What Should a Woman Do If a Man Breaks Into Her Home?

I suppose the gun-haters will say that she should make tea, or something. Webster apartment break-in: Man who broke down door shot to death by woman inside, police say - ABC13 Houston

She was home. Other people were there including children. He broke open the door to the apartment, and she fired one shot from a firearm.

Police said they believe a woman was defending herself when she shot the man who broke down her front door.

The DA will make the determination if she faces charges, or actually I think all fatal shootings in Texas (not a lawyer!) get referred to a grand jury.

Self-defense is a human-right, and this did not take place in New Jersey.

Lies, Damn Lies, and Biden's Talking Points

Historic inflation is good news to the Democrats. Deliberate Dishonesty: Biden Keeps Repeating Lies About the Economy : The Other McCain

Permit me to interrupt and say that today’s employment report was not “good news,” and it certainly was not “excellent.” Also, why was Biden giving this speech from his beach house in Rehoboth Beach? But never mind, his handlers wrote this bit about the “kitchen table” discussion of rising gas prices when he was growing up “about 100 miles from” Rehoboth Beach. Except of course, when Joe was growing up, there was no wild inflation of gas prices. In 1948, when Truman was president and Joe was 6 years old, the price of a gallon of gas was 26 cents. Ten years later, when Joe was 16 and ready to get his driver’s license, the price of a gallon of gas had increased to . . . 30 cents.

It Takes a Thief

Back in April, after a few days of short-sleeve weather, I was greeted one a morning with a snow shower. And since WXRT's Saturday Morning Flashback was covering a year I didn't find interesting, I did something I haven't done in quite some time. I started reading the music sites. In particular I turned to Pitchfork. They rated the album Labyrinthitis by Destroyer as a "Best New Album" under the Rock category.

Dan Bejar’s marvelously inscrutable songwriting reaches beyond meaning. On his most live-sounding record in years, he finds clarity when language recedes and the music takes over.

Overall I have to disagree with Pitchfork, though maybe I am just out of touch with Indie/Alternative Rock. In a world where everything is over-produced, and AutoTune is on every vocal this album is a bit odd. Still, there are a couple of songs that made me think of "Birdhouse in Your Soul" by They Might Be Giants. I can't really say why that is, but it did.

Anyway, This is "It Takes a Thief" by Destroyer from their 2022 album Labyrinthitis. I will give a few of the songs another listen eventually.

The Unarmed Woman with a Gun, and More

A few story updates. Important Updates : The Other McCain

26-year-old Leona Hale told police she was pregnant. A "witness" claimed she was unarmed. That last part was bogus; I don't know about the 1st. Then she got shot fleeing a carjacking

Is that a pistol in your hand, or are you just happy to see me? Hale has been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful use of a weapon and a misdemeanor of resisting a lawful detention.

I'm sure that the witness was right and the cops bodycam video has been altered. Or maybe the witness was honestly mistaken. It couldn't be that the witness was lying through their teeth hoping for another excuse to riot over police brutality. Could it?

Also a fundraiser that Robert's mother-in-law was doing for the Walk for Life, and finally...

Yes, former MSNBC/CNN star Michael Avenatti — whom Brian “Tater” Stelter promoted as a 2020 presidential candidate — is going to have lots of time to think about his future in the penitentiary.

I love a bit of schadenfreude in the morning. Karma, by any other name, would smell as sweet.

Good Times

A Musical Interlude for Friday afternoon...

Sam Cooke was one of the many artists who died too young. You know his music, even if you don't know his name, though how you could not know his name is beyond me. He brought us "Chain Gang" and "Twistin' the Night Away" and more. And today's song.

According to Songfacts, this was one of the last songs he recorded. He died December 11th, 1964, at the age of 33.

Gotta tell you, evenin' sun is sinkin' low
The clock on the wall say it's time to go
I got my plans, I don't know ‘bout you
I'll tell you exactly what I'm gonna do

Get in the groove and let the good time roll
I'm gonna stay here till I soothe my soul
If it take all night long
Yeah!

