Armed Citizen Stops Mass Shooting

He opened fire on people in a neighborhood near a bus stop. He killed 3 and injured one. Then a neighbor stepped up.

The people who lost their lives are on the mind of neighbors on Pennington, where the gunman shot and tried to kill a fourth victim, but neighbors fought back. Detroit Police describe the man as an 80-year-old. He and his dog were shot but survived.

“He saw my weapon and he went from predator to prey. He had that look of shock,” said a neighbor who grabbed his gun and shot back, to protect his elderly neighbor.

“The neighbor, he fired a shot and the guy turned around and took off. He scattered like a jack rabbit,” said Wallace Pleasant, who witnessed it.

They don't say how long this took, but it was probably a couple of minutes or so. What is 911 response time in Detroit? I know it is better than it was, but how many people would have died if "call 911 and wait for help" was the ONLY option?

Disturbing Impacts of School Closures on Education

Teachers don't want to teach. Not in person anyway. Republicans blame Democrats, union bosses for fastest drop in nine-year-olds' learning in 50 years - as more kids REPEAT grades as DC schools ban unvaccinated students

• Math scores among third grade students dropped five points from 2020 to 2022 and reading scores dropped seven
• Reading scores saw their largest drop in three decades and math scores fell for the first time since records began
• 'Actual science didn't support school closures. Democrats were too busy following political science to care,' said Rep. Guy Reschenthaler, R-Pa.

Pediatricians were calling for schools to reopen in 2020.

In June of 2020, the American Academy of Pediatrics strongly recommended that students attend school in person. However, as late as January 2022, teachers' unions were still promoting remote learning. That's despite clear indications of the detriment to students’ mental and academic fitness.

Under the Biden Administration, the CDC allowed the American Federation of Teachers to modify official guidance and ensure many schools did not fully reopen.

The result has been to DEVASTATE a generation of school kids.

As I have said before, if an education is the way out of poverty, then the teachers, and the Left generally, want another generation dependent on government handouts.

Norupo

Heilung is a group that borrows very heavily from Norse folk music. This together with the theatrics - Maria Franz has some of the best corpse-paint of any singer on the Metal circuit - appeals to me. And they do sing at Metal festivals. One of their first public performances was at Midgardsblot Metalfestival in 2017.

And even though they do sing at Metal festivals, I don't hear them as Metal. So here we are on a Saturday morning.

Someone Associated With this Show Couldn't Find a Negative Review

They apparently don't have access to the internet. CHRISTOPHER STEVENS reviews The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power | Daily Mail Online

I haven't seen The Rings of Power, and I probably won't see it. I've been a fan of Tolkien's work for close to 50 years. I won't pay to watch it bastardized. But more on that later.

Turkey is not the word. No turkey, however bloated and stupid, could ever be big enough to convey the mesmerising awfulness of Amazon's billion dollar Tolkien epic.

This is a disaster dragon – plucked, spatchcocked, with a tankerload of Paxo^‡ stuffed up its fundament, roasted and served with soggy sprouts.

The cretins in Hollywood don't have the creativity to produce anything new, so they feel it is incumbent on them to shit all over beloved franchises to tell "their stories." Are they going to do Shakespeare next? I wouldn't be surprised.

There's no doubt we can see the budget. It casts a throbbing glow over the screen like a chestful of gold. Ultra-high definition computer graphics paint ivory cities in mountain passes and conjure gigantic monsters in palaces of dark magic.

But magnificent visuals are meaningless if nobody knows who the audience is meant to be. And it's impossible to guess whether The Rings Of Power is meant for children, for hardcore fans or for general viewers – because it fails them all.

Grace Randolph, at Beyond The Trailer calls Galadriel, the main protagonist of the show, incredibly unlikable. That is on top of the fact she says that it feels like sections of the story are missing. That they censored a story like Game of Thrones to get a "G" rating, but just cut out bits. They didn't fill in with anything like a story. She said it feels like there is no story. And I'm not even sure how independent Grace Randolph is as a reviewer.

And Grace Randolph doesn't come close to what Nerdrotic has had to say, and he hasn't even gotten his official review published. Gary at Nerdrotic drove to see the in-theater opening 3 hours from his home. What was his gut reaction, after that? "It's bad."

As far as my love of Tolkien's works go... I was given a copy of Lord of the Rings for Christmas when I was about 13 or 14. I have owned the BBC radio dramatization (something like 15 cassette tapes), the unabridged audio book (20-some CDs), the movies, (both the theatrical edition, and the extended edition Blu-Ray.) etc. While I don't currently have a copy of The Silmarillion, I've owned that in past. The only one of the books I don't care for is The Hobbit, and to be fair I probably have not read that in 40 years.

