Get Woke. Destroy an entire industry. October Box Office Collapses to 27-Year Low as Hollywood Faces Dire Straits and a Major Reality Check - Geeks + Gamers
As much fun as it is to dunk on Disney, they are not the only movie studio in trouble this year.
Hollywood just lived through a horror this month — and it had nothing to do with Halloween ghosts, slashers, or masked killers. The October Box Office has officially cratered to its worst performance in 27 years, excluding the global shutdown in 2020. According to The Hollywood Reporter, domestic revenue for the month is expected to land around $425 million, the lowest since 1997.
The entire year hasn't ended of course. Wicked for Good and the next iteration of the Avatar franchise are still due. Both will do well. But they are the outliers, like Disney's Lilo and Stitch.
People show up for excitement, escapism, and genuine cultural buzz — not formulaic risk-avoidance or projects green-lit for symbolism instead of story.
I have a theory as to one of the things, aside from the Woke insanity, that has killed Hollywood. It is the 3 hour movie. When movies were 90 minutes, it was possible to have a date that consisted of dinner and a movie, followed by coffee or a drink. When you make the movies 3 hours, there simply isn't time. There is only time for the movie, and nothing else.
It is too bad, really. I always liked going to the movies, but the theaters cannot survive under the current circumstances.
And yes I know that some of you hate the experience because of people and their phones. When I go to movies, it is at times when kids are in school and young adults are - mostly - at work. A few retirees in a theater doesn't create a bad environment.

A lot of people are simply tired of paying $20 a ticket and then another $30 for popcorn and soda just to see a BLEH movie. Even the good ones aren't worth that price. Especially when you can just wait a couple months and stream all of them to your home for the $10-$15 a month it costs for a streaming membership. With the perfection not CG/AI soon it will cost much less to create a "movie" with no actual actors or live scenery. Hollywood is dying...and they are helping that death along with their insanity.
ReplyDeleteI quit going to movies about 15 years ago because I realized that Hollywood no longer made movies for people like me. I have been to the theater exactly twice since then, both for anime movies. At home I usually watch anime, old movies and tv shows. I want to be entertained, not lectured, scolded, preached to or held in contempt. Special effects mean nothing if there is no story. Hollywood ran off the old white guys who wrote screen plays and the people that replaced them cannot do anything except bring us a remake for a modern audience. You know, the audience that doesn't actually exist outside the writers room.
ReplyDeleteAlso see my previous post that looks particularly at Disney, not Hollywood in general. Disney and the 2025 Box Office
ReplyDeleteRyan Kinel the doesn't have much patience for Hollywood. Pathetic Hollywood In PANIC MODE As Box Office Hits 30 Year LOW! He does point out that the number published in these articles doesn't account for inflation. When you do that it is worse than a 30 year low.
