There has been much "coverage" of this incident, but most people are not professional pilots. Juan Browne is; he flies commercial airliners for a living.
The left engine detached from the wing during takeoff, apparently after reaching velocity V1, which means the crew was committed to takeoff. The resulting fire from the left wing was causing the right engine to stall. You cannot fly with the loss of 2 engines. (That type of aircraft has 3.)

Juan Browne also touches on the 1979 crash of a similar (not the same) aircraft in Chicago, when an engine detached from an American airlines DC10, causing an awful loss of life.
