This isn't really appropriate for a Monday afternoon slot in Metal for Mondays, but since I make the rules... And Tarja is one of my favorite Heavy Metal singers.
I scheduled this for today early in the holiday season, because I'm fairly sure the Christmas Spirit will be beaten out of me long before the end of December gets here. Commercialism sucks. I hope the rest of you have luck keep the spirit of the holiday going.
This song is "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" by Tarja from her 2017 album From Spirits and Ghosts (Score for a Dark Christmas).
I wanted to like her, but there was no real power behind her voice. "O Come" is one of those songs, like "Oh Holy Night" that has great power in the actual words, and she just doesn't deliver.
ReplyDeleteNot a very dynamic range to her voice. And whomever the producer is did a poor job of highlighting her voice. To me she sounded like she was in the far end of the hall and being recorded from the front of the hall.
I sampled the rest of her Christmas music and it was okay. Just okay.
I prefer Leah.
"Not a very dynamic range"? She has a three-octave vocal range. She has one the greatest voices in any musical genre. I guess YMMV; to each his own.
DeleteI was going to say something when I published the comment, but as you said, everyone is entitled to their opinion.
DeleteShe wasn't going for a typical Christmas album when she recorded this, She also wasn't going for a typical Metal Christmas. Those mostly don't work, though there are a handful of songs that don't suck.
