Disney and the 2025 Box Office

In 2025, The Walt Disney Company is enduring what might go down as its darkest theatrical year in memory—accumulating a cascade of box-office disappointments that arguably outstrips any distributor in a single calendar year. In fact, Disney has likely broken the record for most financial failures at the box office in a single year… beating its own previous record in 2023!

A string of headline projects, Captain America: Brave New World, Snow White, Thunderbolts, Elio, Fantastic Four (in its latest iteration), Freakier Friday and now the underwhelming debut of Tron: Ares, have each fallen short of expectations to various degrees.

In 2023 Disney lost about $1 billion on 4 flops, including The Marvels. A movie no one asked for about 3 characters that no one likes.

2025 has been filled with DEI. Rachel Zegler as Snow White. Captain Falcon American. The Fantastic Four with the Pedro Pascal, a guy everyone is starting to hate, turned about to be a story about 2 girlbosses. Elio was an animated disaster, that after it was cut apart and put back together apparently made no sense, though they did pull some DEI out of it. There was a sequel that no one asked for, Freaker Friday. And then there is Tron: Ares. A Tron film without Tron. It has as much hope as making money as the Mad Max film without Mad Max, or the Spider-Man films that didn't include Spider-Man. In other words, somewhere between slim and none.
