Howard Kaloogian used his barn to host weddings, and parties, and the town had no problem with that. But then he decided that he was going to host church services, and the town went ballistic.

But when Weare's zoning officer, Tony Sawyer, found out that Kaloogian was hosting church services, he personally "showed up at Kaloogian’s front door and told him he could no longer use any part of his home, including the barn, for religious assemblies. The barn was zoned residential—assemblies constitute a 'change in use,' and Kaloogian would be required to complete a site plan application and seek a conditional use permit (which Sawyer said would most likely be denied)."

Eventually after years of back and forth with the city, First Liberty Institute filed a lawsuit.

The city tried a delaying tactic, saying that the issues were not ready to be heard in court, but now the Trump administration is involved and saying that no delays should be given.

I know it's just one little church in New Hampshire, but it's a perfect example of what goes on across this country every day. It's rare and certainly not something I've felt much in my lifetime, but each day, it feels more and more like Donald Trump and his team are on the side of the American people. That's exactly what I voted for.

The authoritarians don't like the 1st amendment, or the 2nd amendment. The 4th has been gutted. Is there any amendment that they do like?

Let's be crystal clear about this. After that date Microsoft will no longer provide security updates, bug fixes, or even tech support for Windows 10. It won't suddenly stop working, but the ice under your feet will start to crack and eventually something's going to fall through

There are plenty of examples of roadkill, of major corporations who ignored this kind of thing the past, and lost 100s of millions of dollars. Don't be roadkill.

So what is a person to do? The video does actually mention Linux.

Here's the truth; today Linux, in 2025, is not your father's command line dungeon. Distributions like Ubuntu, Mint, and Zoran are designed with former Windows users in mind. They come with full GUI environments, office apps of some kind, app stores, and they don't suffer from forced updates, or telemetry out the wazoo.

It's not for everybody especially if you rely on software like Adobe products, or proprietary engineering, or editing tools, or something like that, but for a lot of day-to-day users - browsing, email, light productivity - it's more than enough.

You don't, you really don't want to keep banking information, or financial data, on a system that is not getting some kind of security updates.

They tried to break into a car, and into a home, but they apparently didn't count on meeting an armed homeowner. Suspects charged after Whitfield County homeowner fires shots during attempted break-ins

A homeowner shot at people he caught trying to break into his car and home on Saturday.

Now, the Whitfield County Sheriff's Office says those suspects face charges.

Whitfield County, Georgia is about a 30 mile drive southeast of Chattanooga, Tennessee, or about a 90 mile drive north of Atlanta.

The homeowner didn't just "shoot at" the suspects, but actually shot one of them, a woman.

Police arrested Tristan Knight for breaking into the vehicle, a felony charge.

The Whitfield County Sheriff's Office says charges are pending for the female suspect, whose identity was not released while she undergoes medical treatment.

Self-defense is a human-right, and Georgia respects it as a legal right.

Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Versus Physics - Part 2

Can you guess which is going to win? It turns out that charging really large batteries is a problem. It also turns out that politicians and environmental activists, and probably corporate executives, know little or nothing about physics and engineering.

We have a story from MGUY Australia on the reality of charging batteries. An all electric ferry was planned between Gothenburg, Sweden and Frederikshavn, Denmark. The length of that passage is about 100 kilometers. First is an article from 2021 when the plans were announced. Stena Line signs deal to launch two battery-powered ferries by 2030

Said to be the world’s first fossil fuel-free RoPax vessels of their size, these ferries will be able to accommodate between 1,000 and 1,500 passengers.

They will have a battery capacity of 60-70 MWh and require a high voltage shore power cable of around 30-40 MW.

RoPax stands for Roll-on, Passenger ferry. This would be a ship that can handle both cars, and people without their cars.

Finding a spare 30 to 40 Megawatts of power is not easy, and it's not only the excess capacity. Electricity generation at that level is not like turning on a light switch. That is 30 MW of transient load. That is the kind of load that can bring down a power grid. You would basically need a separate power plant, which you would spin up, charge the battery, and then shut down.

When they decided to shut the project down, they didn't bother to translate the "bad news" into English, but Google translate can help with that. Stena Line stoppar elfärjeplaner – tar för lång tid att få elnät - OR - Stena Line stops electric ferry plans – takes too long to get electricity grid.

