Or does it? Firm of NYC homeless boss Joslyn Carter’s sister lands $1.7B in shelter contracts
So your sister is in charge of NYC's Department of Homeless Services (DHS), and you have a firm that just "happens" to have $1.7 Billion (with a capital "B") worth of contracts with various parts of the city, including DHS. I'm sure those contracts were awarded fairly. Others are not so sure.
[Councilman Robert Holden (D-Queens)] suspected something was amiss when he said he failed to get an adequate response from Westhab or the city homeless officials.
“The whole thing stinks to high heaven. Why is Westhab getting all this money?,” Holden said Sunday. “It looks like they have someone on the inside. They’re protected.”
“They’re not doing a good job at the shelter on Cooper Avenue. It’s a mess over there.”
Holden has demanded an investigation under something called the Department of Investigation and Conflicts of Interest Board. Does the title to that organization imply that there are whole bunch of conflicts of interest in NYC government? No. Can't be. A corrupt politician? I'm shocked you would even suggest such a thing.
But don't worry. The folks in the city have "crossed my heart and hope to die" level sworn that all is well and there are no conflicts anywhere. We promise.
So who exactly is the Department of Homeless Services helping?