This is "Good Times" by Sam Cooke. It was released as a single in 1964 from the album Ain't That Good News. Both versions are slightly different, and the version we have today is the album version.

This song has been covered by several artists. The Rolling Stones recorded a version in 1965, and Journey recorded a version with The Tower of Power horn section in 1992. For a list (I'm not sure if it is complete) see Second Hand Songs

The Racially-motivated Murder No One Cares About

This is not a national story. Nothing to see here. Move along! His Name Was Seth Smith - by Chris - Karlstack

Under Gleichschaltung, people were required to greet each other with “Heil Hitler!” instead of “Guten Tag!” Nowadays they are required to put pronouns and BLM in their email signature. If you hadn’t figured this out already — the point of putting pronouns in your email signature isn’t to denote your gender, it is to identify non-compliant enemies of the state.

The guy who killed Seth Smith took a plea that reduced his charges down to manslaughter.

Professor David Yamane at Gun Curious starts things off with Talking About American Gun Culture, Mass Shootings, and Gun Control in the Wake of Uvalde on Newsy. (You should be reading Prof. Yamane's writing and watching his videos!)

I was invited on Newsy’s Morning Rush to talk about American gun culture, mass shootings, and gun control in the Wake of the Uvalde shootings.

As usual, I find myself trying to capture the complex reality of guns in the United States, and pointing out ways in which “things are not what they seem.” I can’t help it. I’m a sociologist.

The "How Dare You Live Without Me!" Attitude

It cost him his life. 911 calls capture Henderson domestic shooting | Las Vegas Review-Journal

He was "unhappy" about how their relationship ended. So he showed up at her house, broke a bunch of windows, broke into the home, left to retrieve a firearm, and went back the home.

“He has a gun to my boyfriend’s head, ma’am, what do I do, what do I do?” she could be heard frantically asking the dispatcher.

Oh, there were 3 children in the home, when he decided that this was what he wanted to do. It was 4:30 in the morning, after all.

Eventually, she figured out what to do.

“I’m going to shoot him, ma’am,” she said.

About 30 seconds later, a single gunshot could be heard before she started crying.

A separate 911 call was received from a 9-year-old girl in the home.

“I’m very scared,” she said.

That 9-year-old witnessed the shooting and the death.

Even the dead-guy's stepfather said that he should not have broken the window, and added a firearm to the situation. Though they never want to admit that self-defense is a real thing.

In the days leading up to the shooting, Pinson sent Wright emails that suggested he was upset with how their relationship ended, which Spencer said would “bolster a claim of self-defense.”

He could not admit that the relationship was over. He could have gone out with friends. This happened in Las Vegas, so he could have spent the night gambling. Instead he thought it was a great idea to go threaten he ex-wife's new boyfriend.

If he wasn't dead, someone else would be. Maybe several people in that home would be dead.

There is more. The 911 calls provided a lot of detail, and there is security camera video that covers a portion of the encounter. (Though neither the complete 911 calls, nor the video are included in that article linked above.)

Cops don't expect charges to be filed, but that is up to the district attorney, and cops are still completing their investigation, before they forward everything to the DA's office.

Self-defense is a human-right. And in Nevada, it is mostly your legal right.

Uvalde - Expecting "The System" to Save You is Foolish

American Thinker is up next because this story has important details. Uvalde: The new face of policing

The cops will suffer no repercussions for doing nothing at the Uvalde school shooting. That has been shown time and again. They do nothing. (OK so the Sheriff in Broward County, FL lost his job after that school shooting.)

The story grows worse with each new detail. Cops took nearly twenty minutes to get to the school in a ten-minute-wide town. Once there, they entered the school, took some fire resulting in minor injuries, and fled — no Fallujah vets here. Outside, they harassed, attacked, and arrested fearful parents begging them to do their jobs. At some point, a number of off-duty Border Patrolmen arrived but were denied permission to engage. As many as eighteen locals finally entered the school, but their tac chief decided it had transformed into a "barricade situation," which, according to the book, evidently means that no action is necessary, so instead, they moped about in the hallway.