The world's first fossil-free ferry lines were supposed to be in place by 2030, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Stena Line's planned investment of approximately SEK 3 billion in two new electric ferries between Gothenburg and Fredrikshavn has been halted until further notice, reports Dagens industri.

"The most important reason is that unfortunately it is expected to take too long to get access to an electricity grid connection to be able to charge fully electric ships quickly enough," says Johan Live, press manager at Stena Line to Di.

They go on to try and put lipstick on that pig, but in the end they will be running the ferry between those two cities on diesel engines. But don't worry, they will be capable of running on biofuel and e-methanol. (Pay no attention to the environmental devastation caused by palm oil plantations in Indonesia!)

What happens when you try to scale up an EV passenger car battery to be able to power a commercial vehicle. Nothing good. UK commercial vehicle electrification stalled by grid connection delays: SMMT

When politicians make pronouncements, and laws, about technology and infrastructure with no knowledge of physics or engineering, things are bound to go wrong. You can't change the physics of how batteries charge, you can't change the physics around power generation and distribution, and you can't solve intractable engineering problems by passing a law.

The UK has stated that no fossil-fuel powered commercial vehicles will be sold after a given date. Two dates were given, depending on the size of the vehicle. The problem is that you can't plug them in and charge them in a reasonable time.

The main issue, however, is securing grid connections, with some operators facing delays of up to 15 years.

This delay is seen as too long to meet the 2035 and 2040 deadlines for ZEV-only vehicle sales.

And given that all the operators are going to want to plug those vehicles in at the end of the day, engineering a grid that can handle that kind of load is going to be an "interesting challenge."

I love it when politicians pretend they are engineers, well, not when I'm impacted by the insanity that follows. But it is interesting to watch from a suitable distance.

The Dark Side of the Moon Returns to the UK Charts

Not too bad for an album that came out in 1973. We get the news from Forbes. Pink Floyd’s Multiple Masterpieces Return During A Quieter Week.

When it comes to Pink Floyd’s catalog and its latest comebacks, The Dark Side of the Moon is the standout. The full-length appears on four U.K. rosters this frame, returning to half of them after falling off amid the Record Store Day chaos.

The classic effort reenters both the Official Albums Sales and Official Physical Albums charts, landing at No. 70 and No. 75, respectively. At the same time, The Dark Side of the Moon climbs on the Official Rock & Metal Albums chart, vaulting from No. 19 to No. 10, finding its way back inside the top 10.

It isn't alone. Wish You Were Here, from 1975, hit #23 on the Official Rock & Metal Albums chart. The Wall, from 1979, hit #38 on that same chart.

When I am suffering from insomnia, which I have been, I sometimes visit the "Reaction Video" section of YouTube, in which kids today listen to music from my youth, and are often shocked to discover what it is. There has been an upswing in videos on The Dark Side of the Moon and other Pink Floyd offerings lately. I wonder if these two things are related.

It isn't just the UK charts. In February it hit #16 on the Billboard's Top Album Sales chart in the US.

Here is "Any Colour You Like" by Pink Floyd from their 1973 album The Dark Side of the Moon, though this is the 2023 remastered version.

Of course Pink Floyd selling their catalog to Sony for $400 million last year might have something to do with it.

Another Federal Law Enforcement Screw Up

I get tired of reading articles about idiot cops and idiot federal agents doing idiotic things. At least no one got shot.

So ICE decided that they needed to raid a house in Oklahoma. Why? Because the people who used to live there were suspected of bad things. The key phase in that sentence is "used to." Past Tense.

“ICE was carrying out a court-authorized search warrant for a large-scale human smuggling investigation. The search warrants included the location of an address where U.S. citizens recently moved. The previous residents were the intended targets,” a representative for Homeland Security told Nexstar’s KFOR.

What do you mean they moved? Bad guys don't move to avoid the police. They stay in one place to make the jobs easier, and reduce the paperwork, for the idiots with the guns. Or so says federal law enforcement.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE, also responded to KFOR’s requests for additional information this week, confirming the raid on Marisa’s house was part of that nationwide operation. They also admitted for the first time that Marisa and her family were not supposed to be targeted.

So, they did learn to read a map. Usually when I write about these kinds of things, it is because the agents raided the house across the street, or some other idiocy. But they couldn't be bothered to do any survellience to see if the people moved, because in their tiny minds, bad guys never move.

