Going to California

I suppose it is fair to say that I tripped over this song by way of social media. It does have some redeeming qualities if you can avoid the insanity. And then I tripped over it again recently by way of YouTube, so I include it here.

I was never a fan of Led Zeppelin. My sister was, and I heard a handful of songs too many times growing up. There are a few iconic songs, like "Stairway to Heaven" that I like, and few like "Whole Lotta Love" that I hate. Today's song is one I've heard before, but I had not heard in long time before it turned up on social media.

This is "Going to California" by Led Zeppelin from the album Led Zeppelin IV from 1971. This is from the 2014 remaster, when the album was reissued as a deluxe edition.

I finally figured out why the category of reaction videos is so enthralling on YouTube. Watching someone have the joy of hearing a song or an album for the first time.

In the case of today's song, it comes by way of Isaac Brown. I want to reach through the intertubes and slap him, because he is a music producer, and his knowledge of music - granted music from the 1960s and 1970s - is wanting. Still, it is interesting to see his reaction to hearing things like Dark Side of the Moon or "Bohemian Rhapsody" for the first time. And he is trying to branch out.

One thing that drives me crazy is the nearly universal attitude of, "The greatest music in history was the 200 songs that were popular when I was in high school." Boomers and Gen X are particularly annoying, because I know most of that music, and a lot of it sucks.

  1. Reaction videos are actually a way around copyright laws. You get a bit of reaction from the poster but mostly you get the original performance, albeit with a few brief interruptions.
