Is it worth getting shot? Wichita man, teen hurt in shooting during car break-in | Wichita Eagle
“Investigators learned the 30-year-old homeowner went outside after seeing the 15-year-old rummaging through his vehicle,” police said in a news release. “The 15-year-old then fired a weapon, striking the homeowner. The homeowner returned fire, hitting the 15-year-old.”
No one died. Both the homeowner and the 15-year-old burglar are in critical condition, but things could have gone differently.
I get the incentive to confront them. But what would you put your family through if you died, over whatever is in your car? Maybe you should make an effort to park in the garage.
Self-defense is a human right, but being armed in your own defense is not a guarantee that nothing bad will happen.

El gato malo explains why:

I'm not saying anything like what is described in that article. I'm just asking you to consider that if you go outside to "confront the bad guys" you may not come back inside. Whether you do or not is up to you, but too many people go to "talk sternly to them" and end up in the hospital.

DeleteAgreed, there are no guarantees.
ReplyDeleteBut doing nothing because there is no third party guarantor is weakness. We all must decide where we draw our lines and which version of ourselves we can look at in the mirror and be happy with.

Not everyone has a garage. I do, but it's a "two motorcycle garage". Technically you could fit a car in there, but you wouldn't be able to open the doors. I suppose a hatchback would be possible.
ReplyDeleteI live in a neighborhood that catching someone breaking into my car isn't really a worry. Not to say it can't happen. It can and it does, but not often enough that I lose sleep over it.
So...if I did happen to catch someone doing it, I'd assume it's a kid and is likely harmless and would most definitely go out to yell at them. I'd be armed just in case and would return fire if necessary, but I'm thinking the risk is pretty negligible.
Everything is a risk/reward calculation. Just getting out of bed in the morning entails risks (especially at my age).
If you evaluate every risk as if the worst possible outcome is likely 100 percent of the time, you'll never do anything more adventurous that cower under the covers.
Hey, is that Peanut Buster Parfait worth dying for? You've got a heck of a light higher statistical probability of dying in a car crash than you do getting of shot (assuming you're not a criminal or gang banger)...better just stay at home.
Everybody be safe out there. Or live your life. Your choice.
