He Suffered a Failure of the Victim-selection Process

He apparently thought that it would be a good idea to break into someone's home. He was mistaken. Fontana homeowner shoots, kills apparent burglar.

The homeowner heard noises in his home that alarmed him, prompting him to grab a gun and inspect the source of the disturbance. He then discovered a masked man inside and shot him, said Officer Daniel Romero, a Fontana Police Department spokesman.

“The homeowner was startled enough to where he armed himself, before he looked around his house,” Romero said. “He was lucky — this could have gone drastically different.”

That sequence of events, arm yourself and only then look around the house, is the correct sequence. If it is your neighbors cat, or a racoon, or whatever you can always put the firearm away.

Police were canvasing for security cameras in the area. It isn't clear from the article if they found any or not, but they did not find any evidence that the guy who got shot was with anyone.

The investigation is continuing. Self-defense is a human-right, and it may be your legal right in California, but I am not sure I would count on that. Though the cops seem convinced that legal self-defense is what took place in this situation
