Canada thought they could pressure Meta into saving their propaganda outlets. Excuse me, "News" outlets. Facebook and Instagram’s news blackout in Canada starts today
As promised, Meta has begun blocking news content in Canada. Starting today, Facebook and Instagram users in the country will no longer be able to view or share news links or see videos and photos posted by publishers and broadcasters. The company, which has threatened to make the drastic move for several months, said it will take a few weeks for the change to come into effect for all users in the country.
David and Goliath is an interesting tale, but in most cases the small guy gets crushed by the big guy.
Meta made the decision in response to Canadian legislators passing the Online News Act. The law requires certain platforms to negotiate revenue-sharing agreements with news organizations.
It mandates revenue sharing with news organizations that appear on the platform in question. No news organizations appear, no revenue, no sharing.
Now they may relent and pay for news, as they do in Australia. I mean, Canada is bigger than Australia, though I don't know if there is a difference in the laws each country passed.
