What could possibly go wrong? Anthropic Is Building a Predictive Surveillance System to Monitor Activists - The American Prospect

Job postings and interviews with senior security officials at Anthropic show that the frontier AI lab is building out an extensive monitoring system to keep tabs on activists who oppose the rapid development of artificial intelligence.

How are they finding people? Why through the press, media, social media, etc. In effect, they are spying on everyone looking for people who disagree with their business model.

The article is long, but here is where they reference their "Pre-crime" division, as in the Tom Cruise movie.

This kind of pre-crime policing, encouraged without due process, is referenced as an explicit goal by Anthropic’s security program manager in the podcast reviewed by the Prospect. “The goal would be transforming operations from reactive information to gathering proactive and predictive and preventative threat engagement and management,” he said, adding, “That’s the kind of operational maturity that makes sense for protecting high-value targets in any industry.”

They are not going to wait for people to actually break the law, they are going to sick the cops on them based on what they say, which is seems they have already done. You will be silenced, if you disagree with them.

Lindsey Stirling is an artist whose music I have loved for a long time. (At least a decade.) ARKAI is an "electroacoustic duo." One plays the violin, the other plays the cello. They apparently went to Juilliard together.

The music fits together very well.

This song is "King of Coins" by ARKAI & Lindsey Stirling. It was released 9 September as a video on YouTube. This is just the audio. I find most "official videos" distracting, and this one is more distracting than usual. It is easy enough to find if you are interested.

A Government Program Ahead of Schedule

Speaking of the Nevada Security Site Advisory Board, we’re going to be closing up shop at the end of fiscal year 2027 since the environmental management & remediation that we’re providing oversight for is almost done, a year ahead of schedule. I’m going to miss being on the NSSAB; it’s been very educational in quite a few ways.

A new Justice Department report reveals that FBI personnel opened investigations into two Catholic priests, conducted surveillance tied to the Richmond Catholic Memo, and continued revising the memo after headquarters ordered it deleted.

The report reveals how an investigation into a violent extremist led to the surveillance of clergy affiliated with traditional Catholicism, though the FBI ultimately concluded the priests posed no national security threat. The report also sheds new light on internal disputes on the reliability of the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Rule of Law? We don't need no Rule of Law at the FBI. We do what we damned well please.

Although an FBI review found serious analytical failures and directed that the staff be “admonished,” Richmond field office leadership defended the employees involved, and later gave them positive performance evaluations, according to the Weaponization Working Group report.

The new report, however, gives the final word: “The FBI personnel involved in the creation of the Richmond Catholic Memo have been terminated from their positions.”

They surveilled priests and parishioners and were caught red-handed. There was no legitimate reason to do any of that, no legal predicate, no reasonable suspicion that any crime was being committed. Former FBI Director Christopher Wray lied to Congress, pretending to be upset about it, and claimed that activity was shut down and that it was limited to only one field office in Richmond, VA.

Now we’re discovering it was worse than we thought.

Chicago Teachers Union in a State of Panic

I would like to say you can take that in both meanings of the word, but while I believe the State of Illinois should be described as a "state of panic," the politicians running the state, or running the state into the ground, are not panicking enough. CORE stands for Caucus of Rank-and-File Educators, and it is currently the faction in charge of the CTU.

The union faces public controversy, member-led litigation, and congressional scrutiny over its failure to release audited financial reports for five consecutive years. Following legal and political pressure, the CTU released backdated audits; however, serious questions remain regarding omitted data, missing financial transparency, and the massive allocation of union dues toward political activism rather than direct member representation.

Five years is a long time, not to release audited financial statements. I worked for Fortune 100 companies that could close the books on a year, by January 15th, and produce an audited financial report before the end of the first quarter. Chicago Teachers Union is less complicated than any of those businesses. So what is the problem?

The union is suing, and being sued by, the Illinois Policy Institute and the Liberty Justice Center. The CTU is claiming defamation, the other organizations are suing over the lack of financial transparency. But that is really just the sideshow.

Citywide, public support for the CTU has dropped significantly. An Illinois Policy Institute poll found that only 27.5 percent of Chicago voters hold a favorable opinion of the union, while 53.6 percent view it unfavorably. For every voter with a favorable view, two view the union negatively, and over 50 percent of voters report being less likely to support candidates backed by CTU money. This decline in popularity is producing a consistent trail of electoral defeats since Brandon Johnson’s election in 2023.

Click thru for details. The one that most caught my eye is that the budget for Chicago Public Schools, and by extension the CTU, keeps going up, despite the fact that enrollment has been going down for a number of years. And don't ask about test scores.