“Yesterday morning, I argued a case in the U.S. Supreme Court on behalf of a family from Atlanta who were the victims of a wrong house raid committed by the FBI, who simply failed to check the address on the house before they sent in a SWAT team,” said Jaicomo.

“Based on the facts as I understand them right now, there’s no question that there was a lack of due diligence,” said Jaicomo.

Police, and federal police like ICE, have a tremendous amount of power. They need to be held accountable when they screw up.

That Atlanta case, which was argued by Patrick Jaicomo, revolves around the fact that the FBI did 10s of thousands of dollars of damages to a family's home, and walked away. They were 3 doors down and across the street from the house listed on the warrant. Even though the address was on a lighted sign in the front yard, the agents - that was the FBI (Funded But Incompetent) - couldn't be stopped from opening up with multiple flash-bang grenades, and a battering ram.

At some point we are going to have to put an end to all of these SWAT raids in the name of the War on (Some) Drugs. I'm not sure why ICE thought they needed a middle of the night raid for a human trafficking case. Were they worried that the bad guys would flush people down the toilet?

If You Break Into Homes, You Will Eventually Find an Armed Homeowner

Professional Journalists keep calling adults of legal age, teenagers. This is probably not, strictly speaking, a lie in this instance, but it is a bit misleading.

Three legal, adult males, aged 18, 19, and 20, decided that they were going to break into an occupied house. Things didn't go the way they planned.

When officers arrived, they learned during the initial investigation that Christopher Terry, 19, had been shot during a home invasion.

Officials say Terry was one of three suspects in the home invasion and was shot by the homeowner, who was defending himself.

Dyersburg, Tennessee is about a 75 mile drive northeast of Memphis.

Christopher Terry died from his wounds. The other two were arrested. Jeremiah Terry, 18, and Raymon V. Patton, 20, face several charges including attempted second-degree murder. I guess that felony murder is not an option in Tennessee.

Self-defense is a human right, and while the investigation will be going on for a while, Tennessee is not New Jersey.

Again from Tom Knighton at Townhall: Buffalo Public Schools Has Its Own Long History With Scandal

First Mr. Knighton takes on the media.

When Buffalo Police SVU Detective Richard Hy unveiled allegations of the Buffalo Public Schools stonewalling law enforcement and covering up allegations of abuse, the media went on the attack. That's to be expected.

However, they went after Hy, not the Buffalo schools. They talked about his supposedly rocky past, though none of the allegations against him had anything to do with his credibility. They were attacking the messenger.

You don't hate the media enough.

Then Mr. Knighton goes on to cover some incidents in the schools. Disturbing incidents, that in at least one case the school district apparently went out of its way to cover up.

Those who watched the last "Unsubscribe Podcast" may remember that Nic, AKA The Fat Electrician, had a binder full of allegations, including at least a couple of these that he mentioned. That led me down this particular rabbit hole, and I'm glad it did, because what I'm seeing here is absolutely insane.

This is a school system with what looks to me as a long history of doing exactly what Det. Richard Hy claims they're doing now. While a history of an action isn't a slam dunk, it's sure as heck an indication that they're not as clean as they want people to think, especially when you consider that at least some of this isn't even about things that happened on campus.

Read the whole thing, but prepare to be really mad at the school. For example:

The Buffalo School System and Media Fail Kids

And they fail to protect kids. In the case of the schools, it seems they are trying to keep the district out of the news at all costs. In the case of the media they are trying to undermine the credibility of the source, apparently because he didn't go to the "legitimate media" first. Say that again. The media is helping to cover up assaults on children out of jealousy. Or so it seems to me.

Tom Knighton has taken up the charge that Detective Rich Hy (Angry Cops) of the Buffalo PD, started, about the evil that exists in the Buffalo Public School System. Here is the trigger warning that Mr. Knighton provided one article.

Before we get started on the media insanity, I just want to note that the Buffalo Public School system is going to investigate themselves to be sure they did nothing wrong. Any bets on whether or not they will discover anything? I would bet 50-to-1 odds that they will investigate and discover that they are perfect, with absolutely no liability for civil suits on this issue.

We will start with Knighton's treatment of the Buffalo media. The Buffalo Media Is As Evil As the School System

The local news media in Buffalo didn't fall all over themselves to pick up this thread and do some investigative reporting. Local NBC affiliate, WGRZ went straight to defending the school district, without even bothering to say what they were defending the district from. The local CBS affiliate, WIVB, went straight for a character assassination on Detective Hy. Why? Because they are clearly in the pocket of the school board and the city, and are probably miffed at the fact that Hy went on a podcast, where he could have an hour to speak his mind, rather than go on a local news outlet for 4 minutes, and then get preempted by the local traffic report.

