The treatment of German POWs turned fanatical party members into missionaries for democratic reconstruction.
Between 1945 and 1946 the US repatriated 371,683 German POWs who had seen America from the inside. The econmic rise of Germany in the 1950s was, in large part, due to what they learned in America. NATO, and in particular the alliance of post-war Germany and the United States would be built on that vision of a democratic Germany that was formed when they saw a democratic America.
