Moxie Marlinspike Is an Old-school Hacker at Heart

Cellebrite is the Israeli firm that helps police/political forces from all over the world break into phones and other stuff to "prosecute bad guys." They are not too particular about who gets swept up. In epic hack, Signal developer turns the tables on forensics firm Cellebrite | Ars Technica

On Wednesday, Marlinspike published a post that reported vulnerabilities in Cellebrite software that allowed him to execute malicious code on the Windows computer used to analyze devices. The researcher and software engineer exploited the vulnerabilities by loading specially formatted files that can be embedded into any app installed on the device.

There is a fair amount of technical detail, but there are a couple of good quotes as well.

Marlinspike said he obtained the Cellebrite gear in a “truly unbelievable coincidence” as he was walking and “saw a small package fall off a truck ahead of me.” The incident does seem truly unbelievable. Marlinspike declined to provide additional details about precisely how he came into possession of the Cellebrite tools.

Heh. And though he doesn't say it explicitly, it seems like he is going to be seeding some landmines for Cellebrite in new versions of Signal. No more than they deserve.

To be fair Cellebrite has recently stopped sales to Russian and Belarus state actors, but they have sold to Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia, and in a recent trial in Indonesia (of someone opposed to the current regime) Cellebrite hacked his Samsung S10 for the government.

The vulnerabilities could provide fodder for defense attorneys to challenge the integrity of forensic reports generated using the Cellebrite software.

Not that it will stop bad countries from doing bad things to their populations.

Cellebrite isn't the only "digital forensics" firm in the world, of course; a quite famous one, Azimuth, is out of Australia.

And you should be using Signal. I know you will ignore that advice because "It's hard!" Or something. Here's a link to the Signal site. It may be the only secure way to communicate using your smartphone.

How's That Affordable Bail Working Out?

Not to well, in Chicago, to judge by the count of victims. #17: 16-year-old charged with murder, robbery in alleged pot dealer rip-off | CWB Chicago

Because keeping violent offenders in jail would be unfair.

A 16-year-old boy was charged with first-degree murder and robbery over the weekend as prosecutors accused him of helping kill and rob a pot dealer in Bronzeville last month. At the time of the alleged murder, Daquan Griffin was already facing another robbery charge and a gun charge in juvenile court, prosecutors said. He is now the 17th person accused of killing, trying to kill, or shooting someone in Chicago this year while charged in another pending felony case.

Liberal policies at work. Or not.

I'm Shocked to Discover That They Would Lie

OK, I'm not shocked at all. New Columbus shooting footage suggests the victim’s family isn’t telling the truth

However, based on newly released footage captured by a neighbor’s security camera, we know at least the claim she was just protecting herself when the police showed up is not true.

The new video, which supplements footage captured by a responding police officer’s body camera, shows the teenage girl instigating an altercation outside her foster home shortly after law enforcement officials arrive. The footage shows Bryant knocking one person to ground while apparently shouting, “I'm going to stab the f--- out of you, b----.”

And even with a media outlet (I will not call them a "news organization") editing the bodycam video to remove the knife, it is going to be hard to see that the officer did anything but save the life of the girl who was about to be stabbed. Not that BLM, the Democrats, the Media and the Left generally won't try to turn it into a reason to riot.

"Some People Should Ride the Bus"

What should happen if you pull a gun on a police officer? What should you expect to happen, even if you don't think it should? Nika Holbert, the ‘Drug War’ and the Importance of Penalizing Stupidity

A smart dopehead would not be driving around with dope in the car. Leave your stash at home, dude. But if you are going to carry dope with you, maybe you shouldn’t be driving a car owned by a drug dealer with six felony warrants. That was Nika Holbert’s stupid mistake, followed by the even more stupid mistake of pulling a gun on a cop.

There is talk about ending the War on (Some) Drugs™ in the link above. If you think the .gov should keep drugs illegal because they are bad for you...

  1. How are you different from the Left that wants to "keep you safe?" They have outlawed large soft drinks, salt, ...
  2. What is your position on chocolate cake and ice cream? It isn't exactly health food.

And if you think the War on (Some) Drugs™ should be continued to have extra crimes to prosecute, how are you different from the swamp?

Now I don't believe that if we end the the War on (Some) Drugs™ all the people involved in illegal activities are going to straighten up and fly right. They could do that now and not spend time in prison, or get shot by cops. Instead of drugs, they will probably turn to carjacking, or something else.

Another Failure of the Victim-selection Process

I'm guessing that things didn't go as he planned them. Suspect shot by resident during south Alabama home invasion

Deputies say he hid in a closet until someone came home.

Sometime before 2:30 p.m. Monday, the couple living there returned home, at which point Cottrell left the closet and began hitting the man with an unknown object, according to the sheriff’s office. The two men got into a physical altercation and the male resident told the woman to get a gun.

She got the gun, and shot the would-be bad guy in the leg. He ran, but cops caught up with him eventually. The cops took him to a local hospital and then to the county lockup.

