Salt water destroys lithium-ion batteries. Not might destroy; will destroy. Fresh water will only reach the level of "probably destroy" the batteries.
This is a result of the Nor'easter that recently hit the East Coast.
This is the StacheD Training video Nor'easter Flooding: Lithium-ion Golf Cart Battery Ignites Days Later. There have been "about a dozen battery related fires since the storm."
The tl;dr recommendation: After seawater flooding (or any flooding), get all lithium-ion batteries that have been flooded out of and away from your home until you can dispose of them properly. That can be tough to do.