So they couldn't be bothered to save kids, but they could arrest unarmed parents. A great use of taxpayer funds.

American Conservative has a more philosophical take on Uvlade: Courage Unto the Breach

It has been often said, and truly, that the man who does not know when to die, does not know how to live. I wonder then how some of the police of Uvalde, Texas, can live. For surely if there was an occasion to die, and die well, it was last week, when dying children were calling 911 from just behind a door. But they waited instead, and let a Border Patrol Tactical Unit do what they should have done: go into the breach and risk death to kill the gunman and save the children.

You should read both of those articles.

Oh... Apparently Uvalde PD is no longer cooperating with the State of Texas to investigate exactly what happened.

Here is a photo of the Uvalde SWAT Team. I have seen reports that they suck up 40 percent of their department's budget, but I can find no definitive source on that. (I have not looked too hard.) Whatever the percentage, do the people of Uvalde get anything aside from snappy photos on the internet? They may look cool. They are definitely not cool.

The Left Didn't Want Strong Men, So They Have None

Isn't this what the Left wanted? It might not be what they wanted, it is certainly what they asked for. Where are all the men? - American Thinker

A woman is accosted by a man on a NY Subway. No one comes to her aid, even though there were other passengers on the train.

Australian news anchor Rita Panahi, calls this a sign of 'societal decay,' and wants to know "Where are the men?"

American Thinker has the answer:

If I had to guess, they were standing in their place, checking their male privilege, toning down their toxic masculinity, and coping with how their Time's Up. Perhaps the men wanted a demonstration of how women are actually the stronger sex. Perhaps the threat level just did not seem that high to them; New York has a duty to retreat, after all. Besides, New York has been in the habit of arresting those who defend themselves.

Most likely, the men who were on the train did not care about this woman. They did not know her and were not likely to ever get to know her. How could it be worth it for these men to possibly be killed or maimed (it is unknown if the aggressor had a knife) for the sake of someone who may as well not exist to them?

Mentioned are George Zimmerman, and Kyle Rittenhouse, and what they went through for defending themselves. There is of course of key difference. No one on a New York City Subway is legally armed. Add in the "duty to retreat" and stepping up seems like a bad idea.

While I could quote Yeats, talking about how "The best lack all conviction," or I could quote Hobbes, about the state of war that exists when there is no power (police power) to hold all in check. Instead I will quote the Graham Killhouse Rules:

1. NOBODY IS COMING TO SAVE YOU.  Whether an event lasts a few seconds, a few hours, or even a few days – you have to work as though nobody is coming to save you.

2. You are your savior, so start working because EVERYTHING IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY.  You are your security, you are your medic, you are your rescuer.

3. You are your own best resource to SAVE WHO NEEDS TO BE SAVED.  Nobody wants to save your life more than you, so set yourself up for success by having the simple tools and knowledge to do so: do what you can with what you have.  Recognize that nobody is in a better position to start saving your life than you.

4. Sometimes saving lives means you have to KILL WHO NEEDS TO BE KILLEDIt has been almost 15 years since I first wrote “the more effective you are at taking a life, the more successful you’ll be at saving one” and nothing in the intervening time has changed my mind.  Be swift, be decisive, be final.

5. Mostly, ALWAYS BE WORKING.  There is always something you can be doing to improve your position.  Always.  Because nobody is coming to save you.

Nowhere is this more true that in Blue Cities, where all the law-abiding have been disarmed, the lawyers will let the bad guys go, but prosecute the citizens for daring to stand up for themselves. (You MUST rely on the STATE!).

Don't Bring a Knife to a Gunfight

Things won't go well for you if you do. 49-year-old man shot, killed near 39th and Grovers avenues

Detectives said they detained and interviewed a man on scene who made a claim of self-defense. Sgt. Vincent Cole, a spokesperson with Phoenix police, said Standley was allegedly making threats with a knife.