I was Okay with the changes that Peter Jackson made in his movies: the omission of Tom Bombadill, the changes to Boromir's story, the unwinding of stories told in flashback, and that Strider was carrying around a sword he could actually fight with. But Peter Jackson tried to bring Tolkien's work to the screen, to tell the story Tolkien wrote. Jackson could tell his own story another time. He has told other stories.

I fully expect that the Woke scolds in Hollywood will decide that they need to update Shakespeare. After all they are making a Robin Hood TV show where Robin is a black female. That should be "wonderful." Or awful. I'm sure she will also be a Mary Sue.

They Tried to Break Into an Occupied Home

Two would-be bad guys try to break into a home that is occupied. The homeowner confronted the two miscreants and one of them pepper-sprayed her. She opened fire.

One of the suspects was severely injured and transported to the hospital in critical condition, the sheriff’s office said. The other suspect walked off with unknown injuries.

You could say they suffered a breakdown of the victim-selection process.

Good Thing There Are Still Cops in NYC

The 23-year-old victim was walking on Dyckman Street near the corner of Vermilyea Avenue in Inwood at around 2:10 p.m. when a man he knows came up from behind and started wailing on him, according to cops and surveillance video shared with The Post.

An intense fight ensued, footage showed, and the 22-year-old attacker eventually got out a knife he had hidden in his clothes and stabbed the victim as the two spilled off the sidewalk, according to police.

When the attacker drew a knife and started stabbing him, he ran into the street, and right into a car of undercover police.

So will this guy spend any time in jail? Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg has sent people to jail ahead of trial. For defending themselves. Actual criminals don't seem to go to jail.

A dispute? Try to kill someone. Worried about cameras, or daylight, or witnesses? Don't be silly. Nothing will happen to this guy. He hadn't even been officially charged when the Post published this article. I wouldn't be surprised if the DA only charges him with a misdemeanor, though I hope that doesn't happen.

A store manager who works near the incident had this to say.

“This area’s not known to be that violent but crime is definitely on the uptick,” he said. “I don’t know whether it’s because people don’t have money or they were used to getting everything for free during the pandemic.”

Or it could be they have figured out that NYC, New York State, Alvin Bragg and a bunch of other folks have seen to it that there are NO consequences for bad behavior.

Civilization was nice while it lasted.

A disturbing list. How many examples of... "surprise" illness or death announcements have there been in recent weeks? It seems like there has been a lot.

Im just listing what I can dig up. It could be anything. There's a lot of different diseases out there.

News stories, F*c*book posts, and a few stories where the cause of death is known. But a lot of "mysterious deaths."

Feminist Hollywood and Unlikable Female Characters

I've seen a couple of videos recently about how Feminist Hollywood in their effort to promote "Strong Female Character" (as Critical Drinker would say) have produced a bunch of trash.

The video I saw most recently - though it is the oldest is from Comix Division: Unlikable Female Protagonist Gets A Trigger Warning? Because people are distressed that a woman would be portrayed as ANYTHING but perfect.

That's right folks. Apparently society has become so fragile, that the mere presence of an unlikable female protagonist is enough to cause people emotional damage.

Think about this folks. 200,000 years of human evolution, fighting and crawling our way to the top of the food-chain, and THIS is the culmination of that struggle. We are SO fucked.

Of course Comix Division is not the only person to notice the "all female characters must be perfect" rule. Critical Drinker's review of the live-action Mulan pointed out that the character faced no struggle. She was a perfect fighter from day one, able to defeat anyone, despite being smaller in an arena where physical strength actually matters. In the animated Mulan the character faces that struggle, perseveres and overcomes - to the best of her ability. But that means that she was weak to begin with, and that is not allowed. We won't get those kickass women heroes any other way. Or do you think Marvel and DC can figure this sh*t out on their own?

This is Sydney Watson's video The failure of feminist Hollywood, in which Sydney details all of the ways female protagonists have failed in the past several years.

In typing up this post, I was reminded of The Saga of the Renunciates by Marion Zimmer Bradley. There is a scene in one of the novels (it is a 3-novel omnibus edition) where a man asks one of the renunciates (women who have forsworn traditional roles in a traditional society) what does she do when faced with a task that requires more physical strength than she has. She answers by saying, that she does exactly what a man does - ask for help to lift the parcel/whatever. The first book in that trilogy was written in 1976, and the last in 1984, though I really only like the first 2 entries in that particular trilogy. Those women were more relatable, more appealing, and still stronger in 1976 than any female character coming out of Hollywood in the past 5 years.