To be fair, not every media outlet covered itself in crap instead of glory. Newsbusters noted one that seemed interested in actually covering the story

That would be WBEN.

As for the media as whole in Buffalo...

Yet, as Hy told me, this is a systemic issue in Buffalo. The media should be chomping at the bit to make something of this story. They should be tripping over themselves looking into the allegations and seeing what they can find. Instead, they're mostly carrying water for a school system that is credibly accused of covering up sexual assaults against students by an SVU detective in their own police department.

Next we have What the Buffalo School System Is Doing Is Downright EVIL

Over the weekend, Buffalo SVU Detective Rich Hy, known on social media as Angry Cops, was featured on a special episode of the Unsubscribe Podcast. There, he unveiled significant problems with the schools there. In particular, how they're explicitly and actively working to protect people who hurt children, at least that's how I see what he unveiled.

This is a case Hy mentioned in the first Unsubscribe Podcast video.

Hy recounting a child who told a school counselor that she was being beaten by her father. The counselor didn't believe her, apparently claiming the girl had a history of lying – which can be a symptom of child abuse, for the record – and so he ignored it. Then, the child showed the counselor a video of her being beaten on her phone. He then asked her about it later, and the child confirmed that it was her on the video, and it was of her father beating her.

Again, the counselor ignored it.

It took a third incident where the student was visibly suffering from a beating for the incidents to be reported to the police.

Lastly we have the following: Buffalo School Story Not Getting Any Better

Hy's discussed a few cases, but I was curious how common this was. While he didn't have any hard numbers, he said he's had two cases of schools covering up abuse that he termed as "egregious" in the last six months. With 12 special victims unit detectives working for the Buffalo Police Department, if that is the norm, you're looking at 24 egregious cases in that time period or nearly 50 per year. As this seems to cover at least two years, we're looking at somewhere around 100 egregious cases.

Then Mr. Knighton reminds us that all of the victims are minors under the age of 18. In at least one cover up, the administrators are refusing to talk to the prosecutors in the DA's office

As it stands, we're looking at possibly hundreds of cases of sexual assault being covered up by the schools, most likely student-on-student assaults, but parent-on-student cases also being hidden. All of these are incidents that schools are required to report under mandatory reporting laws, only Buffalo schools aren't doing it.

All this in one school district, determined to avoid bad press. Or something. How widespread is this?

Update on the Buffalo School District

Bad things are happening to kids in the Buffalo public schools, and the School System seems to be (allegedly) determined to sweep most of it under the rug. The guys at Unsubscribe Podcast are determined to see to it, that does not happen.

Unfortunately, both the schools and the media seem more interested in trying to go after Hy than actually doing some digging.

As Tom Knighton mentions in his article, the level of weaponized autism being brought to bear on this issue is amazing.

Word to the wise: Never anger four high-profile folks with significant social media savvy and rabid fan bases.

As every system/bureaucracy seeks to protect its own, the school district, with help from the local media, has been going after Detective Hy. They didn't quite realize that was like kicking a hornets' nest.

We had to go back to the early 60s to find an April homicide tally in this very tiny, rarely visited ballpark.

The 2025 totals were 20 killed, and 117 shot and wounded. That compares to the 2024 numbers of 40 killed, and 194 shot and wounded. The 2024 tally was actually less than average for April.

Felony Murder in Florida

This is about a self-defense shooting that took place in the middle of April.

The backstory: On April 16, SPPD said two men entered a home in the 3400 block of 40th St. N around 2 a.m.

Police said the homeowner fired shots, hitting a man later identified as Marcel James Williams, 20, who died at the hospital. The second suspect took off.

Ja'quavius Daniels turned himself in on Thursday.

Daniels faces a felony murder charge.

Though I suppose he is aiming for some kind of deal.

Felony murder goes by different names in different jurisdictions, but that is what it is called in Florida. It is a doctrine that holds if a person is killed as a direct result of someone committing a crime, then that person is responsible for that death. In Florida, breaking into homes is quite likely to result in an armed homeowner shooting someone. That is the case here.

The story at that time was that this homeowner was specifically targeted, though I never saw anything that said why that was the case.
