I don't often agree with Bill Mayer, but because the Left has moved so far past Mayer, I find myself agreeing with some of the stuff he says.

The problem with communism – and with some very recent ideologies here at home – is that they think you can change reality by screaming at it.

Terrorists or Immigrants?

From The Other McCain we get the following: Illegal Alien From Eritrea on Terror Watch List Arrested in Gates County, N.C.

Trump asked what a lot of common-sense Americans would have asked, i.e., why are we taking in people from the most wretched places on the planet, rather than from, say, Norway? (Trump had recently met with the Norwegian prime minister before the discussion with Durbin.) Because Democrats have no answer for such an obvious question, they responded by denouncing Trump as a “RAAAAACIST“! Now that Joe Biden is in the White House, common-sense people have more questions

32-year-old Awet Hagos, from Eritrea, was arresting in North Carolina after he barricaded himself in his home for a 4-hour standoff.

So how did a 32-year-old terrorist end up living in North Carolina?

Probably the answer is, when you just stop enforcing immigration law completely — as the Biden administration seems to have done — and throw the doors open to millions of foreigners without limit, a certain percentage of those arrivals will be, shall we say, problematic.

Criminals Committing Crimes

What the Democrats want to call "Newcomers" or something. 3 Illegal Immigrants Charged With Abducting & Raping Woman In Lake Worth

Palm Beach County's sheriff held a last minute news conference on Wednesday with one simple but crucial message.

"Don't think for a minute that what happens at the Mexican border doesn't affect us here. Here you have three illegals that should have never been in this country that have committed a very serious crime...kidnapping and sexual battery of a lady."

Lake Worth, Florida is on the Atlantic coast about 8 miles south of Palm Beach, or about 15 miles north of Boca Raton. It is about 60 miles north of Miami.

The people with their eyes closed say that immigration built this country. But it wasn't immigrants like this. My grandfather and his cousin came to this country, went to work in a coal mine in Pennsylvania. My grandfather eventually moved to Illinois to get out of the mine. He got married, had a career in manufacturing, which wasn't too bad considering his lack of education, ran a business for while, and in general was a stand up guy.

[Sheriff] Ric Bradshaw is referring to three men who are Guatemalan nationals that were arrested for abducting a woman from a residential area near Lake Worth Beach early Monday morning and sexually assaulting her in two different locations.

She was rescued after flagging down a passerby.

The Progressives won't want this story to get out there, because Social Justice is more important than Actual Justice. Or something.

The Banana Equivalent Dose - OR - Your Food Is Radioactive (It always has been!)

Note: This is an Old Post from the now, offline Archives. I am reproducing it here because nuclear came up in a recent article, and I'm guessing it will come up again, and the Green Movement (so called) comes to terms with the limitations of solar and wind power.

This also shows MY age, in that the rem measurement of radiation is a bit outdated today, but you can convert to the sievert if you really feel the need... The basic message is correct. Stop jumping at shadows.

(Originally published 21 March 2011)

I keep forgetting that people have no idea regarding radiation.

Once upon a time, a long time ago, in a land not too far away, I worked for the Department of Energy in a building where several of the rooms were so radioactive you couldn't enter, and my job involved handling radioactive isotopes for use in various experiments. Mostly they where stored in lead boxes, but I had to take them out of the boxes, put them in the experimental apparatus, run the experiments and put them away. I was exposed to detectable but not dangerous levels of radiation. Radiation wasn't the biggest danger in that building, as it contained a tower of pressurized carbon tetrafluoride, (a cousin of carbon tetrachloride that used to be a cleaning solution - only nastier). We didn't hold radiation drills - though there were alarms. We did hold drills on what to do if the carbon tetrafluoride containment failed.

But I digress. Suffice it to say that I know a little bit about radiation and radiation hazards.

Radiation is usually measured in Roentgen Equivalent Man units or rems. There are other measurements, and you can invent your own, so someone came up with the Banana Equivalent Dose.

