Meeting Strangers from the Internet is Not Safe

At least he was prepared for things to go bad. Coroner identifies armed robbery suspect killed in D’Iberville shooting

The initial investigation indicates the shooting stemmed from an arranged meeting to purchase electronic items. Investigators say the victim, who repairs and resells computers and electronic devices, believed he was meeting to buy an iPad near a Papa John’s location.

But they weren't going to sell him an iPad. They planned to rob him. When one of them drew a gun, the shooter drew his own pistol and shot the guy. The guy who got shot was taken to a local hospital, but he died of his wounds.

Ahmad Rasheed Hawthorne drove away from the encounter - don't say he ran like a rabbit - but police caught up with him, and he was arrested. He is charged with being an accessory before the fact to armed robbery.

D’Iberville, Mississippi is 3 miles north of Biloxi, across The Back Bay of Biloxi. That puts it about halfway between Mobile, Alabama and New Orleans, Louisiana.

Self-defense is a human right, and it seems to be your legal right in Mississippi.

  1. I wonder why they didn't charge the surviving criminal with Felony Murder...maybe not a thing in Mississippi?

Kudos to the Sun Herald journalists who got the roles right when reporting the story. They called the person shot "the suspect" and the shooter "the victim". They often get that wrong in self defense stories.

  2. I always meet at our local police station when selling or buying anything from an unknown person. But lately I have gotten away from purchasing or selling like that, due to the danger conditions in every city, even mine.