Bobby Fischer Won the World Chess Championship 50 Years Ago

"Match of the Century" was how it was dubbed in the press.

If you were alive in 1972, and old enough to watch TV, you knew about this match. It was the height of the Cold War. The defending champion from the Soviet Union, Boris Spassky was meeting the winner of the Candidates Tournament, American Bobby Fischer. It inspired a lot of Americans to learn chess, at least a little.

The match was held in Reykjavík, Iceland. Fischer held the lead with 11.5 points to Spassky's 8.5 points. (1 point for a win, and 0.5 points for a draw.) 12.5 points were needed to win the match.

The 21st game of the match started on August 31st.

After he had navigated the masses and made it to the board, Fischer played his favored Sicilian Defense, but not the variation that had gotten him crushed in game 11. He went with the Taimanov Variation (by transposition) instead. Coincidentally, Fischer had swept its namesake, GM Mark Taimanov, 6-0 on the road to Reykjavik. After starting his Candidates run against Taimanov, Fischer was about to use his opening to finish the job.

The switch proved justified. After seven moves, Spassky was already off balance.

The game was adjourned at the 41st move. Black White (Spassky) sealed his move with the authority, and it was to be made when the match was resumed. Spassky resigned by telephone on 1 September 1972.

It's the end of the most awaited match in chess history, the culmination of a fulminating trajectory for the American genius towards the world title. His greatest life goal had been achieved. To the dismay of all chess lovers, however, he would not play another chess game until 1992, against the same Spassky.

Fischer enjoyed some of the celebrity that surrounded his win. He even made an appearance on Johnny Carson's The Tonight Show in November of that year. After that he disappears from the world of chess.

Except for his 1992 rematch with Spassky and a few other aberrations, that status remains true until his death in 2008. Additionally, what few public appearances do occur reveal a broken soul at best and a raging anti-Semite at worst.

But in 1972 he was famous across America. There is even a movie about chess, Searching for Bobby Fischer which is pretty good. (It is not about Fischer.) I like the other movie about chess a bit more, Fresh, but I'm not sure how well-known either is.

The key part of the story is that he was the "ex-boyfriend." He apparently had a problem with that, because he showed up at the family home of his ex-girlfriend and broke in. It was a bad decision.

The door is eventually forced open and three gunshots ring out, sending Rayl fleeing, the clip shows.

The 22-year-old makes his way down the porch steps and walks a short distance before collapsing in the middle of a sun-dappled pathway.

He was told to go away. He was told that one person inside the home was armed. He disregarded all of that and broke the door open. What did he think was going to happen?

“Dad, is he trying to kill me?” the woman could be heard saying.

After Duckro shoots at Rayl, his daughter is heard telling him, “Dad, there’s nothing you could have done. You saved my life,” according to the station.

Ohio has a Stand Your Ground law, which encompasses the Castle Doctrine. A grand jury refused to return an indictment of the father under those circumstances.

As for the relatives of the dead guy, they are upset because the fatal shot hit him in the back, but we can't see if the view was obstructed. The family is "demanding justice," but given the lack of narrative-support, this will not be a national story with riots and/or mostly-peaceful protests. Also, expecting to have to deal with the consequences of actions - clearly spelled out consequences - is a 20th Century idea.

Self-defense, and defense of family is a human-right.

Fewer Police Mean Longer Waits for 911 Response

Add Denver to the list of cities where there are not enough police officers. Did we really expect any other outcome?

Since 2018, response times for the highest priority calls, like those for shootings, have increased nearly 3 minutes and is now about 14 1/2 minutes.

Denver Police Chief Paul Pazen said he's deeply concerned by the increase in response times, which he described as a supply-and-demand problem: Too much demand for police services and too few cops on the street.

But it was just recently that cities across the country decided that it was a good idea to defund the police, and have fewer officers. And I just recently saw yet another video about how people should not call police. So how can there be a shortage? <sarcasm/> And about the same time a bunch of people decided that they don't want to be police. Between the lack of recruits and the increase rush for the exits of retirement, and resignation, well...

Strangely the article doesn't talk about defunding the police, or why the department is about 15% short of its authorized headcount.

I can't even pretend to be shocked that there is a shortage of officers.

Two men were arrested on Thursday and Friday in connection with the murder of 9-year-old Olivia Pratt-Korbel this week, who was shot to death at her family's home in northwestern England on Monday evening, police said.

