Driver jailed for life over murder of e-bike rider in Birmingham | The Guardian
This wasn't an accident. Abdirahman Ibrahim, who was driving a car, chased Liam Jones, who was driving an electric scooter, and killed him using the car as a weapon.
Birmingham is in the West Midlands. It is roughly a 125 mile drive northwest of London.
Jones, 22, was “showboating” with a friend, Tayzhon Johnson, when Ibrahim chased them unprovoked and knocked the victim off his bike and into a concrete post, the court heard.
So much for the UK's knife control stopping senseless crime. I suppose now they will eliminate cars. Then lead pipes, and rocks will be targeted.
Judge Smith KC told the defendant he had used the car as a “weapon” and pursued Jones and Johnson “in a determined and deliberate way”.
“You became aware of Liam Jones and Tayzhon Johnson as you entered the Coventry Road and you changed your direction to follow them.”
He was sentenced to "life" in prison. In the UK, that is definitely not like life in the US, but he will spend a fair amount of time behind bars.
Ibrahim’s brother, Abdullahi Ibrahim, pleaded guilty to assisting an offender and was jailed for two years and 10 months, for efforts to hide the vehicle in the hours after the murder.
It still doesn't add up to justice, but it is the best you can hope for in the place where Great Britain used to be. (And yes, the photo above is the statue of Justice, on top of The Old Bailey in London.)