Oakland, CA and Violence

I am accused of concentrating too much on Chicago. Of course they make it easy by being a catastrophe of the highest order, but they are not the only city where civilization is breaking down. After deadliest day of 2021, Oakland reels from gun violence

The implications are, of course, that the guns are to blame, but then violence would be up uniformly across the country, and not concentrated in Democratic strongholds.

The most annoying quote in the whole piece is probably...

The high rate of killings in the first quarter of the year, usually a quieter period, worries longtime victim advocates like Marilyn Washington Harris, who lost her son to gun violence in 2000. She said she was exhausted Wednesday, after meeting with another mother who lost a son to gun violence.

“It’s mind-boggling. Nobody seems to know what to do,” she said. “Meanwhile families still go on losing loved ones.”

"Broken Windows" is not politically correct, so nobody seems to know about it.

The Mercury News is a California paper, so they pay homage to all of the Leftist talking points.

The breakdown of the family, as the first step to the breakdown of civilization, is not on their radar. Right and Wrong are two words not in their vocabulary. Forget Good and Evil. Forget just obeying the law.

Big Tech Censorship

You will not question The Party. Big Tech will brook no dissent against Black Lives Matter - spiked

Censorship has always been used by the rich and powerful to protect their own. So perhaps it’s not surprising that Big Tech has gone all in to spare the blushes of the multimillionaire co-founder of Black Lives Matter.

Both Twitter and F*c*book are censoring all stories about the BLM founder, Patrisse Khan-Cullors, going on a recent house-buying spree.

Nothing to see here. Move along.

Syria Launches Missile Attack, Israel Responds

Iran probably had a hand in the attack. Israel says it strikes targets in Syria after missile attack

A missile launched from Syria struck southern Israel early Thursday, setting off air raid sirens near the country’s top-secret nuclear reactor, the Israeli military said. In response, it said it attacked the missile launcher and air-defense systems in neighboring Syria.

And I thought that WWIII would start in Ukraine, or maybe in Taiwan.

Prosecutors Hate Self-defense

These days they hate it even more when police are involved. Two Utah deputies justified in killing armed man, county attorney says

A man runs at police, not just with a gun in his hand, but clearly pointing that gun at police, and it still took the DA six months to rule that they shot in self-defense.

Weber County Sheriff’s Deputy Caleb Rivera and Morgan County Sheriff’s Sgt. Craig Tillet both shot at Cody Hadley on Oct. 23. The two had responded to a Huntsville home to investigate a report that a man with a gun had broken into a camping trailer and fired a round while inside.

While the article linked at the top is full of description, the video that includes the 911 call and the bodycam video is more to the point. You can find that video at this link. It does include the video of the guy getting shot, so use your discretion as to whether or not you want to see that.

There were no riots over this guy getting shot, because he got what he wanted. He could have surrendered. He could have dropped the gun at any time. He didn't. If you run around near police waving a gun, whether you point it at them or not, you are very likely to get shot. (Confused about how to deal with police, see what Chris Rock had to say on the subject.)

Self-defense is a human-right, even for the police.

“Sadly, this is NOT a joke.”

Humanity

I haven't featured any Techno or Industrial in quite some time, because I get the feeling that people hate it. (Most of my friends do, if I try to make them listen to it...) But I love this video, even without the music.

I ran across Max Brhon in a "Dark Techno" playlist on YouTube. It might have been this song, or another, it doesn't matter, because in this case, even if you hate the music, the video is worth a couple of minutes. It isn't exactly an instrumental, but I can still read while listening to this stuff. And it transports me back to my clubbing days, which were decades ago. I am officially older than dirt. Dark Techno, while relatively new, is surprisingly similar to the music from my clubbing days.

This is "Humanity" by Max Brhon. I think you might be hearing more of his work in the near term, and not from me. He is working with the NoCopyrightSounds music label. Which is exactly what it means. So I expect a lot of videos to include music from that label.

EDM has both changed a lot, and not changed all that much. The beat is more flexible than it was. When I was hitting the clubs, the beat would start at about 7 PM, and run uninterrupted until last call. For the most part. The production values are better. But then clubbing was never about a High Fidelity experience; it was about dancing.

How's That Affordable Bail Working Out?

Sixteen and counting. Sixteen victims that is. In Chicago. #16: Man chased down and killed victim while on electronic monitoring for gun case, prosecutors say | CWB Chicago

A man who was on home electronic monitoring for a gun charge shot and killed another man on a Far South Side street earlier this month, prosecutors said Sunday. Semaj Dixon, 21, is the 16th person charged with killing, trying to kill, or shooting someone in Chicago this year while on bond for another felony case.

Because keeping violent offenders in jail is unfair.

Last time he was arrested for burglarizing a car, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. he was released on electronic monitoring, and had to pay $500 to be released.

This time, there is GPS evidence (from the monitoring anklet), security video, and eye witness testimony (he was picked out of a photo lineup), and he had gunshot residue on his pants.

This time he was ordered held without bail. Too bad someone had to die for a judge to decide that he should be held.