Do I expect anything to get better in Chicago education? No. I expect that the schools will still consume an ever-larger part of Chicago taxes, despite shrinking enrollment, and I expect that Chicago schools will fail to educate Chicago students.

Student Essays on First Exposure to Firearms

Every year that Professor Yamane teachs (runs?) his seminar on the Sociology of Guns, he posts some of the student essays, if they grant him permission to do so. They are usually interesting. We have 2 such essays today.

The first meeting of the seminar is actually a field trip to a local range. (If I remember, they actually go in small groups, which helps with safety, and the length of time the students are just standing around.) Students must attend the field trip, but they do not have to shoot any of the firearms.

This essay is their reaction to field trip. The majority of students, even at a university in South Carolina, have no experience with firearms. A few identified themselves as having "a small amount" of experience, and only 2 identified themselves as having "significant experience with firearms."

First up we have Hannah: “The more we did it, the more natural it became”

My first time ever holding a gun was only a week before visiting the shooting range with my group. Before visiting, I was filled with anxiety. I wasn’t expecting this, even though I grew up in Florida and was constantly surrounded by talk of guns. Even holding one made me nervous because I had never touched one before.

Next, we have Robert: “The smell, recoil, and weight of the firearm quickly bring you to reality”

Entering the range today, I had very little prior experience with guns. My knowledge and perspective of guns were influenced by video games (Call of Duty) and the news. These video games fueled a small fascination with guns that was never fully realized.

Unlike years past, I am facing an interesting dynamic right now: The reflections were collectively the best set I have received, but the students are collectively more reluctant to share them than ever. If I don’t post as many range reflections as I have in previous years, this is why.

And you should be reading Light Over Heat with Professor David Yamane. It is usually an interesting read, even when the Professor and I disagree about something. We actually agree about more than you might think, but then I disagree with the NRA about a lot of things as well.

Life Means Nothing in 2026

He shot his cousin, several times, over an argument about enchiladas. Wut?

Police said Ervin Gutierrez, 22, and Nathaniel Cavazos, 25, were at an an apartment, drinking at dinner and got into a fight over the heat of the green chile on enchiladas they were eating. After the fight, Gutierrez, 22, pulled out a handgun and shot Cavazos several times, killing him.

Gutierrez is charged with one count of murder.

I miss living in a civilized society. OK, so it has been stuck in drafts for a few days. It is still worth thinking about.

Don't Get Involved in Road Rage

Hayden Foster, 36, from Alabama, told police that after he passed Perez on the interstate, Perez started following close behind and flashing his lights.

As vehicles arrived in Nashville, both stopped in the far left lane near Spring Street and Foster said Perez got out of a Honda CRV and walked toward his pickup truck with his right hand kept behind his back.

Foster shot several rounds, and drove a short distance before stopping and calling police. Perez drove himself to a hospital, and was then taken to a trauma center.

Police took a .22 caliber handgun from Foster, and found a knife on the ground near where the shooting took place.

A .22 caliber pistol wouldn't be my first choice, if they are talking about .22 LR, but they don't specify exactly what cartridge was involved. Is .223 considered .22 caliber? After all, .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire is built around .224 bullets. I'm sure Professional Journalists™ would call a .223 pistol an evil assault rifle, even if it was a pistol. As for the choice of caliber... to each his own. (5.7mm is .2244 inches)

After talking with the District Attorney's Office, police decided not to press charges for now while the investigation continues.

Self-defense is a human right, and this took place in Nashville, Tennessee, not anywhere in Massachusetts. I'm going to call this Good Guys 1, Bad Guys 0.

Playing “Tactical Clue” in the Civilian Gun Training Industry, rather than imagining the typical counter-ambush (defensive) scenario in his gun training classes, Gabe Suarez suggests students prepare mentally and physically for a counter-terrorist (offensive) scenario.

In that post I love the quote:

“We live in a time of war,” Suarez tells his students. We never know when we will be sitting around, minding our own business, and then hear, “Aloha snack bar!”

That is essentially the position Jordan Salinas found himself in. He was minding his own business and suddenly he was in the middle of a mass shooting incident.

None of this is about banning fun. It's about educating people on the rules. Rules designed to keep kids from being killed. Because right now, kids are riding vehicles capable of highway speeds with zero training, zero insurance, and zero legal accountability. They're transitioning from sidewalks to the road, tearing across intersections, and if something goes wrong, it's a life-changing event for that kid.

