Aspiral

One of the things I love about the internet, is how easy it is to find out about new music from my favorite bands. Between YouTube channels and Twitter/X feeds and the rest, I almost don't need to do anything. Like this. It showed up in my YouTube subscriptions shortly after it was published.

And Epica is one of my favorite bands, not just because Simone Simons has a wonderful voice, but she does, but because the music is well written. Usually Epica is Symphonic Metal, but this is more of a ballad, so here we are on a Saturday morning.

Mark Jansen was a guitarist for the band After Forever (where Floor Jansen - no relation - was lead singer) before he joined Epica. Ariën van Weesenbeek is the drummer, with Coen Janssen on keyboards, Rob van der Loo playing bass, and Isaac Delahaye as lead guitarist, and also doing some accoustic guitar work. Together with Simone Simons, that is Epica. Yes, they are out of The Netherlands, but they sing in English.

Update: Since this is a live performance, here is a link to the lyrics. I find them useful.

This is "Aspiral (Live At The Symphonic Synergy)" by Epica. It was released on Tuesday April 8th, ahead of their album, Aspiral which was released on Friday, April 11th.

This was recorded at AFAS Live (formerly known as the Heineken Music Hall), which is a concert hall in Amsterdam.

For those of us who are dinosaurs at heart, the music is available on CD, and since it is a live concert there is also a Blu-ray disc available. Sadly, the vinyl was limited edition, though I think some of it might still be available. See the Epica website if you're interested. (You need to support the musicians you like, because Spotify, et al, really don't pay them enough.)