Here is fact number one. You are exposed to radiation every single day. There is always radiation around you, and there always has been. Get over being afraid of radiation. Too much radiation will kill you, but even if you go live in a fallout shelter, you can't get away from all of it.

Fact 2. Your food is radioactive. Almost all of it. Always has been.

We can detect the (ridiculously small amount of) excess radiation in bananas. (They can set off the radiation detectors at the ports where they are imported.) They are slightly more radioactive than the average bit of food, because they are high in potassium - which is good for you and why we eat bananas. But it means they contain some radioactive potassium. (Very little - but in measurable amounts.)

One thousand banana-equivalent-dose of radiation (or the radiation you would ingest if you ate 1000 bananas in a VERY short time, like a few hours) has the same effect on your health as smoking something less than 2 cigarettes. Or in more mathematical terms 1 BED = 0.01 mrem or 0.00001 rem. Doses of radiation of more than 50 rem but less than 200 rem (or much more than your average banana) will make you sick but rarely kill unless there are other issues. Doses in excess of 1000 rem are fatal. (Between 200 and 1000 you will be very sick, and the higher the dose, the worse off you will be.)

Other foods with "excess" radiation include nuts (and peanut butter), sunflower seeds, etc. Brazil nuts are particularly radioactive.

But now that you know this DON'T stop eating the bananas. Or the nuts. They are good for you. Just don't follow the fear mongers when they try to start the next crazy parade.

(Note: OK the banana equivalent dose isn't a really good method for talking about radiation and its hazards. But neither is the insanity you see on the 24-hour news coverage. NPR "news" was actually discussing the Godzilla movies yesterday. I nearly crashed my car. Godzilla? Really? There isn't anything more informative to be talking about like the new war - or is it a police action - in Libya, the state of the economy or the efforts of folks like the Red Cross to do something besides spread fear.)

The caller broke free from Taylor, who SCSO said was still armed with a hammer. Another person in the home shot Taylor in the leg, and he fled the scene in his car.

Shortly after that a 911 call was made for a guy with a gunshot wound. He was taken to a local hospital, and then to county lockup.

The booking paperwork includes "first-degree burglary, second-degree kidnapping, second-degree assault, and violation of a protection order with assault charges."

The woman and the person doing the shooting were not charged, because while Washington may be a Deep Blue state, it has a long tradition of protecting the right of self defense.

Biden Abandons Americans in Haiti

Did we expect anything else? Biden Admin Tells Americans Stuck In Haiti They Must Make It To Extraction Point ‘At Your Own Risk’

The State Department is “arranging a charter flight for U.S. citizens” to escape Haiti, which has descended into chaos as criminal gangs fight in the streets for control of the Caribbean nation, the agency announced. Because the airport in Port-au-Prince — the Haitian capital, the largest city in the country and scene of the worst fighting — has been shut down, the State Department is planning to fly Americans out of Cap-Haitien, but only if stranded Americans are able to get to Cap-Haitien in time on their own.

“Travel to Cap-Haitien is conducted at your own risk,” the State Department wrote in a Saturday post to X.

This Is Why I Don't Use My Phone for Banking

Aside from all the technical problems with our phone system's architecture, there is stuff like this. Former telecom manager admits to doing SIM swaps for $1,000

SIM swapping is an unauthorized porting of a targeted person's phone number to another physical SIM card or eSIM chip controlled by the attacker. These types of attacks are usually conducted via social engineering attacks against customer support agents or through insiders at mobile companies.

This attack aims to take control of the target's phone number to receive SMS-based one-time passwords (OTPs) sent as part of two-factor authentication protection on online accounts.

It had been easy enough for hackers to social engineer the employees at a phone company. "Please, can't you help me?" was about all they had to say. Now that the phone companies and their employees have been hit over the head about that, they just find someone on the inside who needs some extra cash. And Bob's your uncle.

