If Kia/Hyundai Can't Sell Cars, Maybe They Will Fix This Mess

Because they couldn't be bothered to fix it for the past few years. Insurance carriers refuse to issue new policies for Kias, Hyundais as thefts skyrocket in Chicago - CWB Chicago. This isn't just an issue in Chicago.

The cars, which have an ignition design flaw that makes them easy to steal by so-called “Kia boys,” are too much of a risk, and companies, including Progressive, are refusing to accept the risks.

On Friday, CWB Chicago tried to get insurance for affected Kia models in Lakeview, the Loop, and Wicker Park, but Progressive’s online quote service said no.

“We are unable to offer you a policy at this time due to high theft rates in your geographic location,” the Progressive site said after each attempt. Progressive suggested trying other carriers, including Hugo Insurance and Allstate.

The cars are apparently stupidly easy to steal, requiring only a screwdriver and a USB cable.

But hey. Their AUTOMOTIVE engineers, or something. They don't have to worry about security.

I wonder how vulnerable to hacking the vehicles are. Physical security. Data security. They're mechanical engineers, above that petty crap.

And I do recognize that the rise in carjackings is, in part, because stealing cars is - for the most part - hard when you don't have the key. Easier to take the car and the key/fob from the owner.
