Perfect

The people who don't listen to country were happy that Beyonce did so well with a country album. The fancy people of the Grammys don't have much knowledge of the history of country music, and probably were thinking it was a good.

Let's listen to someone who actually does sing country.

The album that this song comes from debuted at #1 on the Top Country Albums chart, and it was the 4th time that Darius Rucker reached #1 with an album. And it is actually a good album.

This song is "Perfect" by Darius Rucker from his 2015 album Southern Style.

You might know Darius Rucker from his work with Hootie & the Blowfish.

I'm Shocked to Discover Corruption in Politics

No, I'm not really shocked. Politics is defined by corruption. (I'm originally from Illinois.) The Other McCain has a story about politics. BUSTED: ‘Anti-Poverty’ Democrat Activist Joe Sanberg Accused of Massive Fraud

Veteran blogger Lawrence Parson has a long post examining the (alleged) $145 million scam (allegedly) perpetrated by Joe Sanberg, who at one point was considered a “rising star” in the Democratic Party and even talked about as a potential presidential candidate. The extra use of “allegedly” in my lead is necessitated by the fact that, unlike most accused criminals I write about, Joe Sanberg has fat stacks of cash and many influential connections, so I wouldn’t want to risk a libel suit by stating as a fact that he is guilty — GUILTY! GUILTY! GUILTY!

There is a statement from the DOJ, and some info on his (alleged) partner-in-crime, now a .gov witness.

Also, isn’t America a great country? Where else can you find a Jew and an Arab cooperating in a scam to defraud Hollywood big shots of millions of dollars? (Allegedly, I hasten to add.)

Go read the whole thing.

As for Illinois. Four of the past 10 governors have gone to prison over ethics violations. Here is a more complete list. The Dishonor Roll: Meet the public officials who helped build Illinois’ culture of corruption

My favorite is Paul Powell.

There's only one thing worse than a defeated politician, and that's a broke one.

That link on Powell is to the Wiki, but it hits all the high points, including the fact that he had $800,000 in cash stashed in various places when he died in 1970. That doesn't include the $1 million worth of stock in Illinois racetracks that was determined to be the result of bribes.

Disney's Cost Cutting Ax Hits 538

The Other McCain asks Why Has the ‘Valuable Resource’ Known as 538 Been Summarily Discarded?

538, once known as FiveThirtyEight, specializes in a stastical approach to politics, which is mostly conducting and studying polling around policy and elections. It was moved around a bit, but eventually landed as part of ABC News. ABC is a division of Disney.

538 gave Hillary a 71.4% chance of winning in 2016, and in the 2024 election had Harris ahead by 6 points among likely voters.

Well, there’s a lot to work through here and I suppose the best place to begin is with ABC News claiming to offer “best-in-class polling,” to which my reply can be summarized briefly: LOL, are you kidding me?

After a bit of history of 538, and the people that started it, we get the meat of the matter. Neither 538, nor the founders of 538, though they are both still doing projections in their own ways, predicted a Trump win in 2024, even though he won the popular vote.

The fact that Trump not only won the Electoral College (as he had done in 2016) but also won the nationwide popular vote by a margin of 2.3 million votes — which he had not done in 2016 — means that predicting a Trump win in 2024 should have been easier than eight years earlier. Yet somehow these two statistical wizards managed to miss this one.

Click thru for the rest. There is quite a bit.

And Disney has woken up to the fact that it needs to stop hemorrhaging money. It axed the animation staff (or a lot of it anyway) that was responsible for the recent Moana 2 movie, even though it was one of their few successes of late.

Captain America 4 is currently in theaters. It will lose 100s of millions of dollars. Disney has recently put out there, and the access media‡ has run with the "fact," that the budget for this movie was $185 million. It was reported last year, after the 2nd round of reshoots, that the expenditures had passed $300 million. They may have budgeted $185, but they didn't live within that budget. However, even if you believe the 185 million number, and you believe that they spent a bare minimum on marketing (pay no attention to the Superbowl Ad) the movie will still lose money. It is on track to fall short of $400 million at the box office globally, and studios only get about half of the gross box office. Yes, theaters do get paid for showing films.

