The Day The Music Died

A lot of people have heard the Don McLean song, "American Pie," from 1971, but I'm always amazed by the fact that they don't know what he's talking about.

On 3 February 1959 Richie Valens, J. P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson, and Buddy Holly died in a plane crash, together with pilot Roger Peterson. They were leaving Clear Lake, Iowa, after playing a gig, on their way to Moorhead, Minnesota. The conditions on the tour busses were horrible, so Holly chartered a plane. Shortly after takeoff Peterson lost control of the plane and crashed killing all 4 on board.

This is "American Pie" by Don McLean. It was the title song to his 1971 album.
