Teachers Behaving Badly

Are we shocked that people are bad around kids? Lessons in Betrayal: Former Chicago Public Schools students say they were groomed by teachers

And why are schools investigating themselves? Shouldn't the police be investigating? Some of this is really, really questionable behavior, but some it is clearly against the law. Excuse me. There is an "inspector general" and an entire staff. It is of course headed by a lawyer, which I take to mean that most "findings" will be deemed attorney-client privlege and so will never be released to the public.

While the article starts out with cases where students were groomed for sex, but no sex occurred until they turned 18, if you read down, the cases become more problematic.

[Marty Gould, an attorney,] represents a former Little Village student, Jane Doe, who attended the Social Justice High School and was in the Class of 2016.

She says the former dean of the Social Justice High School, Brian Crowder groomed her and sexually abused her throughout her time in high school.

Crowder is accused of posing as Jane’s stepfather so that she could get abortions while underage.

There are statistics. Explanations of what the district does etc.

Hat tip to Second City Cop: CPS Groomers?

Keep in mind, this is a single high school. There are something like 160 CPS high schools, including Selective Enrollment, Military Academies, Magnet, Special-Ed, IB, Charter, Technical and neighborhood.

According to one detective we talked to, there are - on average - over 400 complaints annually involving CPS teachers at all levels. Some don't pan out. Many do.

Second City Cops maintains that the crisis "dwarfs" the allegations leveled at the Catholic Church in Chicago, but somehow, until the past couple of years, hasn't gotten the same scrutiny.
