The man, identified by family as Derrick Perry, is seen in the video pointing a firearm at the suspect in the store’s parking lot in Traverse City as he and other bystanders shout "drop the knife!" Perry is a Marine veteran, the New York Post reported, citing his family.

The man who helped put an end to a mass stabbing inside a Walmart in Traverse City, Michigan.
He held the attacker at gunpoint until police arrived.

A man accused of stabbing 11 people at a Grand Traverse County Walmart last summer has been found not guilty by reason of insanity, according to the Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Office.

Traverse City, Michigan, is in the northwest portion of the lower peninsula, on Grand Traverse Bay of Lake Michigan. It is about a 255 mile drive northwest of Detroit.
Since the case is now, apparently, closed, CCTV and bodycam footage has been released.

The problem with such situations is any non badgemonkey holding someone at gunpoint stands a VERY good chance of being shot by the first mouth breathing cops who show up. Cops these days have a bad tendency to shoot first, fast and a lot....BEFORE trying to actually assess a situation.
ReplyDeleteIt multiplies Derrick Perry's heroism, that he not only risked his life to stop the bad guy, he had to know it's not over until the cops show up and accept him. He risked his life twice.
ReplyDeleteNot guilty by insanity is not new. It was invented in 1860 to let Congresscritter Dan Sickles walk after he killed his wife's lover, the son of Francis Scott Key. He went on to command a Corps in the Union Army where he disobeyed orders and nearly lost the Civil War on Day 2 at Gettysburg.
