That is the only explanation I can come up with. Vanessa Kirby Confirms 'Fantastic Four: First Steps' Explores Gender Politics With Sue Storm
That is exactly what everyone wants in their summer, blockbuster, superhero movie - an examination of gender politics.
Disney would get more people in theaters if the set a pile of $100 million worth of cash on fire, and put it on the big screen.
Kirby spoke with Entertainment Weekly saying, “If you played an exact '60s Sue today, everyone would think she was a bit of a doormat. So figuring out how to capture the essence of what she represented to each generation, where the gender politics were different, and embody that today, was one of the greatest joys of this."
The idea that Sue Storm was a doormat in the early Fantastic Four comics is ridiculous. In the second issue of Fantastic Four, she turns invisible and breaks herself free from a federal detainment facility.
Any bets on whether or not Vanessa Kirby has actually read ANY of the Fantastic Four comics? My guess is the answer is no, she has never read any comic in her life. Her research probably consisted of watching the trailer for the first second‡ attempt at an adaptation from 2005. I doubt she even watched the whole thing.
She has an image - based on her own understanding of the 1960s - of what the comic was, and she is now pontificating about that. Of course I doubt that the people who wrote the screenplay have much more of an understanding. Disney Marvel goes out of its way to hire people who know nothing of the comics. Which explains things like Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness and Captain America 4.
Through in the fact that they decided to use the gender-swapped Silver Surfer from the comics, and I'm out.
Why does Disney hate money?

There are more of course. Mr. H. Reviews had a video. It was discussed on Friday Night Tights, (I may add that once the relevant section is clipped). I'm sure there are more. No. One. Wants. This. Fans of Fantastic Four don't want a soy-boy Johnny Storm, or a Girl-Boss Sue Storm, or Reed Richards to take a back seat. That is not the Fantastic Four. If you don't want to play that character, then don't. Have someone write a new girl-boss character, or a new soy-boy superhero. But don't pretend they are the F4.
‡ I always forget about 1994 version.