The man was released based on evidence and witness statements, police said.

The DA will make the final determination, but self-defense is a human-right, and in Arizona it may be your legal right.

Candace Owens on the Drive to Produce Angry People

When the educational system found in our large cities "graduate" people who cannot read, write, or do math, you are creating generations of people who will fail. If you can't read, how do you use the internet? If you can't use the internet in 2022, how do you apply for a job? How do you learn how to do the job?

The place where she starts is with TV shows. Shows focused on family were prevalent when she was growing up. Not so much today. Is this an orchestrated attack on family, or part of it anyway? I leave that you to decide.

This it the Candace Owens video for Why the Media Shifted From “Family Matters” to “Love & Hip Hop”

In the World of Supercomputers...

There is much going on. Los Alamos to power up supercomputer using all-Nvidia CPU, GPU Superchips

While looking for an article at The Register to post in a comment over at SiGraybeard's site I tripped over a bit of news on supercomputing.

Before getting started a couple of definitions from Nvidia. Nvidia’s Grace CPU-only Superchip is 144 cores of an ARM-compatible CPU and a total of 1 terabyte of DRAM. The Grace-Hopper Superchip is 72 cores of Grace CPU, 72 cores of H100 GPU with 512 gigabytes of DRAM and 80 gigabytes of video memory. All of this makes use of Nvidia's 900 gigabit per second NVVLink-C2C interconnect bus. The Grace and the Grace-Hopper chips were announced in the spring.

All of that tech is being used by Los Alamos National Lab (LANL) and Hewlett-Packard Enterprise (HPE) to build the Venado supercomputer.

Venado is hoped to be the first in a wave of high-performance computers that use an all-Nvidia architecture, in this case using Grace-Hopper Superchips that combine CPU and GPU dies, and Grace CPU-only Superchips.

This supercomputer "will be the first system deployed not just with Grace-Hopper in terms of the converged Superchip but it’ll also have a cluster of Grace CPU-only Superchip modules,” Dion Harris, Nvidia’s head of datacenter product marketing for HPC, AI, and Magnum IO, said during an Nvidia press conference ahead of ISC.

Not to be outdone by upstart Americans, Swiss National Supercomputing Centre is building the Alps System. Alps will be using some of Nvidia's tech, but I don't think it is the Grace/Grace-Hopper architecture.

Planned to come online in 2023, the “Alps” system infrastructure will replace CSCS’s existing Piz Daint supercomputer and serve as a general-purpose system open to the broad community of researchers in Switzerland and the rest of the world.

All of this is off-topic for this blog, but appeals to the computer nerd that I was in my youth.

For those of you who do not know who Grace Hopper was, see this link. She was a Read Admiral in the Naval Reserve, she got her PhD. in Mathematics in 1934, and was responsible for the phrase "debugging a computer" (after she found a moth between the reeds of a relay in the The Mark II Aiken Relay Calculator. (My link has a picture of the log-book page and the bug. "First actual case of a bug being found.") There is an AEGIS Class Guided Missile Destroyer named in her honor, and more.

This was the article I did post at SiGraybeard, but there are so many more at The Register that deal with the Reg Standards Soviet! All this was in response to an article at Accuweather that measured an asteroid in giraffe's. (And unlike most news organizations, The Register has a genuine sense of humor!)

She Should Have Let It Go

Road Rage never solved anything for anyone. Woman waves gun in road rage incident, man fires back in self defense

She thought that they cut her off in traffic, so of course in 2022 her reaction was to point a firearm at them. He pointed a firearm in return, and shot at her.

He hit her vehicle, but not her.

A Tuscaloosa Police officer was in the parking lot at the time and heard the shots. The officer confronted the man and took him into custody. After investigating what happened, Figgers was taken into custody and charged with menacing. Her bond was set for $1,000.

