The bounty on his head had been raised to $600,000. So I guess this is not too surprising. Novelist Salman Rushdie on ventilator after New York stabbing | Reuters
The lack of security is a bit surprising, though not completely surprising. Americans don't want to admit that we really need security.
Salman Rushdie, the Indian-born novelist who spent years in hiding after Iran urged Muslims to kill him because of his writing, was stabbed in the neck and torso onstage at a lecture in New York state on Friday and airlifted to a hospital, police said.
He will lose an eye, and the use of one arm. His liver has been damaged.
A police officer providing security arrested Hadi Matar, a 24-year-old man. The article says he is from New Jersey. I'm guessing that is only where he lives today. But it is only a guess.
Iran's semi-official Fars News Agency and other news outlets donated money in 2016 to increase the bounty by $600,000. Fars called Rushdie an apostate who "insulted the prophet" in its report on Friday's attack.
Do we expect the press to run with this, or bury it? I haven't looked. It doesn't help their narrative... Whichever narrative they are pushing this week.
I guess we will learn more.