Katz received $1,000 in Bitcoin per SIM swap (total of $5,000), plus an (unspecified) percentage of the profits earned from the illicit access to the victims' devices.

For $5,000 he is now facing a maximum of five years in prison.

A History of Violence

From the Other McCain we have a story of what happens when soft-on-crime policies become accepted in the Criminal Justice System, so called. ‘An Extensive Criminal History’

In September of 2014 he escaped from jail in South Carolina when he and another inmate overpowered two officers, beating one.

Jaremy Alexander Smith was recaptured in a couple of hours with the aid of K9 team.

Between 2014 and 2024 he amassed “an extensive criminal history in South Carolina.” Despite that he was one the street.

Friday morning, Marion County authorities issued a missing persons alert for Phonesia Machado-Fore, a paramedic who worked in neighboring Florence County. Machado-Fore had last been seen at her home on Tuesday and, the alert noted, she drove a white BMW.

Not coincidentally, at 5 a.m. Friday morning, about 1,500 miles west of Marion County, South Carolina, New Mexico State Police Officer Justin Hare “was dispatched to Interstate 40, near milepost 318, to assist a motorist in a white BMW who had a flat tire and was attempting to wave down other motorists.”

Cut to the chase. Jaremy Alexander Smith killed Ms. Machado-Fore and stole her car. When Officer Justin Hare offered to help a stranded motorist, Mr. Smith shot him, dumped his body, and then abandoned his car a few miles down the road.

That “extensive criminal history in South Carolina” includes...

taking hostages and rioting in jail; breaking and entering; armed robbery; resisting or evading police officers; auto theft; and shooting at or from a motor vehicle.

So given all that, The Other McCain has a question of for the South Carolina Criminal Justice System, so called.

WHAT THE HELL, SOUTH CAROLINA? Given his “extensive criminal history,” why wasn’t Jaremy Smith behind bars? Here you’ve got two people dead — a paramedic in South Carolina and a state trooper in New Mexico, because some judge or district attorney missed a chance to put this murderous lowlife away for 20 or 30 years?

There is more. Click thru.

For those of you who don't get the reference, A History of Violence is the name of a movie staring Viggo Mortensen - who you probably know as Aragorn from Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy. It was critically acclaimed, but it didn't do too well at the box office. I thought it was good.

Don't Bring a Hammer to a Gunfight

Self-defense in New Jersey? What is the world coming to? N.J. homeowner shoots, kills hammer-carrying burglar, cops say

The Bert Avenue resident got his gun when he noticed a man carrying a hammer was smashing his Ring camera and banging on his front door at about 10:25 p.m., the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office said Tuesday.

The homeowner shot Andray Ingram in the chest when Ingram reached the vestibule inside the home, authorities said.

While the homeowner was not charged, the "professional journalist" made sure to note that the investigation is not over, holding out hope for the Left that the homeowner will be charged for not relying on the state for his personal safety. Even though the state has no hope of actually providing it.

As bad as this article is, there are others that are much worse. One was lamenting the state of "gun violence" with no mention of hammer violence. That same article was worried about the relatives of Andray Ingram. No article I could find on this incident could give me any insight into Mr. Ingram, but some web searching turned up an article from 2016 about a 26-year-old Andray Ingram, from Trenton, New Jersey. Drugs, shooting, stabbing and more: April 4, 2016 Trentonian Police Blotter

Heroin and Crack: Andray Ingram, 26, was arrested Sunday night after police found him in possession of 12 decks of heroin and a small amount of crack cocaine. Police say officers encountered Ingram after they saw a vehicle stopped in the 600 block of Hamilton Avenue blocking traffic. Officials say Ingram does not have a driver’s license, so he was removed from the car and that’s when police found the drugs.

That 2nd article doesn't say what the charges were, or if there was a plea deal, or what the outcome of any court case might have been in 2016. It does include a mug shot of Andray Ingram. If you're wondering why none of the 2024 "professional journalists" would provide this info, I can tell you that it probably has to do with protecting a certain narrative. Click thru.

