Homeowner Versus Black Bear

Threats come in various shapes. Homeowner forced to take drastic action after waking up to unlikely intruder in kitchen: 'Immediate danger'

In New Mexico, a man was sleeping when he awoke to an intruder in his home. But it wasn't human. A black bear had found its way into his home near Hermits Peak, where it was destroying his kitchen in search of food. KOAT reported that the man got his rifle and shot the animal after it had broken a window and torn up a cabinet.

If you click thru there is a photo of the window, though not of the cabinet. There is also some discussion about safety around bears. The Game and Fish spokesman thought he needed to say that they don't charge people for defending themselves. My guess is that it was in answer to a question from a professional journalist.

There are also some facts about conservation from various parts of the world.

Self-defense is a human right.

  1. I love how they had to turn the story into some BS about "Global Warming".

I have to wonder if the homeowner had a habit of feeding the bears, or leaving edible things out where they could get to them...and didn't this time.

May not have even been him. Someone else may have been feeding the bear to the point that it started associated human homes with food.

Black bears generally avoid people. I see them on my trail cam at the spring on my property in the mountains almost every day, but I've never seen them in person while I've been out there. I see the deer. I see the rabbits. I see the raccoons. I see the opossums, I've even seen the bobcat that lives out there in person, but I've never seen the bears other than on camera.

Something caused that bear to associate human habitation with food...and it didn't have anything to do with "Global Warming".
