The media keeps emphasizing the age of the guy who got shot, but if it was self-defense, that should not be an issue. It probably shouldn't be an issue anyway, but there you have it. Man claims self-defense after teen killed in New Year's Eve shooting in Tamarac: BSO
A youth was shot in Tamarac, Florida on New Year's Eve. The shooter stayed on the scene, spoke to detectives, and was released.
The teen, identified as 16-year-old Orlando Wedderburn, was taken to a local hospital with what officials initially said were potentially life-threatening injuries.
He later died from his injuries.
I read two news stories, this one, and one from the Miami Herald. Both emphasize Wedderburn's age. If this is self-defense, and the police didn't arrest anyone, though they have been known to in Broward County, then it is likely alleged that Wedderburn was doing something to paint himself as a reasonable threat of death or grave bodily injury. In other words, he will have been alleged to have been up to no good. So what does his age have to do with that?
Aside from the media wanting to say something about the horrible gun owner who defended himself from an attack of some kind. Even in Florida, you can't just shoot people for no reason, and it isn't self-defense because the shooter says so.
Tamarac, Florida is about a 15 mile drive northwest of Ft. Lauderdale. The Everglades Wildlife Management area is immediately to the west of the city.
Officials said the shooting remains under investigation, and the case will be presented to the Broward State Attorney's Office to determine whether criminal charges will be filed.
After my last post about self-defense in Broward County, a commenter pointed out that it is perhaps the Bluest county in the state of Florida. With luck, there will be another story when the DA makes his decision.