Crime in NYC Has Impacts on the Economy

Society breaks down in the absence of law and order. Retail giant wants out of MTA transit center lease, blames crime for scaring away tenants.

Westfield Fulton Center claims the subway hub has been overrun by homeless people, street hustlers and vandalism because of a lack of adequate security, according to court papers — as one shop manager told The Post even a tip jar was stolen multiple times.

Assaults and employee intimidation have become increasingly common at the glass-and-steel building on the corner of Fulton Street and Broadway, which the MTA initially pitched as comparable in stature to Rockefeller Center or Grand Central Station, the company claimed.

NYC and the MTA would like to differ. Crime is not a problem in New York City. (Pay no attention to the National Guard in the subway!)

An MTA spokesperson declined to comment on the litigation, but said in a statement that “we have full confidence in the NYPD, which has surged officers into the subway, to ensure safety across the transit system, including at Fulton Center.”

Will the last business to leave NYC please punch whichever Democrat is mayor in the face? Thanks. (Hat tip to A Day In The Life Of A Talk Radio Blogger.)

This is where I mention Hobbes' Leviathan, because the idea that security is required for civilization to endure is not new. Hobbes published Leviathan in 1651. In that book he describes the State of War that ensues when law and order break down.

Western Civilization is built on a foundation of law and order. Without law and order, you can't have nice things. You can't have anything really. Or as Hobbes stated it, when there is no force-of-law to keep people in check, things break down.

This is the situation in New York City, and most other Blue Cities. Crime is rampant and not punished. Businesses and people are fleeing, those that can anyway. More will, as things deteriorate.

The Left Screeching About How Felony Murder Is Unfair in 3, 2, ...

Being held accountable for the completely foreseeable consequences of your actions is unfair. Or something. From Alabama dot com.... Man charged in death of acquaintance who was fatally shot by Hueytown homeowner

If someone is killed as a result of you committing a felony, then you are responsible for that death. You created the circumstances that lead to the death. It has different names in different jurisdictions, but most of us who are not lawyers call it felony murder.

A Bessemer man has been charged with murder in the death of an acquaintance who was fatally shot by a Hueytown homeowner last month.

Hueytown, Alabama is about a 20 minute drive southwest of Birmingham on Interstate 20. Bessemer, Alabama is about 5 miles northwest of Hueytown.

There are very few details provided, aside from who died, and who is charged, but the list of charges indicates that there is quite a story.

La’Garyeus Lamar Boglin, 26, is charged with felony murder in the Feb. 19 slaying of 43-year-old Contravia Lamond Jackson.

Boglin is also charged with first-degree robbery, first-degree kidnapping, and first-degree burglary in connection with the same incident.

The Left hates Felony Murder because they hate consequences generally.

In this case, the homeowner, the person who actually did the shooting, was not charged because self-defense is a thing in Alabama. And it sounds like he may have also been defending his sister. That isn't clear because of the lack of details.

Self-defense is a human right.

Could Self-Defense Be Legal in Brooklyn?

It almost seems impossible to believe. NYC subway rider who shot 'aggressive' straphanger during rush-hour commute won't be charged: prosecutors

The Brooklyn straphanger who shot a berserk rider attacking him on a rush-hour train Thursday will not be charged, prosecutors said Friday.

“Yesterday’s shooting inside a crowded subway car was shocking and deeply upsetting,’’ Oren Yaniv, a spokesman for the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office, said in an e-mailed statement.

“The investigation into this tragic incident is ongoing but, at this stage, evidence of self-defense precludes us from filing any criminal charges against the shooter.”

Translation: We really hate self-defense, and we want to charge this guy, but we can't. They will keep trying to do something, however.

So they are following the law, which puts them miles ahead of the DA's office in Manhattan.