One of the points he makes is that a standard bicycle helmet is not a substitute for a motorcycle helmet at 50 MPH.

In the moment, you did the only thing you could do. Somebody's coming through a locked door at 2 in the morning. You don't know who it is. You don't know what he wants. And you've got about a second and a half to decide whether your family sees the sun come up. So, you decide, and then the deputies leave and the tape comes down, and you're standing in the same kitchen, the same hallway, the same entryway where it happened. And you realize you have to go to bed tonight in that house and tomorrow night and every night after that.

Your LG Smart Television IS Spying on you

Not maybe. Not perhaps. LG smart TVs caught logging audio with screen off and snooping on local devices - Notebookcheck News

An investigation by Gamers Nexus found LG smart TVs sweep local networks to map phones and nearby devices. Tests also showed the sets can capture microphone audio with the screen off — they then upload data once reconnected to the internet.

They map all devices in your home by monitoring the WiFi, even if they are not connected. They record audio collected even when they appear to be off or in standby, and are disconnected from the internet. That data will be uploaded when the internet connection is restored.

Sing, Sing, Sing

More insomnia means more late-night/early-morning video watching. One of the things I am continuously amazed by, is how little people know about music that was popular before they were in high school. It doesn't surprise me that the average kid today, or most Zoomers, and Millennials, know nothing of the Big Band era of music. But when a drummer or a drum critic doesn't know who Gene Krupa was that is just plain sad. (But then I ran across a video by one drummer who didn't know who Neil Pert was.)

Purportedly the first sticksman to use a bass drum on a recording session, big-band swing meister Gene Krupa can claim to have influenced the format of the modern drum kit. He was also instrumental in establishing the popularity of cymbals and tom-toms. Renowned for his explosive “drum battles” with Buddy Rich. [Ref. 50 Best Jazz Drummers Of All Time.]

And no, they don't know who Buddy Rich was either. (I think there are some problems with that list, but they do seem to cover everyone, and more importantly, they say why Krupa was important.)

The use of bass drum, high hat, floor toms, in addition to a snare, with drums as an integral part of the band, actually contributing to the overall feel of the song marked a change in music. That pretty much started with Big Band and Swing. And today's song, and Gene Krupa, played a major role in that.

This is "Sing, Sing, Sing (With a Swing)" by the Benny Goodman Orchestra. It is from a recording that features Gene Krupa on drums. (I think it is a 1955 recording, but I'm not sure of that.) It is probably the song that made Kruppa the star that he would go on to be.

And yes, I have featured "Sing, Sing, Sing" in the past, but that was a Louis Prima Orchestra version.

Armed Home Invasion in Canada?

What about all those lovely gun control laws? Two Arrested, Two Outstanding in Violent Brampton Home Invasion and Shooting | Peel Regional Police

Investigators from the Central Robbery Bureau have arrested and charged two individuals in connection with a violent home invasion in Brampton that left two victims with gunshot wounds.

The home invasion took place in June, and the arrests took place in July. I'm not sure why the police in The Region of Peel, in Ontario decided to produce a press release on Friday the 5th. They are asking for additional information. Surveillance video shows 3 people, and only 2 have been arrested, so that may be the reason for the release. It just seems odd that they would not have asked the public for information sooner than 3 months after the fact.

The Region of Peel is a suburb of Toronto, in Ontario, Canada.

The two people who have been arrested, one 18 years old, and one 16 years old, are charged as follows:

• Attempted Murder Using Firearm
• Aggravated Assault
• Robbery
• Disguise with Intent
• Discharge Firearm with Intent
• Unauthorized Possession of Firearm
• Possession of Property Obtained by Crime
• Fail to Comply with Sentence or Disposition (YCJA)

If you're unlucky enough to live in Canada and to have three armed individuals enter your home at 4:30 AM, you are screwed. While it is my understanding that Canada is trying to revamp its self-defense laws, for the most part you are not allowed to do anything except be a victim.

So how did the criminals have guns in the presence of gun control? Did being disarmed (for their own safety) help the two people who were shot in any way?

Woke Lanterns Writer Begs Fans for Another Chance

Why do the bad writers, and show runners in Hollywood think they deserve chances? In the 1960s through the 1990s, shows that pissed off their audiences, or never found one, got canceled in the middle of a season.

Shows didn't get commitments for 2 seasons before a single episode aired. If you didn't deliver for the advertisers, you were gone. As much as I hate ads, I think we had better shows in the '80s and '90s, and into the early 2000s, than we have today. Much better, in some cases.
