This is in relation to an incident from July of last year. Dowagiac man gets prison time for Cassopolis gas station robbery - Leader Publications
The incident occurred July 27, 2023 at the Stone Lake Marathon on South Broadway in Cassopolis. Martin entered the gas station armed with a box cutter and wearing a mask. He approached the clerk with the intention of robbing him when he was shot by a private citizen inside the station. Martin was taken to the hospital and later charged in the incident.
Cassopolis, Michigan is a small town in southwest Michigan, about 15 miles northeast of South Bend, Indiana (home to the University of Notre Dame) and about 30 miles due east of Lake Michigan.
Cordeleus Anthony Martin was sentenced to 7 to 40 years, with credit for time served. He has to pay some costs, and he faces charges in, Berrien County, Michigan, the adjacent county immediately to the west of Cass County.
There is the usual "He is a good father," "He had a crappy childhood," statements from family. Threatening a store clerk with a box cutter is not what I see a good father doing, and the judge didn't buy it either, though the sentence is less than the guidelines call for. He did get shot; that is some level of punishment, at least by way of karma.
If he had been killed instead of wounded, his family would have no doubt been calling for Justice, or something.
As for the guy who did the shooting:
The private citizen who shot Martin during the incident was not charged. [Cass County Prosecutor Victor] Fitz noted in a press release last year that the man’s actions were lawful under Michigan law relative to the defense of self and others doctrine.
“Sometimes when you play with fire you get burned,” Fitz said Friday. “In this county, state and country, citizens have the responsibility to obey the law and citizens have the responsibility to use deadly force to repel deadly force.”
For more on the initial incident: A Good Guy With a Gun Stops Armed Robbery. (That thing the Left says never happens, happened in July of last year.) For more on the DA not charging the guy who did the shooting: Good Guy with a Gun Won't Be Charged. It took the DA about a month to make the determination that the shooter would face not charges, proving that self-defense IS legal in Michigan.
