The Indian Ocean isn't for the faint of heart. Monsters. INC. | Vendée Globe 2024
The tenth running of the Vendée Globe race started from France on November 10th. Single-handed sailing nonstop around the world with no assistance.
Alone. Around the World. Nonstop. No Assistance. That is the Vendée Globe
The leaders have sailed down the Atlantic, crossed into the Indian Ocean south of Cape of Good Hope, and are heading basically toward Australia. They have encountered some weather.
"The depression is today less strong than what was still being forecast yesterday but it will nevertheless generate winds of more than 50 knots and up to seven metre waves", analysed Christian Dumard, weather consultant for the race, this morning.
"The whole question is whether they will succeed in going fast in very strong winds or whether they will be caught by the light wind coming up behind" explained Dumard. The answer will probably not be known before Saturday when Dalin and Simon converge back to the north, likely to be quite far ahead of third placed Yoann Richomme (PAPREC ARKÉA) and the skippers lined up behind him including Briton Sam Goodchild in seventh on VULNERABLE.
7 meter waves are basically as tall as a 2 story house. When I was sailing most people headed into the marina if winds got much above 30 or 35 knots. (There was a crazy Brit who loved those conditions.)
The race starts and ends in Les Sables-d'Olonne. That is in the Département of Vendée, in France. (A département in France is not quite like a state in the US or Germany. They are more like a county in a state, in that they are just an administrative division.)
This is a 1 minute clip from the video below. From PlanetSail, it describes the Vendée Globe. Since I know most people don't care enough about sailing to watch a long video, the one minute clip will give you an overview.

A story from Rockford, Illinois. Elderly Rockford man shoots attacker on city’s east side
I wish someone from the Gun Hating part of the Left would explain how an elderly couple should defend themselves from a 32 year old without a firearm.
Rockford, Illinois is about an 85 mile drive northwest of downtown Chicago, or about a 65 mile drive south of Madison, Wisconsin.
On November 25, around 10 a.m., deputies were called to the 8900 block of Bluegrass Drive for a domestic disturbance. The man told police that Nathaniel Brooks, 32, was pushing, punching and slapping the female victim.
The man called 911 and retrieved his handgun, according to court documents. Brooks continued to attack the woman and the man shot him in the buttocks with no intention of killing him, officials reported.
Shooting to wound is not a strategy I like. You never know if it is really going to stop the attack in question. In this case it worked.
The suspect was taken to Javon Bea Hospital and was treated for his gunshot wound. He is now lodged in the Winnebago County Jail.
And as Colion Noir points out in the video, he is going to remeber the old guy, every time he sits down for a while.

What happens when you import a bunch of people who don't share your cultural norms? As antisemitism on transit skyrockets, TTC begs TPS chief for help | Toronto Sun
Canada has a problem.
Toronto’s explosion of antisemitism prompted an appeal for help from the head of Toronto’s transit system.
In a letter from interim TTC CEO Greg Percy to Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw, Percy said staff are dealing with a worrying rise in hateful graffiti across the transit system targeting Jewish Torontonians.
Canada was too polite to say no, even to the people they elected. And so...
“We see the spread of hate in our city, this should be setting off alarm bells,” [Ward 6 York Centre Councillor James Pasternak] said, expressing appreciation to Percy for his letter.
I can't even pretend to be shocked.

I know most of you aren't interested in chess, but I am.... Ding Escapes In Game 7 Thriller To Tie Gukesh At Halfway Of World Chess Championship
The 2024 FIDE‡ World Chess Championship is underway, and game 7 just finished in the Best of 14 match. The score is tied at 3.5 each for India GM Gukesh Dommaraju and defending champion China GM Ding Liren. Each player has won one game, and there have been 5 draws. (1 point for a win; ½ for a draw.)
[Ding] did it again, however, finding another deep resource to escape what should have been a technically lost endgame. The match is level at 3.5-3.5 at the halfway mark.
The match is taking place in Singapore, so the games take place in the middle of the night night. (Game 8 was at 4 AM Wednesday morning Eastern Standard Time.) But the Chess24 YouTube channel has the reviews of the games. A Grandmaster-level chess game can take many hours. The reviews are less than 10 minutes.
You can also find the games live on on that YouTube channel (click on the "live" tab). Game 7 lasted more than 6 hours, so you could watch part of it, even if you didn't want to get up in the early morning hours.
‡ FIDE, stands for the Fédération Internationale des Échecs or the World Chess Federation in English. It is the governing body for chess on the world stage. The organization's name is pronounced like Fee-day.

So, it’s bad news that Democrats realize they “utterly mismanaged” the immigration issue — we’d prefer them to remain oblivious, of course — but at the same time, we can take consolation that they’re still trying to frame this as a “message” failure, rather than actually admitting Democrats are wrong in terms of the underlying policy question.

