HeyJackass! has the numbers on that. Summer of Joy Wrap-up.
While the Summer of Joy wasn’t as peaceful as the last couple of years, it was more joyful than others of recent vintage.
The summer, as tallied by HeyJackass! have a differing number of days each year. Summer is listed as running from 12:00 PM Friday of Memorial Day weekend thru 6:00 AM Tuesday after Labor Day. This does collect the first and last holidays, and includes Fourth of July (always an active weekend) and the Air Show, in the years that came to town.
Summer of Joy*: 244 killed, 1,107 wounded
Summer 2021: 313 killed, 1,468 wounded
Summer 2020: 346 killed, 1,604 wounded
Summer 2019: 172 killed, 890 wounded
Summer 2018: 210 killed, 924 wounded
There are many more stats, including the racial and gender breakdown of the victims, #ShotInTheAss, Selfies, and the shot clock.
One thing that I noticed is that there were more stories of self-defense out of Chicago than I had covered this summer.
8 shot in self defense, 3 fatally
I may have to adjust some of my web searches to find more legal self-defense in the blue cities.
Click thru for the details, and if you can throw a few bucks toward HeyJackass! they deserve it. (They have swag you can buy!) The best numbers on gun violence in that city come from HeyJackass! Chicago PD has been known to cook the books, and CPD just ignores crimes on the interstate highways, since they are covered by Illinois State Police. (State Police had to deal with 18 shootings, two of which were fatal this summer.)
