances that pass for “comedy” in New York City. Antisemitism Masquerading as Woke Enlightenment

Chicago Contrarian brings us a sad story. The Latin School of Chicago: Bullying of a Jewish Student Leads to Suicide, $100M Lawsuit.

Nate Bronstein, a 15-year-old student at the Latin School of Chicago, committed suicide earlier this year after consistent bullying by other students and the failure of the school to report to his parents his complaints, including direct communications between Mr. Bronstein and the school’s senior administration, according to a recent lawsuit filed by the family. [SNIP]

Another parent familiar with Latin’s equity and diversity programs states: “Latin takes any words against protected classes of students so seriously. Even admitting to ‘not being attracted’ to someone with darker skin is grounds for discipline or dismissal. But there is a double standard in that it is perfectly acceptable for protected groups of students as well as teachers and administrators to shame, humiliate, punish and intellectually bully those who do not accept prevailing woke educational philosophies which argue reverse racism and anti-Semitism does not exist, unless it comes from white supremacy.”‍

Bronstein, being Jewish, could not - in the eyes for the administration of the Latin School - ever be a victim. The rise in Antisemitism and related hate crimes are not to be discussed at the Latin School. Don't clutter the issue with FACTS! This is the 21st century! We only deal with woke feelings.

The reason Latin could never acknowledge Mr. Bronstein’s bullying is because he was not a victim, as the complaint notes. He was a Jew, a member of a group that “Latin’s DEI leadership,” in the words of one parent, considers part of the community that “must be retrained and fall in line.” ‍The overwhelming tragedy of the situation, of course, is that bullying and victimization is never acceptable, by anyone, to anyone, in a K-12 educational environment. Nor is it legal, according to the court filing.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) wasn't designed cover EVERYONE at The Latin School. Only the Woke-approved victim-classes, which definitely does not include Jews. Not even when you consider the number of antisemitic hate crimes that have been committed. (This is another one.)

Click thru for how the admissions process is rife with antisemitism and other racial and cultural bias.

“Pump your gas, stay off the phone.”

Crime has become something you cannot be oblivious to. DeKalb County commissioner, community seek different approach to stop violence at gas station

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — The legal system doesn’t appear to be a deterrent to crime, something DeKalb County commissioner Lorraine Cochran-Johnson says needs to change.

Cochran-Johnson told Channel 2′s Justin Carter this is something that keeps her awake at night — shootings and murders plaguing gas stations and convenience stores in DeKalb.

The quote that forms the title to this post if from John Hammond.

John Hammond works security at gas stations throughout the metro and says he carries two guns and wears a bulletproof vest everyday.

Can you carry concealed? Maybe you should consider the fact that if you're accosted at the gas pump, the cops are not going to save you. Even if you can call 911 between the time you recognize there is a problem, and you are overwhelmed by the problem.

Being oblivious to your surroundings is never a good idea. Being oblivious to your surroundings when you are at a location known to be a crime hot-spot is a truly bad idea.

Why Are Guns So Prevalent in US Culture?

This is a quite nice interview from Newsy with Professor David Yamane. Light Over Heat #18: Why Are Guns So Prominent in American Culture?

If you are not reading Professor Yamane's work and watching his videos, you are missing out. You can find his two blogs, Gun Culture 2.0 and Gun Curious in the sidebar under "Politics and Guns." He also has a YouTube Channel, Light Over Heat. There is a link to today's video below, or you can search for his channel.

I was pleased that the online streaming news network “Newsy” asked to interview me for their nightly program “The Why.” They wanted to address the question, “Why is gun culture so prominent in the U.S.?”

This is the introduction produced by Newsy. It is quite good on its own.

A little bit of history, and little bit of where we are now, including a review of how prevalent guns are in movies.

Below you will find the interview portion of the Newsy story, together with a brief introduction by Professor Yamane.

Gun Control Failure in Brazil

Impro Guns brings us The folly of gun control in Brazil

What is the point of gun control if it doesn't work to stop criminals from getting guns? Oh yeah. Keep the law-abiding disarmed!

The local gang armorers are pumping these things out in ever increasing numbers from a few dollars worth of scrap pipe and the authorities are helpless to stop it.

And they are full-automatics.

There are also MAC style submachine guns in Brazil. See this link.

Why I Don't Live in The People's Republic of Illinois

One of the many reasons, anyway. JACKSON: Illinois law favors criminals, not citizens

He is completely correct. While places like Chicago are busy putting repeat offenders back onto the street, if you miss one little bit of paperwork they will hang you. And if you defend yourself... Well, they HATE self-defense.

This article is in response to Santa Rosa County Sheriff Johnson, and his advice that people in his Florida county should shoot intruders.

What do we have in Illinois? A far cry from Florida’s rights.

To protect yourself or property here, “The intruder must enter in a violent, tumultuous, or riotous manner; the homeowner must believe that deadly force is necessary to protect himself or another person inside the dwelling from assault; or the homeowner must believe that deadly force is necessary to stop an intruder from committing a felony offense in the dwelling.”

There is more.