Most DAs do, but Bragg is DA for the a very Blue City, in a very Blue State. Prosecution Of Daniel Penny Is A Soviet-Style Attack
Attorney General Merrick Garland, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, and dozens of big city, George Soros-funded leftist district attorneys routinely prosecute innocent citizens while letting criminals walk free.
The actions of these powerful officers of the law fit a pattern that the great Soviet-era Russian writer Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn not only would have recognized, but he also detailed.
And it has the wanted effect. New Yorkers will not come to each others aid in the face of rampant violence, because the Penny case makes it clear that the powers that be will crucify you. Be a victim. Let others be victims. Live in fear. Turn even more power over to the state.
As Solzhenitsyn explained, the Soviet state reserved for itself the monopoly on force, punishing self-defense as a form of insubordination. Such policies deliberately cultivated fear and compliance, demoralizing citizens and teaching them to rely solely on the state for protection — a state that often failed to provide it. Solzhenitsyn recounted the case of soldier Aleksandr Zakharov, who, when sentenced to 10 years for murder for defending himself from a hoodlum’s attack, asked, “And what was I supposed to do?” To which the prosecutor responded, “You should have fled!”
If you haven't read Solzhenitsyn you should. You can start be clicking thru and reading the relatively short article.
Reason number 1371 that Homeowners Associations are evil.
This is a story of the time an HOA tried to tell a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient, Retired Army Colonel Van T. Barfoot, that he could not fly the American flag in front of his home. It was a bad move.
This is it. This is a trifecta video where I finally get to talk about the military while simultaneously bashing on Karen's and HOAs all at the same time.
I particularly like the description of HOAs as "Diet Communism."
A homeowners association, which if you don't know is basically diet communism. It's where a bunch of people build some nice houses, then they get together and they're like...Hey, we got all these nice houses, you know what we need. More government. We've got federal, state, county, Municipal. It's not enough. We need even more rules. We should come together, designate a tribunal of Elder Karens to make all the important decisions for us.
This is Fat Electrician's video WW2 Veteran vs. HOA - Van T. Barfoot
Until one day in December of 2009 when at 90 years old he would open a letter informing him he was not allowed to fly the American flag in his own front yard. Which, bear in mind, literal Nazis with machine guns couldn't stop him from flying the American flag in Germany in the 1940s, and now you're gonna try to tell him he can't do it in fucking Virginia, in his own front yard.
It's a bold strategy.
So the next day Colonel Barfoot's son-in-law calls up the local radio show. They run with the story. It gets picked up nationally almost immediately. Everybody from the White House Press Secretary, to Fox News, to the local VFW is absolutely Furious.
Okay stop. At this point in time it's 2009. Barack Obama's President. Do you understand what I've just told you? This HOA has fucked up so bad, that they've got the Obama Administration and Fox News to agree on something. Okay? Okay, this is a critical fucking error on their part. The HOA would end up backing down within a week, because apparently when the entire nation is looking at you like the eye of Sauron, it ends up being bad for the Aesthetics and curb appeal of your little neighborhood.
Click thru for a recap of Colonel Barfoot's military career, including the operation that lead to him receiving the CMH, and what his career was like after that.
Impro Guns brings us more The Decker 380 3D Printed Semi-Automatic Carbine
The Decker 380 is a contender for the easiest to build semi-automatic firearm so far, if not the clear winner. Chambered in .380 ACP, it is designed from the ground up as 3D printed gun rather than being based around AR parts as with similar designs. It requires minimal metal work consisting of drilling a couple of holes in some bar which can be done using an inexpensive electric drill on a kitchen table.
Click thru for a couple of photos: one of the finished product, a couple of the components. There is also a link to a video on the build. It is a 40 minute video, so I haven't watched it. I probably will eventually. Or at least listen to it while I am doing something else.
Democrats are never wrong; the voters are wrong. Just ask the Democrats. (Actually you don't have to ask; they will go on at length about how the voters are wrong.) From The Other McCain: The Dumbest Take on the 2024 Election
A few weeks ago, I bought a copy of Thomas Sowell’s 1987 book A Conflict of Visions as a gift for a young man who was struggling with his political views. My intention is, once he’s finished reading that, to give him the second book of that Sowell trilogy, The Vision of the Anointed: Self-Congratulation as a Basis for Social Policy (1995), which I consider the best analysis of liberalism as a psychological phenomenon.
Looks like I have some new reading to get through.
Because I do not want to “smarten a chump,” I won’t explain in detail why this analysis is so wrong, but if you’re willing to risk retardation, you can read the entirety of Sarah Bernstein’s op-ed column and notice that she never once entertains the possibility that the Biden administration’s policies were unpopular because they were bad policies. Nor does it seem to cross Bernstein’s mind that perhaps Kamala Harris was a bad candidate who ran a bad campaign. No, if Democrats lose an election, Bernstein automatically assumes, it’s because the voters are wrong.
Go read the whole thing.