Next up is Rachel Zegler's Snow White. The feud between Zegler and Gal Godot is so epic that Disney has canceled some (or all) of the promotional tour and interviews. (Zegler is a "promoter" of the "Palestinian Cause™" while Gadot is a veteran of the Israeli Army.) They canceled the UK Premiere, because they are "worried" about backlash, but it could be that they know the film will bomb, and they are just saving money. (The early projections are that it will bomb.)

That will be followed up by Thunderbolts. A movie no one asked for, featuring a bunch of characters that even comic book nerds don't know, or if we do know of them, we don't like. (A gender-swapped Taskmaster, Discount Black Widow, and Red Guardian, are not the characters we were looking for.)

Then later in the year, coming to Disney+ will be Ironheart, a series about a character added into Black Panther 2, that is guaranteed to be nothing but a Girl Boss trying to take over for Iron Man/Tony Stark.

Finally, there are rumors swirling around Hollywood that Disney is trying to sell Lucasfilm. The only problem is that no one is interested in buying. Kathleen "Put a chick in it and make her gay" Kennedy has destroyed whatever value Lucasfilm once had.

‡ The "Access Media" consists of that part of the entertainment, and gaming, media that requires access to maintain their place in the world. They need invites to early screenings of movies, they need early access to video games, etc. As a result, outlets like Variety and The Hollywood Reporter are not in a hurry to question anything that the movie studios say. They will not be granted That access if they piss people off.

As I was editing this, going through the back of my mind is, "Disney isn't even the stupidest movie studio making superhero movies these days." That title has got to go to Warner Bros. They could screw up a free lunch, and it seems that is exactly what they are doing on several fronts.

Browser Recomendations Anyone?

So Firefox, my go-to browser for a very long time, has decided that they are not a browser company, but an advertising firm, dedicated to selling user info on the open market. Hand in hand with that, they have also gotten much slower.

Currently I am using LibreWolf, a browser based on Firefox that is more security and privacy focused. I'm not 100 percent convinced. I've tried Chromium (the basis of Chrome - still Google related) and Brave. Brave is interesting, but they keep trying to get me to sign up for their ad system.

There is an even more extreme version of the Firefox line of browsers, whose name escapes me at the moment, and a completely de-Googled version of Chromium yet to try. Does anyone have any thoughts?

Chrome phones home to Google. Opera phones home to Italy. The last time I had Vivaldi installed I was having some kind of problem, but I can't remember what it was at this distance. (Opera is another browser based on Chromium, and Vivaldi is a "privacy" version of Opera.) I don't believe Full Moon is supported anymore (basically a classic version of Firefox from years ago), but I haven't looked into it.

Professor Yamane at Light Over Heat has some thoughts on his gun-related research: "Gun Culture 2.0" as a Two-Edged Sword

When Seconds Count, Police Are Hours Away

Or minutes away. Either way, they will not be there instantly. The 911 system certainly isn't working the way people expect it to in many places, including Salt Lake City. ‘Why aren’t you here?’: Reality of 911 responses don’t always meet expectations in Salt Lake City

A drunk driver, in a park hit at least one vehicle and was driving toward people. Response time 14 minutes.

A woman was attacked near her car, managed to escape and call 911. Response time 3 hours and 23 minutes.

There are explanations of how 911 works, how many calls per month, high-priority versus non-emergency calls. There is also a note that the PD is about down 5% from the number of officers they are authorized to have.

Statements from the powers that be. Plans to hire, and plans to use non-police officers for some calls. But it all comes down to a system struggling.

It should be noted that the 14 minute response time is better than average for police response to a 911 call in that city. A lot of bad things can happen in 14 minutes, even if you can call 911 before the bad things start happening.

While there are some statistics, on non-emergency calls that still require a police response, there are not many statistics on the call center. Do they have trouble with calls that shouldn't go to 911? Are they short of staff?

I read a lot of stories about 911 response times, and 911 call centers. The one overriding public response is that it doesn't work the way people think it does. Your call may not be answered immediately. The police will not be there immediately.

Even ambulance response is a problem today, because the pay doesn't make sense for EMTs in the light of job stress. The perennial problem is that government and insurance don't pay enough for covered ambulance rides, so there are never enough ambulances, and EMTs quit the job a lot - see the comment on pay + stress above. Then there is the fact that ambulances spend a lot of time waiting at hospitals. (They can't respond to your call, if the patient from the last call is still in the ambulance waiting for hospital staff.)