A 33-year-old man and a 36-year-old man were arrested on suspicion of murder, as well as two counts of attempted murder, but were both were released on bail. The 36-year-old, however, was later returned to prison for violating the terms of his license, which is similar to probation.

Why were they released? Because to do otherwise would be unfair, of course.

"After a careful review of the facts, evidence, and applicable case law, this Office determined that it could not meet its ethical burden of “beyond a reasonable doubt”, as Mr. Cutchall was acting in self-defense," District Attorney spokesman Kyle King wrote in a statement.

This incident took place in June, so the DA moved fairly quickly to make this determination.

While in this case the "person you know" was a close relative. When the Left talks about people you know, they want to you think of close relatives, but you know the creep who hangs out at your favorite coffee shop, or the coworker who has decided that you are his soulmate, and other people who are not you siblings. Violent stalkers, ex-boyfriends, estranged spouses, etc. The list is quite long. Of course the relationships are only highlighted by the media when it is something like the one in this incident.

Self-defense is a human-right. It might even be your legal right in Pennsylvania.

I Really Do Agree With CISA Quite Often

Even if I think they have the worst logo I've seen in decades, and believe that they were named by the Department of Redundancy Department of the US government. CISA: Prepare now for quantum computers, not when hackers use them

Bask in the 1950s retro-style charm of the CISA logo, and consider that the the full name is the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. (I guess security is really important, since they included it twice, and everything.)

Although quantum computing is not commercially available, CISA (Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency) urges organizations to prepare for the dawn of this new age, which is expected to bring groundbreaking changes in cryptography, and how we protect our secrets.

The agency published a paper earlier in the week [last week now], calling for leaders to start preparing for the migration to stronger secret guarding systems, exploring risk mitigation methods, and participating in developing new standards.

Not that executives will do anything. They won't even update servers/software, adopt 2-factor authentication, network segmentation, or any number of things in the face of ransomware attacks that they can SEE have cost other businesses hundreds of millions of dollars. "We're too small" or "we can't afford it" or whatever bit of denial that is prevalent today.

Experts in the field widely accept that the currently experimental quantum computers will achieve superiority over conventional systems by the end of the decade and will quickly render them obsolete with subsequent capability leaps.

But executives will see that statement as a prediction. Like reading tea leaves or staring into a crystal ball. They will do nothing.

And then, in 9 or 11 years or so, when their security completely falls apart, they will scream "Why didn't you warn us?!?!" Or something equally stupid.

When I worked in information technology, one of my jobs was disaster-recovery planning. Everyone agreed that one of the key elements to surviving a disaster that might impact the business (fire, flood, whatever) was to keep your résumé updated on your PC at home. I think that applies to the folks currently working in cybersecurity as well.

As for the logo that CISA adopted, it always reminds me of this part of the introduction of Skycaptain and the World of Tomorrow.

Freezing in the Dark

That is what is waiting for Europe this winter. A decade after Fukushima disaster, foes of nuclear power reconsider

From Japan to Germany to Britain to the United States, leaders of countries that had stopped investing in nuclear power are now considering building new power plants or delaying the closure of existing ones. The shift is especially notable in Japan and Germany, where both turned decisively against nuclear power after the 2011 Fukushima disaster. And it comes even as fears mount about another potential nuclear disaster at Europe’s largest nuclear power plant in Ukraine.

The Greens in Europe are riding high, so there will be problems, and I expect to see something akin to the "death from heatwaves" stories we saw earlier in the summer. Or not. (Those stories won't help the narrative.)

Natural gas in Europe is 10 times more expensive than it was a year ago, and the continent is now competing with Japan and other global buyers for supplies of liquified natural gas, driving up prices even more.

Electricity supplies are also especially low in Europe right now, because much of France’s nuclear power fleet is offline awaiting safety certifications. Although unrelated to the war in Ukraine, it has exacerbated the overall energy crisis.

No one has died from radiation associated with Fukushima Daiichi. Say that again. NO ONE has died.

The workers in the plant AFTER the disaster will not develop cancers in measurable difference from the background rate. (Some people develop cancer, even if they have never worked in nuclear power.)

1600 people died as a result of the panic. And the stress it induced. Panic on the part of the government. On the part of the people. And on the part of Americans and Europeans. Because it is easier to cave into fear than convince you that you don’t know squat about radiation. But when politicians cave in to the “Do something!” demands, they often do the wrong thing.

As one of the articles noted, you cannot move people from a hospital's intensive care unit to a school gymnasium and not expect some people to die. Quite a few did.
