If a grid-scale battery storage facility catches fire, and dumps a lot of toxic chemicals into the air and ground (via the water used to fight the fire) is it still a "clean energy" facility? The burned remains of the Moss Landing Power Plant battery energy storage facility caught fire again Friday morning, prompting Monterey County officials to issue a shelter in place order — less than two years after it became one of the largest battery storage facility fires in history.
Workers for Vistra, the plant’s Texas-based operator, noticed a flare-up early Friday morning against the wall of a building that burned in the initial January 2025 fire.
Moss Landing, California, is on Monterey Bay of the Pacific Ocean. It is about 15 miles north-northeast of Monterey, about 15 miles south-southeast of Santa Cruz, or about a 55 mile drive south of San Jose.

The facility at Moss Landing, was retrofitted to be a battery storage facility. The fire weakend the structure, brought debris down on the batteries, and in general made stuff hard to deal with. (Toxic chemicals, and all.) The batteries are still charged because that is what lithium-ion batteries do best. Stay charged.