I don't know if the 911 system is broken or braking, but I think a large part of the problem is unrealistic expectations on the part of the public. Utah is a Constitutional Carry state, having joined that club in 2021. Before that they had (still have) a system of concealed carry permits for both residents of the state, and people traveling to that state. But the gun-hating part of the Left says, you don't need a gun, just call 911. They don't talk so much about the 14 minute wait for help.

Calling 911 is a fine thing to do, but you might want to check on how long, on average, you might expect to wait in your area for the Police/Fire/EMS to respond. And then you should remember that is the average response.

Boston Mayor: We're Sorry Knife -Wielding Attacker Was Stopped by Off-Duty Cop

And the head of the PD was in on that as well. Are we surprised that a couple of Democrats are sorry about stopping crime? Boston mayor, top cop criticized after offering condolences to family of armed man shot by officer

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu and Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox are under attack on social media for their response to the deadly officer-involved shooting in the heart of the city on Saturday.

Both Wu and Cox offered condolences to the family of a knife-wielding man who was shot dead by an off-duty officer after he allegedly tried to attack customers inside a Chick-fil-A on Boylston Street on Saturday night.

Yes, it is just shame that he was not able to complete his attack, but instead was shot and killed, thus saving lives, just not his own. Or maybe not.

The city leaders made the comments after the armed suspect, identified as 32-year-old Lemark Jaramillo, chased two people into the popular eatery around 5:30 p.m.

An off-duty officer who happened to be in the restaurant tried to de-escalate the situation, but the suspect allegedly refused to comply, prompting the officer to fatally shoot the man.

Tone deaf. Out of touch. Soft on crime. These are few phrases that come to mind.

Hollywood's Creative Bankruptcy Marches On

Hollywood, having no ability to create something new, is going to reboot some old TV shows. Do the kids today even know these shows?

Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Land of the Giants, and The Time Tunnel are going to be dusted off, and "updated with modern sensibilities." That doesn't sound good.

And be fair... these shows, with the possible exception of Voyage, were not that good. Dave Cullen describes Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea as "Star Trek, under water." That may be fair, but it still doesn't mean that a "modern take" is needed, or will work.

This is The Dave Cullen Show video Hollywood’s Endless Cycle of Remakes

... a kind of cultural strip mining or scavenging of classic sci-fi shows.

I have long been convinced that Hollywood is not capable of doing anything new. This doesn't change that one bit. The video is 6 minutes long.

Consider the Oscars. I don't even know what all films were nominated but for Best Picture, but I have heard...

  • Anora is like Showgirls sponsored by OnlyFans
  • Dune, parts 1 and 2 suffer being genre; Hollywood HATES genre films. (Some Academy members couldn't be bothered to watch Dune, Part 2.)

Actually Anora sounds more like Pretty Woman with disapproving parents, but I haven't seen the movie.

What If You Called 911 and Waited for an Hour for Someone to Answer the Call?

Once they answer the call, then you have to wait for police to actually arrive. L.A. Influencer Calls 911 for Burglary, Waits Nearly an Hour for Response

The bureaucrats are saying, "Of course that's not true," but Lovett was on speakerphone and his neighbors stopped by see what was going on.

Lovett maintains that he has witnesses who can verify his version of events. Several neighbors, who arrived to assist him, were present while he made the call on speakerphone, he said. According to Lovett, an automated recording first informed him he was on hold, then advised of high call volume and warned him not to hang up.

"There was absolutely no human being that we heard from, until 59 minutes," he said.

Calling 911 is a fine thing to do, but help will not arrive immediately. You should have a plan for what you will do while you wait.

The New York Times Doesn't Want to Be Bothered about Facts

All the better to look down their noses. It isn't correct, but don't expect them to admit that. From Professor David Yamane: Getting Past the "Duck Dynasty" Stereotype of Gun Owners

While the NY Slimes is awake to the fact that new gun owners are more diverse than ever, they still have some facts to catch up on.

In an otherwise fascinating and well-reported story on the changing face of gun owners in America today, the authors include a significant misstatement. They write, “a majority of gun owners are white, conservative, male and from rural areas.”

This “Duck Dynasty” stereotype of gun owners is one I have challenged for years now, from my 2019 presentation on Gun Culture 2.0 to my recent opinion essay in The Hill on the unrecognized diversity of gun owners.