From Georgetown University we get the following. 2021 National Firearms Survey: Georgetown McDonough School of Business Research Paper No. 3887145
This report summarizes the findings of a national survey of firearms ownership and use conducted between February 17th and March 23rd, 2021 by the professional survey firm Centiment. This survey, which is part of a larger book project, aims to provide the most comprehensive assessment of firearms ownership and use patterns in America to date. This online survey was administered to a representative sample of approximately fifty-four thousand U.S. residents aged 18 and over, and it identified 16,708 gun owners who were, in turn, asked in-depth questions about their ownership and their use of firearms, including defensive uses of firearms.
Now Georgetown University is a Jesuit Institution. That doesn't mean as much as it did 30 or 40 years ago. While probably not as Woke as a place like Yale, it has succumb to some of the Woke mind virus. That said, they did find the following.
Consistent with other recent survey research, the survey finds an overall rate of adult firearm ownership of 31.9%, suggesting that in excess of 81.4 million Americans aged 18 and over own firearms. The survey further finds that approximately a third of gun owners (31.1%) have used a firearm to defend themselves or their property, often on more than one occasion, and it estimates that guns are used defensively by firearms owners in approximately 1.67 million incidents per year.
Handguns are the most common firearms used in self-defense, and in most instances, (81.9% of cases) no shot was fired.
Click thru for more stats on the subject.
The hat tip for this goes to Colion Noir and his video Gun Ownership Higher Among Republican Women Than Democrat Men. I can highly recommend the video, and I did recommend it on Friday. It is 7 minutes long.
Shoe0nHead isn't your typical blue-haird Leftist. She didn't shave her head in protest of the election results. I guess she actually predicted the election results (I haven't see that video yet) She actually looks at the world, and has interesting things to say. Her videos are long, about half an hour each, but they don't come out every day, and they are entertaining AF.
In this video she takes apart the Democrats and the Kamala Harris campaign. And while she does give the Democrats some advice, she tells Republicans to not worry about it, because the Democrats won't listen to her. They will continue to call people names, say that Kamala ran a "flawless" campaign, and do the same thing the next time around.
The truth is my last video was way meaner and way harsher than the final product turned out to be. When I showed the video to my assistant, he basically had an intervention with me and he was like,Listen you need to soften this up a bit. It's a few days before the election, you went too hard.Well the election is over, and I'm sorry River but, I'm going hard.
You idiots. You morons. You imbeciles.
And then she let's the Dems have it.
One part I particularly liked is the section on Joe Rogan, in which Shoe0nHead talks about the Left's discussion of Joe Rogan: ShoeOnHead "We Need a Liberal Joe Rogan." It's a one minute clip.
Of course, they had a "Liberal Joe Rogan." His name? Joe Rogan. He endorsed Bernie Sanders back in the day. So they tried to destroy him. How dare you not go along with the establishment! [in your best Gretta T. voice] How dare you!
This is the Shoe0nHead video Downfall of The Democrats | The Truth About The 2024 Election. As I mentioned, it is a bit long at 37 minutes, but it is fun to see a Leftist/Populist take apart the Democratic establishment.
In one section of the video, a Democratic Party anayst said something about White men without college degrees ruining this country. Her response?
First of all, white men without college degrees built this country, [ __ ].

Can you give me another explanation for why this ruling took so long? Fatal shooting in Vermillion, SD was justified, authorities say
This event took place back in the middle of May in Vermillion, South Dakota, which is about 40 miles northwest of Sioux City, Iowa.
Authorities say that Kinchen, a Vermillion resident, texted a friend that day saying he was going to “slaughter” the owner of the home on Cataline Avenue. That evening, Kinchen reportedly obtained a black facemask, dressed in all-black clothing, altered his appearance by shaving his face and got a handgun. He then walked several blocks to the Catalina Avenue home and forced his way in.
The homeowner was there with a guest. Kinchen chased the guest and fired his gun at the guest.
The guest reportedly got a handgun from a vehicle in the garage and returned fire. Kinchen was struck in the arm and chest and died because of those injuries.
By entering the home he invaded, he was in violation of a court order.
So you add all of that up, and I have to ask, "Why did it take so long to determine the shooting was justified?" My answer is that the prosecutor hates self-defense.
Someone will say that they were waiting on the toxicology. (His blood alcohol was nearly three times the legal limit to be driving.) And what, does the toxicology have to do with the other facts in this case? Would the shooting not be justified if he was sober, or even more out of this mind?
And another article does reference the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation. So waiting on a bureaucracy is probably part of the excuse. But again, what difference could it have made?
At least it seems that they got to the right place eventually.
This has all the earmarks of a domestic violence attack. That he was an ex-boyfriend or ex-husband turned violent stalker. None of the articles I have seen state that, however, so I can't say that for sure.
Self-defense is a human-right.
