Born: 19 October 1810. Died: 22 July 1903.
The Civil War is one of my favorite studies in history, because there is a tremendous amount of information about the war, including a fair number of books written by people who were actually in the war, both people fighting, and civilians just trying to get by. But I had not heard everything about Cassius Clay before the Fat Electrician's video came along.
For those of you not interested in making a study of history, I recommend the documentary series The Civil War by Ken Burns. It is (I believe) 9 hours on the war. One hour episodes of a series from the Public Broadcasting System, best taken one hour per week or so. Not really the kind of thing to binge, but then I don't like binging on stuff. It is streaming on PBS (or so it seems) and available on Prime Video.
Cassius Marcellus Clay was the most infamous abolitionist in American History. The fact that he was the son on one of the wealthiest slave-owners in America, and he was opposed to slavery pissed off a lot people. This being the 1820s, he fought a lot of duels.
This is the Fat Electrician's video The Most Gangster Politician Ever - Cassius Marcellus Clay
This man is probably the most influential person in American history that you've never heard of.
The video is 14 minutes, so grab a coffee.
Abraham Lincoln felt that the influence of the Jesuits was the decisive factor in turning the issue of slavery in the U.S. into a civil war, as they continually agitated for full emancipation without any compensation to the slave owners and without any education for the slaves.
ReplyDeleteSo it was the Catholics' fault. Why am I not surprised.
