Netflix & Jada Pinkett Smith Race-swap Cleopatra and Piss off Egypt

It is not an easy thing to do, to upset an entire country. Netflix’s Black Cleopatra Docudrama Prompts Enraged Egyptian Broadcaster to Make Its Own Cleopatra Doc in Which She Will Be Light-Skinned.

And it isn't just the broadcaster and the government of Egypt who have weighed in, scholars have taken Netflix to task as well.

In response to what they claim is Netflix’s falsification of Egypt’s history, the Al Wathaeqya channel – which is a subsidiary of Egypt’s state-affiliated United Media Services – has announced start of production on a high-end doc about the true story of Queen Cleopatra, which it claims in a statement is based on the “utmost levels” of research and accuracy.

It is funny how Variety, beholden to the American entertainment industry, uses the phrase, "they claim." Who knows Egyptian history better than the Egyptians? Certainly not Jada Pinkett Smith, who admitted somewhere that this was a "re-imagining."

The hat tip for all of this goes to Ryan Kinel. This is the RK Outpost's video Netflix Black Cleopatra Series Gets DESTROYED By Egypt | Called Out As Woke LIARS Over Race Swap

A quick look at IMDB turns up a 2025 production of Cleopatra slated to star Gal Gadot (of Wonder Woman) as the 1st Century ruler of Egypt. I'm not sure that is the version the Al Wathaeqya channel has in mind. It is apparently to be based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning biography, Cleopatra: A Life by Stacy Schiff. I imagine it will be better than anything Netflix comes up with.

  1. Someone should make a movie about MLK and use a white actor for all the parts.

Or the post: Egypt Is Pissed at Netflix Over Blackwashing Cleopatra

That was all over Twitter when Smith's first statement about "re-imagining" history for a documentary was made.