You are entitled to your own opinions, but the NYT wants to have its own facts.

Are politically conservative white men from rural areas overrepresented among gun owners relative to their portion of the population? Bullseye!

Are they “a majority of gun owners”? Not by a long shot.

Read the whole thing.

A group of clumsy woke protestors drilled holes in hundreds of SUV tyres in an attack on 'fossil fuel death machines', not realising they were actually damaging electric vehicles.

This took place in the village of Scorrier, in Cornwall, England, about 45 miles west of Plymouth, or about 230 miles west-southwest of London.

Two of the Illegal Aliens that the Left is Wringing Hands Over

On the run for 20 about years, and ICE finds them in 2 months? Trump tops 50,000 migrant removals including fugitives who evaded justice for 20 years | Daily Mail Online

When immigration agents were first ordered to deport Ivan Oramas and Santos Maradiaga-Villalta, President George W. Bush was in the White House and the iPhone was a distant dream.

That was over two decades ago—yet both men were arrested this week, according to federal data reviewed by DailyMail.com.

Oramas, 61, has convictions for sexual battery and aggravated assault. He was ordered to be deported in 2003. Maradiaga-Villalta, 40, was convicted for smuggling aliens into the U.S. He was ordered to be deported in 2006.

It's amazing what can happen when you let cops enforce the law.

They were among over 50,000 illegal immigrants removed so far, a Department of Homeland Security official revealed to DailyMail.

At least the DailyMail is using the term "illegal."

Arkansas Is NOT a Place to Run from Police

The directive to Arkansas State Police, is that if they flee, put them in the ditch.

The district attorneys of the State of Arkansas had a meeting with the Arkansas State Police. They issued a joint statement via YouTube, which said, in part...

We will pursue you, we will stop you, and the men and women standing behind me will prosecute you.

This is their video ARKANSAS STATE POLICE & STATE PROSECUTORS UNITE TO COMBAT FLEEING SUSPECTS - Troopers will stop you

When I am having bouts of insomnia, I watch more than my fair share of police chases. More than a few are from Arkansas, in part because they publish them to YouTube in fairly short order, but also because the (for the most part) include speed, location and other data in the video. And because ASP doesn't F- around. If you run from ASP, you will end up in the ditch, 999 times out of 1000. No, they aren't perfect.

Despite this, the number of people who try to run from police is growing. One of the people in the video mentions the stats for one police district.

Here are a few videos of ASP pursuits That I've looked at in the past year or so.

The moral of the story is, don't run from Arkansas State Police, and if you're ever driving through Arkansas keep an eye on the rear view mirror, because you never know what will be coming up behind you. (If the pursuit does come up behind you, merge to the right.)

Road rage is such an insane way to spend your energy. This is also another failure of the victim-selection process. Person shot in road rage incident facing charges

It isn't clear to me why the road rage incident started, because the person who got shot pulled in front of the van driven by a disabled guy, with three kids inside the van.

The van had cameras, front and back, so cops have complete documentation of everything that happened.

Investigators say Bain’s vehicle first break-checked the van causing the driver to go around. After that Bain allegedly began chasing after the van, continually trying to cut the van off. While on Taylor Blvd., Bain’s vehicle rammed into the van during this chase which ended on Carlisle Avenue when the van’s tires were flattened, disabling it.

The video shows Bain then allegedly rammed the disabled van with the man and three kids inside nearly flipping it over.

At that point, the driver of the van, who was armed, shot the aggressor one time in the stomach.

That person was to be arraigned on Friday, despite being in the hospital.

How Is That Criminal Justice Reform Working Out?

They won't hold this guy until he actually kills someone. Ordered deported in 2022, migrant is on probation for gun possession and charged with beating his ex-girlfriend. But judges refuse to keep him in jail. - CWB Chicago

A Venezuelan migrant who was ordered deported in 2022 is living in Chicago where he is now on probation for possessing a loaded ghost gun and on pretrial release for allegedly battering his ex-girlfriend repeatedly over the course of several days, according to court records. Prosecutors asked judges in both cases to keep Pedro Colmenares in jail as a safety risk. Both judges denied those requests.

So domestic violence is not enough. Gun charges - I thought so-called ghost guns were extra-scary - are also not enough. Maybe ICE can take him off the street.
