I thought society learned this lesson, but I guess not everyone got the memo. Gary crash: 3 men, 2 women in their 20s killed after South Shore train hits SUV at Highway 20, Utah Street in Indiana, police say - ABC7 Chicago
The South Shore Line is a commuter train that runs south out of Chicago, through Gary, Indiana as far east as South Bend. The fact that it is a commuter/passenger line means that the trains are traveling fast.
A witness told police the crossing gate was down, and the driver went around it to beat the train.
Yeah. You aren't going to beat a commuter train. You probably won't beat a freight train. So you can either wait 10 minutes, or spend the rest of your life dead.
Family members say three of the five victims were siblings, and they were headed back home when police said the vehicle went past active crossing gates while a train was coming.
I'm not aware of what things are like in Gary, but in the area of Illinois, roughly around Chicago, there is almost always (not always) a non-grade crossing somewhere nearby. In Chicago they are called viaducts, basically tunnels under the tracks. Those become rare as you get outside the city.
So now, because they were in a hurry, they are dead, and a family is planning for three funerals. Does this make sense to anyone?
