Self-Defense Is Legal in Michigan

DAs Hate that. ‘You going home now, baby.’ Saginaw man acquitted of murder on grounds of self-defense

Eric M. Wills II, 24, has been in jail awaiting trial since he was arresting in July of last year.

Jurors began deliberating about 11:20 a.m. Friday. Had the jury convicted Wills of first-degree murder, he would have faced life imprisonment without the chance of parole. A second-degree murder conviction also carries a life sentence, though parole is possible.

The not guilty verdict was handed down at 2:30 p.m.

“It’s the right decision,” Crawford said of the jury’s findings. “We knew all along it was a valid case of self-defense. There was no clearer scenario. It shouldn’t have been charged, and I stand by that. The jury saw this and were able to come to a quick conclusion.”

DAs hate self-defense, and they love to win. And they thought they could win, even though it sounds like the case wasn't that good. (From 11:30 to 2:30 including time for lunch, is not a lot of deliberating.)

Mr. Wills has other legal problems, but he was released on bond after the not guilty finding.
