Yes, Marvel is all about superheroes, but they are the founding member of the Girlbosses Everywhere Club. And it has spilled over into other genres. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga flopped. The current iteration of the mess is From the World of John Wick: Ballerina, and it is in the process of flopping. Red Sonja, cannot find distribution, because Hollywood has finally caught on to the curse of girlbosses that Disney Marvel has unleashed. Though to be fair, the film is scheduled for release (after spending a couple of years on the shelf) at the end of the year.
Now, Red Sonja is an OG comic character; she first appeared in Marvel Comics in 1973. 20 years ago, a properly done Red Sonja movie probably would have succeeded. I have doubts about whether it would be properly done.
There have been great female focused action movies and TV shows in the past. Terminator 2: Judgment Day and Aliens are often mentioned. DC's Wonder Woman, both the original Gal Gadot movie, and the Linda Carter series from many years ago, were quite popular. La Femme Nikita, as a French movie, the remade English version (Point of No Return), and the Canadian TV series from 1990s, with the original name were all quite good. I haven't seen the 2010 remake of the 1997 TV series. Xena: Warrior Princess, Buffy the Vampire Slayer (TV show, not the movie), and were also quite popular. Underworld, Resident Evil, Kill Bill, and The Hunger Games are all classics. And the Milla Jovovich vampire movie, Ultraviolet, didn't flop because she was the star, it died at the box office because the writing was truly awful.
This is the Midnight's Edge video Marvel and Kevin Feige have KILLED Female Centric Action Movies for a Decade to Come!
For many years the whole comic book movie genre was boosted by the MCU, but that was back when there were checks and balances, and quality control in the guise of Ike Purlmutter's Marvel Creative Committee, whose unsung contributions and quality control ensured that every single MCU movie was a crowd-pleaser. But once Kevin Feige conspired with Bob Iger to oust Purlmutter, and remove any semblance of checks or balances, that's when the MCU went down the drain.
It is a long video at nearly 19 minutes, which is why it is on a Sunday afternoon.
Critical Drinker also has a similar take on the issue. Female Action Movies Are Dead - Girlboss Fatigue Killed Them at just 7 minutes.