It was determined that the man who fired the shots acted in self defense and was not charged.

So instead of being happy that she didn't get in an accident, and going about her business, she has damage to her car and was arrested.

I miss civilization.

“A Special Kind of Evil”

According to The Left, keeping violent criminals in jail is unfair. It is certainly unfair to the victims. #22: Man accused of setting 'Walking Man' on fire has been AWOL from 2 felony cases for 15 months, court records show - CWB Chicago

He poured gasoline on the head of a "well-known homeless man," known as Walking Man, in River North (at the Trump Tower loading dock) and set him on fire.

Joseph Guardia, the man who police say set a well-known homeless man on fire in River North last week, has been wanted by authorities since February 2021 when he stopped showing up in court for two felony burglary cases in the suburbs, court records show.

Guardia is the 22nd person accused of killing or shooting — or trying to shoot or kill — someone in Chicago this year while awaiting trial for a felony. The alleged crimes involve at least 50 victims, 11 of whom died.

Say it again. 11 people have died on the altar of Social Justice just in 2022 in Chicago. What would the count be if you looked at all the other cities and states that consider holding people on bail to be unfair?

This will soon be a 1st degree murder case.

Joseph Kromelis, 75, was on fire for about three minutes before security guards extinguished the flames, Assistant State’s Attorney Danny Hanichak said. Hanichak, a prosecutor for 16 years, told Judge Charles Beach he had never seen video footage as horrific as the attack on Kromelis. Doctors believe Kromelis’ injuries are not survivable, he said.

At least they are finally holding him, after he killed someone. ‘A special kind of evil’: No bail for man who allegedly set ‘Walking Man’ on fire.

The suburban man who poured gasoline on the head of Joseph “Walking Man” Kromelis and set it afire near a Trump Tower loading dock told police he did it because he is an “angry person,” prosecutors said Monday.

There is at least one real prosecutor left in the Illinois State's Attorney's office for Cook County, Danny Hanichak.

“It takes a special kind of evil to do what this defendant did,” Hanichak said. “Leaving him to burn alive for three minutes.”

While there has always been evil in the world, the fabric of civilization seems to be wearing thin, to the point where evil is free to do more harm.

Storms From My Eyes

From Eric Alper we get Blues Rising Star ANGELIQUE FRANCIS Rides the Current of Human Connection with ‘Long River’ Album.

Blues traditions are at the heart of all of the songs, but there are also intriguing genre bends towards Soul, Folk, Jazz, Gospel, and Rock along the way. Francis’ versatile, soulful, and evocative vocals anchor the trip, conjuring up reminiscences of Big Mama Thornton, Koko Taylor, Aretha, Bessie Smith, and more. And it’s the mixture of genres and influences running through Long River — and the sense of everything and everyone being connected — that anchor the key concept Francis wanted to convey with her new album.

There is something moving about the smoky quality of her voice. Angelique Francis is truly a great blues singer.

And unlike most music from 2022, there are real instruments playing real music, and I cannot hear a touch of AutoTune.

This is "Storms From My Eyes" by Angelique Francis from her March 2022 album Long River.

They Were Promised Equality

From the Other McCain: ‘Equality’ and the Murderous Losers

And when they notice that not everyone is equal, they snap.

The point is that the “dominant ideology” in our culture (i.e., liberalism) does seem to “guarantee” equality. Of course, no such thing as “equality” has ever existed in human history — we are, by our very nature, keenly attuned to social hierarchy — and so the losers receive no coherent explanation of their status as losers. The cultural narrative of the “dominant ideology” is essentially a lie, but anyone who contradicts the narrative is denounced as a Thought Criminal, a proponent of “hate,” as if lying to people were an act of love.

I love the description of Eliot Rodger:

His final video was a shocking irony: Here he is, sitting in the BMW his parents gave him, with the glorious scenery of sunny California behind him, declaring that his “suffering” was the justification for murdering random strangers.

It is worth a few minutes of your time.
